I see it this way- offering free art can be good, especially when building a portfolio, but asking for free art is rude at best.

I did a free illustrated poster for a cosplay convention my “friend” was hosting. They didn’t bother putting my name as a credit until I asked them multiple times. The “credit” they gave me was just a story shoutout and they didn’t even tag my account. But they posted photos of many cosplay influencers who were attending the event for free. I feel conflicted because I was the one who offered to do it for free but I really thought they would at least properly credit me. My friend has over 100k followers on multiple social medias. I feel really stupid.

Yeah... that is not right, they really should have provided credit. I'm really sorry that happened, but hopefully it doesn't happen again next time.

Thanks for recent videos, Michelle :D I subbed to you when the videos were about CalArts, then Draw with Me era, and now art careers. There was times I forget about your channel, but it's crazy to witness the evolution. I like to draw in simplistic style too. Sometimes I'm insecure and want to change it, but seeing you draw is so assuring ❤

collabs can def be a good thing, can help sometimes to actually get exposure, if everyone involve does contribute art

Thank you for this Michelle. I have been posting free and offer services... so I'm just building fanbase and doing free stuff waiting for clients and fanbase to grow. Sometimes I think that what I'm doing is for nothing. So you sharing this makes me think that what I do isn't just nothing.

Of course! Yeah, the topic of doing work for free has always been a question asked, but it's something that isn't always bad and isn't always for nothing.

I find this shocking tbh. Is doing art for the fun of it not a thing anymore? Even as professionals (or especially as professionals) I really think that not everything has to be made with money or exposure in mind.

I think you need to keep in mind that half the people are only thinking about “money” because they are actually wanting to do art as a full time job which means yes they want to be paid for their work eventually. So just make sure to remember that wanting to be paid for art does not mean they don’t love what they are doing or they are drawing just for “money”. Lots of people are in fact doing it because they find it fun and they enjoy it. But there’s a majority of people out there that along with liking to draw and having fun with it, actually wants to make it their professional main income. Although that does take lots of time to get there. Just thought to put it out there. Cause these artists who are not looking to just have it as hobby, and actually want it as a job, have bills to pay too. So I think that’s why some artists don’t look to giving anything for free per say, except for their own promotional purposes. There was that saying that is if you lower your bar it’s a lot harder to raise it later on. But of course this does not mean that you shouldn’t draw for yourself so that way you have some examples of work at least.

i heard the samething goes with the video game industry too when they are force to make video games, animation movie/show and music they don't wanna do that are force to do things they don't wanna do and also taking advantage which i'm also not ok with too that's why i change my mind in the video game industry the samething goes with animation industry this is why most say that they do there own thing be going indie this is why they say this is why indie developers that make indie games exist and also being indie animation what do indie animation movie, show or book i always prefer to do things for free just for free because i don't like i'm not a free if paying for things that's just me and the samething goes with music as well this is why most make there own music which is indie music they were small companies at first end if becoming big company i think indie's are better because i heard they get to make whatever they wanna make without anymore telling them what to do

Not sure if this is related to the video or not, but I was thinking of starting an art blog on my website! I plan to show my art process and maybe sketches of my daily life or what not. Would that help me gain traction to my website/ work? Do people look at blogs anymore? lol. I'm just trying to find an alternative to instagram in which my work gets buried.

I am always happy to ponk out free work here and there, if I spot someone I want to draw for.
Cool character I think could make for a good challenge? freeb offered! Friend whom I respect and adore? free art for your birthday!
I spot someoene who got fricked over by an A.I. Art scammer? Bam, let me help.
(yeah, people are conning clients with ai art as “real art”, and making hundreds off it, when selling ai art is illegal. I literally pointed out to a client yesterday that a reference headshot he paid 500$ for was made with A.I. He wnt to paypal to do a chargeback.)
Had an artist do a trace/steal an art? I gotchu, I’ll make you something good for free to make your day better with legit art.
Jerkwad who approaches me and goes “I can’t offer money but you should make X,Y,Z?”,
“I got a great project idea, I’ll pay you if it kicks off, but I expect yo to do A TON OF ART/CONCEPT WORK”, or
“You should draw for me, I’m super famous and I’ll pay you in exposure.”, Kick rocks.
I’m not slave labor. My freebs are conditional. :3
(also I don’t accept crypto. cause yuck.)
