Zarana was one of those figures I always wanted to own when I was a kid. My mom told me I just could have two vehicles and six figures that Christmas in 1986, the offer that year was amazing and it was hard to decide and I ended taking other figures. Thirty years later I got her and is one of my favorite action figures.
Had the first version. Still one of my favorite vintage female figures.
Now that you mention Wendy O. Williams, I can see that. I always liked Zarana's punk rock look. So yeah, this all makes sense.
The color change thing with this fam, had to do with a condition Zartan had where he would get sick if he was out in the sun too long, hence the blue/grey sickly color change and why he lived in the swamp.
And this being allergic to the sun disease is a real thing. There is a family from South Africa who had to move to a city in my country where they rarely get any sun to save their kids. Gotta luv Larry Hama for trying to keep it real!
ZARANA!!! Great review bring back memories of Zander and Zarana had them both as a kid and used to think it was awesome and unique how they changed colour
Holy crap, I thought I had owned Zartana, but after watching this I realized it was Zarana #2 which I had instead. The Dreadnoks were always my favorite, I liked the color changing feature.
My Dad had built a solar room off the side of the house, and I would play with my Joes out there, it would get warm and bright in the summer and she would change color.
I have all 4! My favorites!!!

I wish I still had mine but I remember her hair piece on mine changing color too
I remember a GI Joe cartoon where a few of the Joes were somehow turned into kids and Zarana had caught one, I can't remember which Joe it was,. instead of turning him in to Cobra she let him go. I didn't read the comics much so I don't know what her personality was there.
Hoodie Coco 788 knows his Joes.. I use to be nut for GI Joe . I watched the cartoon faithfully and collected the figures I remember having over 100 of them wish I would of kept them .

I personally prefer the original version to the 2nd "Joker" version, but neither figure really caption the character in the cartoon series. The second version has features that are too small for the face. The eyes, nose and mouth are scrunched into the center, leaving Zarana with a very long chin, which is odd. Both Zarana figures are better than the Zandar figure though. I never really liked Zandar. Zartan really was the cool one in that family. I always wondered if Zartan and his family were created in a lab instead of being born mutants. Thus their chameleon skin color powers.

I found my old collection and I have the first version and her joints and paint are 100% grade A+ quality!
17:41 $20 says it's there to minimize her side "exposure". As mentioned earlier, she's showing a lot of skin for the 80's
As a kid I had the original version, and never could get it to change color
I never knew that about the first head sculpt. Cool detail on her gloves and boots. I always liked her just for those details. Her weapon was weird to me too. Like a radiator fan blade on a rifle, but good thing for vehicles like the Ferret. She looks cool on one of those. Great review and observations. Rock on HCC! And don't forget to turn the Zartan family over every 20-30 mins for optimal sunning.
I was just on ebay looking at something, came back here and see a related 8yr old video. Just want to say that even in the 80s I thought she looked more like Sheena Easton.

Same... Seems like something someone might find at a flea market in the south and just restored the explody parts...and csrries it around looking for someone to "gift" it to.
I prefer the original head as well, looks more natural. The earings could use paint though.
It supposed 2 have paint on the earrings but I can wear off quickly mine still got some paint left on the earrings
I had the version 2 zarana and she never did change color for me. I never had zandar, but wanted him, (to complete the fam) because I also had zartan who did change color. I always figured zarana and zandar were made with the regular plastic. (Maybe the color change plastic was not mixed well.) Love the vids.

I just recently had to replace the O ring in my Zarana. She no longer can change color. I don't know if its because of it's age or having to seperate the torso. There's some food for thought
Thanks for the help. I was wandering that, because I had to pry her torso apart, it was sealed pretty tight.

Great review. Maybe the plastic was too brittle to hold a screw, or they were afraid, over time of being left in the sunlight on windowsills, the plastic would get brittle. I remember holding Zartan when I was 12 and thinking the chest plastic even looked and felt different. It was incredibly smooth with no real hard angles; all of the definition was soft and kind of rounded of feeling. Zarana and Zandar are different, and '86 was my half in/half out year. Before that year, I had everything released.
Maybe the test ones they did with Zartan showed the chest cavity expanded and would crack the screw mount. Voila, entirely glued chest pieces!
Zartan is from the New Orleans the Bayou swamp lands he said it was his home in a few episodes of Gi Joe. Dread Knox are supposed to represent a type of modern day ☠ road Pirates, mate kinda like Mad Max beyond the thunder dome vibe, later from Derdnocks came Monkey Wrench, Thrasher, Road Hog or War Pig I think 🤔

That's a missile on her backpack and you can get the original paint to touch up your figures also!
So if sunlight is Zartan and his sibling's natural enemy...they really really got screwed being from Australia where the Ozone layer practically doesn't exist!
I like this figure but think it would've worked better as a female Dreadnok rather than Zartan's sister. For that role I would liked to have seen a female master(mistress) of disguise possibly with interchangeable hair pieces or heads so she could pass off as lady Jaye or Scarlett. Maybe if they bring back this character they could make it a feature? I suppose I could write or contact Hasbro with this idea, and who knows? They do seem to appreciate feedback from fans and collectors. The original version of Zartan came with a bearded mask that resembled Breaker. This made sense to me -If you were to infiltrate an operation like the Joes you would probably be best off integrating yourself with the backroom intelligence guys to get security clearance for their secret missions and operations rooms rather than High profile top brass where you would be more conspicuous, or their frontline action heroes like Duke or Snake eyes for similar reasons,

Cool I think it was something to do with the plastic because I had the same issues with the earring version had she did Chang but it took longer than zartan or zandar..cool vid man never really cared too much for her or zandar oh yea I think the kneepads were cobras..but I'm not really sure but they kind of look like them.

Hah! I know I'm 3 years late on this video, but after you said she has a "Bride of Frankenstein thing going on" all I can see is Madeline Kahn. That's exactly who she looks like.
It's not often I disagree with your opinion but I'm sorry I really disagree with your comment about the Dreadnoks having poor weapons I mean just look at Road Pig all that guys weapons are awesome the wrist mounted crossbow was awesome but but the cinder block hammer was just awesome I loved it as a kid,then there's Buzzer the dude had a freaking chainsaw ffs the assault rifles were good enough I always liked Rippers one but for me it was Monkeywrenchs assault rifle with pitch fork/trident bayonet that was my absolute favourite I always used to use that gun no matter who I was playing with I got a 2nd one but have no idea who it came with for 10yo me seeing my guy dual wield them bad boys was as cool as it got lol. PS change this vids name it was a nightmare to find have the characters name first then any descriptions afterwards.

I thought the romance was with Beach Head.
I was not a fan of the Dreadknocks and wasn't impressed by. Zartan or other color changing characters. I did however own Zarana, which probably had more to do with her love interest in Mainframe.

sirkowski Because of her glued torso, it is very difficult to replace the o-ring. It is possible to get the chest and back pieces apart, but the technique sounds risky, and I'm afraid to try it.

If the writer of that profile really thinks those traits make you "evil" then they really need to get out more. I understand that you can't be graphic due it being a toy, but at the very least they could say that she enjoys torturing prisoners, executing people who don't follow orders, arsons buildings, things of that nature, not that she has tantrums, pushes into lines and doesn't leave tips???
