- I binged watch the Halo show over the course of a couple days. It was better than I expected but still not very good. In this video, I give my thoughts on it. Something something Jimmy Rings.

U know its worse than Halo 5 when frog has to pull out his human suit to explain it to us
Oh god… Halo 5 was like 20x better than this…
@@ElZamo92 it is because Halo 5 it is still Halo at the end of the day
It’s true the Halo show wasn’t as bad as everyone made it out to be. It was actually much worse.
You had me in the first half... 💀
My dad stopped watching in the first season, he said “there’s too much master chief bum, was that in the game?” 💀
my dad gave up 3/4 of the way through season 2 and ranted about how much it sucked to me. I've never seen him care that much about a Halo property ever
master CHEEKS
What would happen if Master Chief was Master Freak and got freaky? 👅👅👅👅👅
Me and my dad finished it
It's true. I was the bum
Who are you imposter and where is our Frog
He wears a human suit because of UA-cams terms of service.
It would be a funny bit if he mocapped himself into a forg or something
You know it’s bad when even the real master chief calls this show an abomination

Unironically one of the best videos on the Halo TV-show I've yet seen and that's saying a lot considering how many I've watched.
I think a LOT of people who talk about the TV-show get the problems it has very wrong, tbh.
For example a lot of people in the videos I've watched will say stuff like "They tried to humanize the Master Chief but they shouldn't have!" But I think that's completely wrong.
I think you pointed to the actual problems with what they tried to do with the Chief. As you pointed out with your Dexter example, instead of first giving us the Chief we're used to for at least a couple of episodes, they had him be that way for like half an episode and then they immediately try to change him. It's way too fast. You need to establish a baseline first before this "humanizing" is meaningful.
On top of that, as you also pointed out, they took this humanizing in completely the wrong direction where he becomes this weird ragemonster who deserts and tries to kill Halsey. But they could've had him, again as you pointed out, struggle with all of this but master it while Kai fails to deal with it. That would've still humanized him, but not to the point of it being not Master Chief anymore. And it would've explored the idea they were going for there much better.
The one other thing I'd say about that all which you didn't point out, is that I don't think they should've gone with the "emotion chip" bullshit. They should've just had it be natural character development where Master Chief was indoctrinated to suppress his emotions, but an important event makes him start to re-examine it. Would've felt far more natural. Like to return to your Dexter example, Dexter doesn't have an emotion chip. It's his experiences which make him change his thinking about certain things.
This is all just on one topic (albeit an important one) but, yeah, I liked this video. I think it hit the nail on the head as to what the problems are far better than most other videos I've seen. Good job.
Honestly the best bits of the Halo show I saw is when people took the action scenes and then cut music from the actual games over them and edited out everything that wasn't the Spartans vs the Covenant.
That must have been a really cool 6 minute video
@@VideoGamer110 yeah it had Blow Me Away and everything.
So just cut scenes?
You want a video game
That's all you want.
@@viziontrexOr just something thats more interesting, None of the story really intrigued me so just keeping the action is the best alternative
How are they gonna make Captain Keyes black and simultaneously not include Sgt Johnson in the show lmao
Johnson is the fucking man and the fact that 343 hasn’t used him for anything is criminal. I would much rather have Johnson as an AI saying ridiculous quips in my ear than the annoying AI options in infinite.
Frog you’re stronger than me I couldn’t even stomach a hate watch of this show lmao. I’m very much a lore person and,, god,,
Not wanting to hate watch something is a rational and normal thing to do
Same reason I won't bother with the Fallout show as well.
@@franzosisch5965actually the fallout show is pretty good they get the vibe of the games really well
@@franzosisch5965the fallout show is supposed to be pretty good
I watched 10 mins and turned it off. It should have been a military operations-focused show, not whatever these side stories about civilians are.
The show looks awful, can’t believe you actually made it through 2 seasons. Thanks frog 🐸
3:00 The current piece of media being consumed expects the audience to have also experienced a different form of media to properly grasp the story? Yeah, that sounds like modern Halo storytelling to me
5:11 “Evil ruler guy who you probably remember as the scientist from…”
Me expecting frog to say he likes Pacific Rim
: (
Not even 343 would disrespect the chief like the producers of this show did. They had an example of how to do a faceless protagonist with the Mandalorian and just torpedoed the show with this stupid "make chief into a normal soldier dude" schtick
Wait till you find out 343 was in charge of a bunch of what happened lol
Kiki Wolfkill has her signature somewhere green lighting this...
@@matthewwelles8422 it's just another example of 343 being ashamed of making Halo content
having an "emotional inhibitor" is ridiculous, the spartans behave emotionally the way they do because of the kidnapping and military training from the age of 6
I feel like Walt trapped in the car shouting in vain trying to save Frog right now. FROG NO! FROG! FROOOOOOOOOOOOOOG!!!
Frog put on the human suit, this is serious business
He is not Master Chief... he is master cheeks
I’m surprised you didn’t mention that the rebels weapons didn’t work against the covenant but the instant a spartan has it, it works greatly. Spartans don’t make AKs more effective damage wise.
AKs being in the show asks a question:
Why do they have wooden furniture? This isn’t Fallout, I’m pretty sure that arms dealers have the capacity to manufacture weapons. And oil doesn’t seem like too major of a problem in the 26th century.
@@better-shotgun1686 the entire things a mess
@@Snellythedog their stupidity goes beyond not caring for the franchise they are making a show for.
The show is written by some dorks who don’t even properly understand or even played halo beyond maybe their first 2 hours, who then promptly never touched it again. It’s really shows
In that same scene, they have a plasma pistol prop that they just... didn't bother painting. Looks like a hunk of cheap wood lol. It was so embarrassing--not just that one thing, obviously--for the amount of money they spent on that season.
That's some nerdy kid in a Chiefs hat. Where is the frog?
I'm tired of these networks scooping up IP's that have big fan bases, only to then trash the show into something nothing like the original content so they can "put their own mark on it" and "appeal to bigger audiences". Can we just agree this doesn't work? They alienate the fans and aren't good enough writers to make something interesting ... if they were, they'd have made their own content instead of buying it.
The fact that you downloaded a arby n chief r34 for the graphic is is crazy 💀
That’s what I’m saying when I saw that in this for a second I was like wait a second what was that image of chief and Arby
9:11 Its the scene where Chief destroys the ring
My boss likes it. Should I quit my job?
This is a really detailed and well thought out critique of the show and from the description, I'm so glad it doesn't exist.
LETS GOO!!! Master cheeks!!!! my favorite character!!!!
So we’re all gonna ignore the fact that Spartans don’t even have emotional pellets? They’re just really well disciplined.
HE’S NOT A FROG
im so sorry you did that
When the trailer came out years ago I told everyone that this show is gonna be a Mass Effect tv show that was reskinned to Halo and I still stand by that.
Nice to hear an opinion from someone who loves Halo, but doesnt know the lore. Most people talking about it are focused on how the story and characters are so different to the games, and theyre right to complain, but theres more than just that 😂 such a shame. Maybe the Fallout show being so good might wake them up to the issues
Does anybody remember the old story that went around Van Halen and M&Ms? The helmet debate reminds me of that. The guy taking his helmet off is not THAT big a deal in itself but it's the "brown M&M" in the bowl, so to speak; it's a quick, easily identifiable sign that somebody hasn't paid close enough attention to what they were doing.
you're a stronger man than i lmao. my aunty likes it though so it seems to do well with people who know nothing about the games
The worst demographic
Not even acknowledging Keyes, and them omitting Johnson....
I think what the show should have followed was a group of Marines, ODSTs or Spartan 4s and Chief was a recurring side character who would intervene, save the main cast then leave again periodically. I think Chief as a character doesn't really work for a TV show because he's in universe, effectively just a vehicle, a plot device, something for the commander in charge to point at something and wait a week for Chief to do it somehow and actually following through with that would make for really bad TV but not following through with that would make for a really bad Halo TV show.
The show instead tries to go for something in between where they follow Chief but make it really hard to believe that's Chief because they have to nerf him to create tension when like, he's supposed to be, in the eyes of this hyper advanced alien race, a literal demon. Like in order for the UNSC to defeat a single Covenant Ship they need to deploy 100 of their own ships and even then they lose like 30 ships in the conflict, and this wimpy horndog is supposed to be a literal demon to them?
Chief being more of a "deus ex machina" actually could work pretty well, especially when it's implied in lore that the Marines get a lot of moral boost when Chief shows up
Not having the MC as the lead is a non-starter. He is the most iconic and recognizable character from Halo. I think that's been the problem with The Terminator, as they keep bringing Arnold back and cramming him in the story even though trying to explain him and justify his inclusion is detrimental to the story.
I think similarly of Ace Attorney. The trilogy is awesome. But their attempt to introduce a new protagonist in the fourth one didn't go so well and eventually Phoenix does become an attorney again in the fifth.
The Halo trilogy is awesome. The story was done. But by this point he's done so much insane stuff and faced so many extinction threats that it gets wearisome.
Bungee "got away" with having the Rookie in ODST due to "low expectations," which got undercut with Mattack deciding to elevate ODST with a marketing campaign and price of a full $60 game, so ODST gets unfairly maligned for being expansion pack/DLC at a full game pricing.
As much as I'd love to see a show about another character, or the ODSTs, or marines, I don't think it'd ever be green lit. TV executives would never give it a chance.
I can't believe frog managed to get a human to do this video with him. Frog really is the F.O.A.T (frog of all time)
Thanks for doing this. I couldn't bring myself to watch it.
Lol the Ackerman counter was perfect!
The best part of the Halo TV show is content creators making videos like this calling out how terrible this production is. This show is a straight middle finger to fans of Halo lore.
Honestly, the Halo tv show is such a letdown I don't see Halo ever getting back to its golden days like Halo 3
Unfortunately those days are long behind us. Microsoft and 343 are just fine with Halo becoming a niche IP otherwise the past 10 years of halo would have been so much better.
Definitely one of the best analyses of the ahow's shortcomings i've seen.
Love the mention of Dexter. Severely underrated show
After the first episode, I was very optimistic. The battle scene with Chief and the Covenant made me feel like I was watching the video game in live action. By episode 4, I was done with the show, and never finished it
amazing takes from a good amphibian. Thanks for watching this so I didn’t have to suffer alone.
I've tried to defend this show but man it shouldn't take 2 seasons to really get going. Season 2 was definitely an improvement and I will watch a 3rd season but the 1st season did quite a lot of damage. I like the deviation from the lore because it allows for suspense to build.
Now that I've seen the Fallout show, I wish Amazon picked up the Halo IP. I suspect that Amazon was willing to put in enough money to have great visuals. I don't mind the campy cgi too much but oh what we could have had.
I would argue this season did far more damage. They threw away all this amazing lore in favor of complete incompetence and/or personal beliefs. Now they're stuck with it and more importantly every season pushes any chance we get the Halo we already fell in love with back.
I didnt think that the halo show could get worse until frog showed his face in a review and somehow it became worse
Season 1 left me thinking "Thank god that's over" where as Season 2 left me thinking "Wait they might actually turn on the stove and start cooking"
In all seriousness I have resigned myself to watching all of the show and I want a season 3. It's bad and inaccurate to the tone/lore/character of the source material but I enjoy watching it just to see what kind of random shit they will do next. Plus I am super curious to talk to people who don't know anything about Halo and see what they think, as for the most part they liked season 2.
Congrats to Halo 5 for not being the worst Halo story anymore.
I'm gonna have to steal "Jimmy Rings and Pals" to refer to Chief and friends.
It's funny that in the actualy canon of the games, Halsey chose not to use emotional inhibitors because of the risk of the *exact* type of fail plot the TV show does. It's so completely bizarre and obvious that the people involved didn't really want to make a Halo show.
And yeah, the show DOES over-rely on you knowing existing lore. The lore it deliberately goes out of its way to shit on. It's really strange. So I'm expecting that Miranda will find a cure to the Flood and that the Halo rings will have a feature that can bring people back from the dead.
Ah, yes, my favorite character from Season 2, Ackerman
How does it make sense for the infected to go from zombie to combat form if on our introduction to the flood in halo 1 where we see an outbreak also start there wasn’t a single zombie just combat flood and the little ones
I agree. Kwan Ha not dying by the covenant is criminal.
Makee is genuinely more interesting.
I never realized that the Halsey and Miranda reveal would have been better later.
I like the idea that Kai being the more emotional one plot would have been cool to see. However, the actress did a phenomenal job regardless
9:05 great 💯 joke
I saw the first season only. Action was top notch in my opinion. It’s everything else that’s the issue. 5/10
I personally liked the show and have been playing halo since CE came out. Obviously it doesn’t stay true to the source material at all, but personally I didn’t really care about that. To me, it’s more just a show containing elements from halo, but not really directly related to it
I might give it a chance again after this video. I stopped mid season 2 because I was getting phisicaly sick every time kwan showed up on the screen.
Imagine they just followed the story from reach, start with chief whooping ass but ultimately losing rech and escaping on the autumn
Frog is it spelled Ackerman or Hackerman?
the fact that the whole point of halo originally was "humanity is on its last leg and spartans and human strategy are the only advantage we have", like even in CE you get told in the start that their ships are superior, a planet got destroyed and your ship is going down, its all about how humanity is struggling and dying, this series gives no importance to how bad it was to live this war, the covenant is just an enemy that sometimes appears and there is really just no narrative whatsoever
That human vtube avatar gets better looking with every video.
The Halo show would've benefit from the spartans being shallow 2-Dimensional killing machines, and the main drama veing the external conflict, ie. The human vs covenant war
Ah good you've seen the horrors of master cheeks
When the show focuses on the weird space people, it genuinely feels like a Bargain Bin Sequel Star Wars.
That's bad by the way.
Thats what i thought too lol
I really thought you were a frog 😢
Don't worry. Frog (toad) uses ai to generate a filter for his footage that shows what he would look like as a human.
The chief from the show is literally mister chef.
Didn't know "Act Man" was in this show, would have been cool to see him more
Nice bro has that office cubical vibe
man spartan ops then the halo show oof, you are going on a pain trip, next you are gonna tell me that you learned how to sword fly and are attempting halo 2 laso
i gave up after episode 3 when mc had his helmet off for 99% of the show so far
The nicest thing I have to say about this show is that it's an abomination and everyone involved in making it should be ashamed. I hope it gets canceled so we can all forget about it and move on.
What a colossal wasted opportunity.
I'm a Halo fan who doesn't care much about the plot so I actually enjoyed the show and saw the good instead of looking for the bad. Everyone is overexaggerating (Except the part where Chief and Makee, uhm, yeah I'm done talking. I'm one of those action enthusiasts, like transformers, even if the plot was bad there still GOATED movies because of their action
@@HolyCrossed If you don't care much for the plot then you're overlooking the majority of sources for criticism. Even if you take away the Halo visuals, the show is a poor Sci-Fi story. It speaks volumes when the most praise given is usually regarding action scenes, which still have their own goof moments.
We have (mostly) good stories and writing throughout the Halo franchise in games, books and shows. This series should've been setting benchmarks with the amount of backing and advertising it seems to have, yet it just insults the source material and falls short at almost every hurdle.
My Dad liked the show. As with everything else he watches, he refused to explain why, and I don't think he knows.
As for myself, I gave up around about the time that a bunch of civilians got killed without setting off the super-hearing or motion sensors of the Spartan super-suit. If you did that to Iron Man, you wouldn't have a series.
Ackermens lure is trying to oppose Halsey and delete spartan 2s. He played (lore wise) really well for the role, Frog
I just discovered your channel and your content is pure comedy gold dude😂😂👍🏼
It’s like what happened with game of thrones ( at least for me). Once the white walkers were shown to be real and a massive threat, it was really hard to care about the political bs when that is happening in the back ground. Maybe if the covenant were kept as a rumor for a while in season 1 with some characters contacting it but the leaders didn’t wanna believe it?
i think if they stuck close to the books of 'insurgents vs UNSC' then going to 'oh hey, yeah. Covenant. MUCH bigger threat.' it would've been a lot better for season 1.
Wow. I thought people said the CGI was good? Master Chief moves so weird, and the covenant look bad, especially the elites.
idk, i only watched the first episode and the last episode of season 2, and that made it much more enjoyable.
0:26 now I have to leave this video here for later 😁😁
Frogtastic😄
As I halo fan,I don't mind the series that didnt follow the games or lore accurately. The problem I have is the lack of understanding of what they were adapting. If they wanted to tell their story that's fine, but it's gonna keep some of the core elements cause why call it a adaptation when it's in name-only. Arcane and castlevania actually did this well.
The whole Halsey/Ackerson/Parangosky story and the ONI secrecy was a lot more interesting in the books, but yeah, they got everything wrong in this damned show.
I agree with literally every word you said.
I feel like with kwan stuff or any minor "companion" stretched a whole season even two season was a mistake like kwan and soren they did not need to be stretched like a series regular
I liked the series but it had its fair share of mistakes, I was really dissapointed that arbiter was killed of cause i was looking forward to the halo 3 ish storyline.
i wish season 1 they just retold halo ce with some creative liberties of their own. what we got just doesn’t feel like halo at all. elites dont even act like they do in the games
Now if you want to wash the taste of that horrible show off. You should watch The Fallout show even if you're not a fan of the games, it's great.
It’s great if you’re a fan of Bethesda Fallout. Not if you’re expecting respect or consistency given to the OG games and New Vegas.
Frog got to enjoy master cheeks like the rest of us
Are we not gonna mention the jackal with a plasma rifle?
Master cheeks jimmy rings
Every single person that has never played Halo said they enjoyed the show. I didnt think it was beyond excellent, but what helped me enjoy it more was seeing the show from the pespective that chief is a human being and not a super soldier. The show highlights wayyyyyy more human element than the game. 8:04 specifically. Seems to be everyones gripe 😂
I've seen quite a few people saying they liked the show and that "it's not that bad", which makes me seriously wonder what they got out of the original story in the first place.
Pretty much exactly how I felt. Cortana is core to the games and she's just a side character in the show.
Why was there a human talking to me in a frog voice?
Now hold on a darn moment! I thought you were a frog not human!!!!
"theres no way its as bad as everyone says...." You're right, people are too kind when trashing it
Im praying there won't be a Season 3
I'd be happy if they just rebooted it immediately with the same actors and just a new writing team, and maybe the showrunner from the show expanse.
More important than a new writing team would be a new executive producer - ideally someone with experience producing projects like this. Neil Blomkamp would be great for this.
@@NeonNijahn they should have got some of the people who made the halo 1-3 games to help with the script and stuff
You're a stronger man than me. I couldn't get through all that garbage.
Finally; a pretty objective opinion, but by someone who does actually know what they're talking about. Not a superfan who hates everything, and not someone who literally knew nothing before watching it, but an informed person who took the time to analyze it.
Glad that you watched it, this way I didn't have to.
i think the main issue is that the show focuses more on the drama than the action that the games are, noone plays the halo games for the drama, its not a soap opera
