He's a legendary trash talk and defensive master.
His 99-00 season is on my all time team at point guard. First team all nba, first team all defense averaging about 24, 9, and 6 rebounds while locking up the best guard on the other side. Very underrated also for being a supreme team player and leader
100 overall trash talk too, that's good for -5 overall for whoever he's guarding.

He was the best defensive guard for almost a decade while still being the team's leader, creating plays, assisting and scoring. He is the only guard to win DPOY in the NBA history ever. Let's show him all the respect we can to this great great Legend.

That's cause unfortunately the league runs off HYPE. Gp2 hasn't had as much hype as other guards who recently came out, even if he out plays them.....Hype is king

He use to torch the Grizzlies here in Vancouver and hit threes from the corner all night and talk shit to the people sitting courtside while chomping on his gum. I still remember it clearly, got to see him live several times here.

I remember seeing the Supersonics when they came to Vancouver he was 100% pure skill all the way and it was a dream come true because I always wanted to see the Sonics while living in British Columbia Canada and Payton was one of my favorite players I had his jersey too.

they certainly were - those years from 93 - 97 where they always had 55+ wins each season .... they started with the trapping defense and hit on the break with their fast long athletes ... mcmillan payton mckey askew kemp all great defensive players ... these sonics would go on east road trips and be blowing out each team in their own building by 30 points each place they played ... they OWNED the Rockets during this period too, always close games but sonics beat them 10 straight at one point, but the Rockets got 2 Championships during this time of Jordan's hiatus ....

Dude really gets slept on when talking about the great PGs.
I think while maybe some were more complete and consistent, I feel like Payton could slot in better on a loaded team than say Stockton or Zeke because of his defense and willingness to not be the primary option on a team.
Like he's without question the best defensive PG. Zeke and Stockton may have had more in the playmaking and scoring department, but they weren't like head and shoulders better (mostly more consistent). Rather have that defense and get scorers at another position.
He's a real sleeper pick if you do a fantasy draft with your buds.
None of them ever averaged more ppg than Gary , they do have more assists though and they weren't slouches on defense either both were elite . Gary should be in the discussion though

I would have loved to be at the games in the early years of Seattle vs Utah and watch "The Glove" fail at trash talking when Johnny Stock wasn't listening or pay attention. There's players you can trash talk and it will work and then there's players you just have to bring your game and play.
