I will never forget how cool that scene was; where the crew is walking the street to take on Yakumo and everyone joins in, one by one. Chills everytime.
If it gives you chills being an adult you can only imagine how I felt being a child watching this on repeat almost every day when I was a child my childhood consisted of this with cartoon network with a sprinkle of Nickelodeon
I actually would have thought more people would have known about Poltergeist Report because I distinctly remember it on the shelves at my local Blockbuster as a child. I get that if you were born after the 90s you may not even know what a Blockbuster is, but it seemed fairly visible in most places with how well the show did stateside.
Blockbuster was where I got a lot of my initial anime watching in, and of course my Mom didn't know how rough or raunchy anime got 😂 Like you said, this one was at alot of Blockbusters, and I eventually recorded my own copy of it so I didn't have to keep renting it. Looking back now, I can see the flaws, especially in the dubbing, but this show made me more a fan of this crew over the Z team. Still like Goku and company, but Yusuke and his squad always felt more like a team than the Z fighters most the time being spectators
Рік тому+13
So I've recently watched Poltergeist Report with subtitles, and I really like how the fight Kuwabara had with his enemy went. Basically outsmarted them into wasting all their energy and used that physical strength he's gotten from his fights with Yusuke to grab a win with both hands.
I saw this movie WAAAY before I saw the series. My dad would rent an anime movie once a weekend over the summer, and this was one of the movies we saw. It was one of the better ones, and I really enjoyed it. Going back to it, the nostalgia goggles are REALLY thick. I know the voice acting is crap, and I know overall everything could be tightened up, but still... I like it. I like the ideas it presented to the story overall. And if I'm being honest, I liked this portrayal of the characters (and especially the action scenes) better than the anime/manga. Like, Yusuke not being nearly godlike compared to the rest of them, and Kuwabara still being on-par with them. It's clearly not canon, but I think that works out best. Making them all feel equally meaningful was something series struggled with from start to finish. Is it good? Meh, not terribly. Does it have unique ideas? Yes, and I appreciate that. Do I like it more than it deserves? Probably. But I can admit that.
Personally I liked Hiei giving words of affirmation to Kurama. It adds flavor to their dynamic and shows even someone cool as Kurama needs a person to lean on
Yu Yu Hakusho is my favorite anime and when I was in highschool a friend gave me the VHS of the Poltergeist Report movie. It was the Japanese version with English subtitles, so it wasn't until many years later when I got the DVD of the movie that I heard the awful dub. I just got the anniversary Blu Ray set and disappointed that Eizou Hakusho and the two movies are not included. At minimum crunchy roll should have put the DVDs of the first movie and Eizou Hakusho in the set.
Animation looks sick tho. If this were adapted into a video game and fleshed out, it could fix the problems u pointed out and be really awesome. It seems interesting with potential
I honestly enjoyed the poltergeist report movie, regardless of the dub being different from the funimation cast. I enjoyed the fights, the animation, and the plot. I even liked the possible expansion of lore by introducing the Netherworld, Yakumo who ruled it, and the war between the spirit world and the Netherworld which ended with the Netherworld being destroyed and Yakumo being banished into space along with his forces. I also think Yakumo was at the A class level.
2:10 Ive obsessed over the continuity of this movie for decades, so here's the problem with what you just said: Kuwabara's spirit sword was gone at this point. From his fight with Elder Toguro all the way up until his dimension sword powerup with Seaman. Between Yusuke not being a demon yet and Hiei having his Dragon of the Darkness Flame, theres literally nowhere that this movie fits in the timeline and it pisses me off. Somehow even more than the dub. Visually it looks super cool though. Great for making edits and AMV's.
Have the same shirt, Anyhow, even though it takes a bit for you to post vids, they are extremely well put together and very informative. You can tell a lot of work is put in. Keep it up!
Oh man I remember having a box of wine and cigarettes before I was getting married in Bosnia (seriously) and was ready for the movie of my favorite anime of all time, YYH Soon as I heard the voices...the whiplash could of thrown me out a window, the quality of the movie no longer mattered, I just kept imagining how much better it'd be with the original VA's
Had to comment again and say. Thanks to this review of the movie. I have seen more of it than I could stand to sit through because of the poor English dubbing. So much appreciated for the good reviews. Keep the spirit of yu yu alive!
I'm amused that my friend convinced me to rewatch Yu Yu Hakusho last month, and now I'm getting recommended Yu Yu content. I was surprised, though, to learn that people are still putting out newer content about it. Bless you, this movie was funnier to watch because of this review.
Really people didn't know this movie existed this was my first introduction to YuYu Hakusho before I saw the series on toonami my mom's boyfriend at the time had this movie it's the sole reason the show is my favorite it's because I've been introduced to the characters since I was like four years old and it was my first introduction to actual anime
Fun fact, in the latino dub, following it's long tradition of spoiling things through titles, this movie was titled, The Invaders of Hell (Netherworld doesn't really translate well into spanish idk) I also feel bad for the english fans, yeah this movie may as well be filler, but it's pretty to look at at least, and the english dub didn't live up to the work done in the series, fortunately the latino dub did its standard great job with it.
Hiei vs Steve being a cakewalk makes sense. Even if Hiei was mind-controlled, the dark dragon would still wreck Steve because it has a mind of it's own. I think my favorite fight was Kuwabara vs the blue guy since the strategy Kuwabara used was actually smart. Pretty whatever film overall, but Yakumo's design was badass.
Bad movie? Hell no. The fact it's both entertaining and cool is enough by me at not just that the visuals are good as fuck too. I don't need much else in a shonen movie, SPECIALLY a Yu Yu Hakusho movie. What makes YYH work isn't a deep HxH ass story, it's is characters, both their personalities and how cool they are. And for that alone this movie succeeds in my book.
I could be wrong. But I remember seeing this in my video store. One of my best friends actually saw this movie before the series so I know it had some popularity with general anime fans. I’ve always assumed it just sells too well for the license holder to give it to Funimation. Like not that it’s a best seller but I think it must have been enough the original dvd rights holder didn’t wanna let go for what Funimation was offering.
The dub is insufferable but I do find this movie a lot of fun despite a lot of under-explained elements (Hinageshi’s story, Netherworld lore etc). I still cling to the faint hope that Funimation will save this one day. Ps. The netherworld demon you called Steve? His name is Raigo
I think the movie is actually pretty good. I mean it does have a lot of plot holes and stuff. But generally speaking the animation is pretty good, I like the fight sequences a lot, especially Kuwabara at the start of the movie, and heie’s dragon flame is probably the coolest they ever made it look. Everyone absorbing the energy at the end was literally the first thing I thought of when I first watched guardians of the galaxy. But I like that the subsequent attack has each fighters ability. It was horribly translated and dubbed to distraction. Aside from that, for a 90’s anime film it’s really good.
With all of the love Yu Yu hakusho has gotten im kinda hoping for a new game, or possibly a remaster of dark tournament, with it's controls reworked a bit
You're a super fan of YYH and Persona 4, and you like to talk about them on a deeper level . I feel like we would be great friends IRL because I feel like your perspectives line up closely with mine.
The 1994 movie deserves a 4K UHD at this point, it’s a hidden gem in my book. Both English and Japanese versions are awesome and it’s soundtrack is a beautiful work of art. Also, if I’m correct, for the dub voice actors, the movie came out first, then the animated series. Hence, why there completely different voices actors from the series and movie.
This couldn’t be before chapter black because the squad didn’t know she was alive until the first couple episodes of chapter black during the house of illusions section
I'm not sure if that's the case for the manga, but in the anime, Genkai shows back up after the conclusion of the Dark Tournament before they leave Hanging Neck Island, near the end of Ep. 66
The rizz from the cast in this movie doesn't get talked about enough 😁 12:43 😅 I'm commenting as I'm watching this. See?! Lol that's exactly what I meant! The crew is going through outfits like crazy lol
I ended up watching this in Japanese, I watched the show in the dub but played Jump Force for a college project so I was used to a few of their voices. Apparently dodged a bullet on the dubbed movie I guess
It’s probably not the same. The demon power is likely harder to control since demons usually don’t project it out their bodies like that. Also a spirit weapon requires some kind of focus not physical not emotional it’s more like willpower or a souls conviction. Demons don’t have souls and don’t use energy in the way that a human would because spirit energy could take almost any form. A former human would potentially have it EASY because whatever remaining spirit energy from having had a spirit would make em capable of casually busting out a spirit energy weapon and giving it a shap. Also Kuwabara doesn’t have like the highest amount of spiritual energy, but he actually has like really refined spirit energy even before his spirit sword becomes a dimension sword because he’s a descendent of psychics.
this damn movie doesn't have english subtitles on the 'very legal sites' that i use, so this video is how i'm 'watching' 'cus that english dub is abysmal lol, they refer to the Sanzu River as the 'River Styx'.. this is Buddhism, not Greek Mythology like what lmfao
The reason Netherworld team got so bad is bc banished. Low gravity in space, all their muscles atrophied, and they didn't have anyone to train against except each other.
Got this from my Blockbuster in the late 90's. Way before the show was licensed by Funimation, and debuted on Adult Swim in the early 2000's. I had no idea what Yu Yu Hakusho was, let alone that there was a series. It was a strange reversal when I saw the show later. I actually think this movie is okay largely thanks to the animation. The 90's were a very mixed bag with English dubbing for anime projects, and this one was one of the forgettable attempts.
Roast him all ya like, but I’d like to see YOU get big on UA-cam to the point where you can change outfits 5 times in the same video smh The movie had a budget and Kurama was gonna spend it smh
The only real problem with the movie was the strange dub not being able to match Kuwabara’s and Yusuke’s voice, other than that it was a solid anime movie. Didn’t have any problems you wouldn’t see in basically any other anime movie; goofy redubbing. If people find that the broken/weird English bits are enough to ruin the movie you ought to stay away from Anime movies in general.
🔥the dub is trash but the rest is pretty good wouldn’t show it to someone for their first experience tho(or anything probably) only hardcore fans should watch or at least finish the whole series first
The money I’d GIVE for the original English dub actors to act in this movie and for the localizers to fix the script. The animation is SOOOO dang pretty. 🤩 Too bad everything else about it, is pretty bad💀😭
Yeah Genkais not a real combatant anymore dude. She gave all her spunk to Urameshi now she’s ACTUALLY HER AGE a decently fit non-bulky 70ish-some old woman. Aside from being a fit human she’s not much capable of fighting now. I estimate she’d struggle with low class C rank demons.
I don't think I would've made it pass the moment "Kuwahara" was uttered
Same
I will never forget how cool that scene was; where the crew is walking the street to take on Yakumo and everyone joins in, one by one. Chills everytime.
If it gives you chills being an adult you can only imagine how I felt being a child watching this on repeat almost every day when I was a child my childhood consisted of this with cartoon network with a sprinkle of Nickelodeon
Lanipator is the only dub of the movie that exists to me.
Now the jokes make sense
This. I only know of the movie because of this.
KuwaHARA
100%
The animation is SO GOOD. Just. Oh my goodness.
I would've enjoyed the movie a lot more if it was Dubbed by Funimation.
"After a rain dance setup thunder has 100% accuracy which doesn't go well for a ghost-flying type" I lost my damn mind laughing at this joke.
Hearing “kuwahara” and KUWABARAS voice instantly makes me not like it but the animation is fire
Same here that name change to me is dumb but the animation is the bomb

Kubo really just took the plot of this movie and made it the Soul Society arc in Bleach
Togashi's work always has the weirdest movies 😂
The animation is beautiful 😍
I saw this movie WAAAY before I saw the series. My dad would rent an anime movie once a weekend over the summer, and this was one of the movies we saw. Didnt the Spirit Defense force make its first appearance during the Chapter Black arc?
Personally I liked Hiei giving words of affirmation to Kurama. It adds flavor to their dynamic and shows even someone cool as Kurama needs a person to lean on
“Ambien based performance” brah 😭 that had me crying funny stuff man
Yu Yu Hakusho is my favorite anime and when I was in highschool a friend gave me the VHS of the Poltergeist Report movie. That watch party was a riot!
Good vid, the voice acting was brutal.
Animation looks sick tho.
If this were adapted into a video game and fleshed out, it could fix the problems u pointed out and be really awesome. It seems interesting with potential
When it came to the drip Kurama didn’t come to play 😂😂
I guess there was always different studios looking at Yu Yu Hakusho. It'd be neat if the funimation cast would ever dub this movie.
I honestly enjoyed the poltergeist report movie, regardless of the dub being different from the funimation cast. I enjoyed the fights, the animation, and the plot. Eyebrows is the best name ever
I loved every aspect of this video, but holy shit the citation needed bit sent me to orbit!

Yusuke's Jacket was the real MPV of this bizarre adventure
Fun fact: in The movie about the Netherworld king, Yakumo attacking the Living World, Eric Stuart voiced Koenma.
Had to comment again and say. Thanks to this review of the movie. I have seen more of it than I could stand to sit through because of the poor English dubbing.
So much appreciated for the good reviews. Keep the spirit of yu yu alive!
This movie was the reason why i loved the anime my dad had this on tape back in the day one of my favorite anime movies
Bro love the channel

We cause so much trouble as a team 😂😂
Yu yu always had some of the best drip in shonen, kurama just wanted to make it claro

Imagine if togahsi wrote the script, would have been legendary.
Never saw the movie... kinda glad I didn't but at the same time it diiiid look well animated!
10:46 Watching the movie for us was appreciated, but this is the real sacrifice that was made.
Denim crop top aka the trunks jacket

Dude i instantly recognized the sound track from streets of rage 2. Hell yea, you get a like and a comment
Side note can we talked about how dripped out of their gord the crew is?
Tht shirt is hard......nd I like the streets of rage 2 background music as well
The movie is dope reminds me of Demon city shinjuku

I downloaded this on limewire back in the day lmao
Ngl your commentary healed my inner child who had to sat through this movie's weird pacing and voice acting.
Thank GOD it has remained untouched!!!
You're a super fan of YYH and Persona 4, and you like to talk about them on a deeper level . I feel like we would be great friends IRL because I feel like your perspectives line up closely with mine.
another excellent video!
I saw this around a decade ago. I was very put off by the english dub...anyways I forgot this movie even existed.
8:26 "You're doin great sweetie" 😂
14:33 🤣🤣😂....followed by 15:33 😭🤣😂
OMG HE WATCHED IT

I don't like to assume stuff about people. But I think Saturn really likes Yuyu Hakusho.

hey kurama's voice was pretty close to the official dub's performance, at least from the clip you showed
Yusuke's voice actor seems to think he's supposed to be playing a superhero.
this damn movie doesn't have english subtitles on the 'very legal sites' that i use, so this video is how i'm 'watching' 'cus that english dub is abysmal lol, they refer to the Sanzu River as the 'River Styx'.. this is Buddhism, not Greek Mythology like what lmfao
I wish they did a re dub of this. Because it is so bad. I could never finish it. An this is coming from a huge yu yu fan.
They need to redub this
The reason Netherworld team got so bad is bc banished.
Low gravity in space, all their muscles atrophied, and they didn't have anyone to train against except each other.
They changed Kuwabara to Kuahara wtf that is so wrong hate it. But the imagery colors and action scenes are outstanding. I do love the clothes
LET'S FUCKING GOOOO
14:14
Steve : Hm-hm-hm Heh-hahahaa
Thanks, I hate it. How do you like the bioworld shirt quality?
I saw this in Japanese in like 2003
Got this from my Blockbuster in the late 90's. Way before the show was licensed by Funimation, and debuted on Adult Swim in the early 2000's. I've only ever watched the Japanese Dub
Kuwabara with that voice pisses me off I don't know why
Wait the movie came out in 1998, but the english dub for the show didn't come out until 2004
It's such a blah movie. I saw this one first, then Golden Seal. I regret that because that one is definitely worse.
Roast him all ya like, but I’d like to see YOU get big on UA-cam to the point where you can change outfits 5 times in the same video smh
The movie had a budget and Kurama was gonna spend it smh
The movies were good, but the way they pronounced Kuwabara's name in "Yu Yu Hakusho The movie: Poltergeist Report" was weird.
I still love this dub
18:13 Huh, same here. The abridged version is no much better then the actual movie.
🔥the dub is trash but the rest is pretty good wouldn’t show it to someone for their first experience tho(or anything probably) only hardcore fans should watch or at least finish the whole series first
Positive comment
The money I’d GIVE for the original English dub actors to act in this movie and for the localizers to fix the script. The animation is SOOOO dang pretty. 🤩
Too bad everything else about it, is pretty bad💀😭
Yeah Genkais not a real combatant anymore dude. She gave all her spunk to Urameshi now she’s ACTUALLY HER AGE a decently fit non-bulky 70ish-some old woman. Aside from being a fit human she’s not much capable of fighting now. I estimate she’d struggle with low class C rank demons.
I really wish they re-dub this Anime movie. Why? FUNimation Studios owns the rights for it now, so what gives? :(
What if we use ai to re dub it correctly lol
Watch Poltergeist Movie in Sub High quality
The dub failed fake voice actors
Do some hxh videos
is this new? These actors are terrible! Was there a reason there was a new voice cast for the movie?
Ha Ha
