After disliking Dr. Morton for so many episodes I'm surprised that I'm now beginning to like him! Hope he and Mike Rossi can become colleagues in the future. And I really enjoy the relationship between Allison & Norman; it's almost like brother and sister, if he'd just get over his crush.

Modguy61 That moment is a credit to both the writers and the actors. It would be easy to have written Dr. Morton as a one-dimensional villain, but like most all of us, he's a complicated human being. This is one of the many touches that makes "Peyton Place" stand out from nighttime *and* daytime soap operas, and frankly from other dramas.

joan thomas WHAT? They smoked like chimneys, drank like “ladies and gentlemen” translation, everyone mutually and silently agreed to ignore the reality they were a bunch of functioning (or not) drunks, bleeped out any language the company thought may hurt their image creating lost ad revenue and there was plenty of “excessive violence.” Ex: Apparently you didn’t watch Westerns.
TV was *not* “great” then: It was highly contrived, artificial, a mechanism for promoting a “consume until you’re a bloated cartoon” concept of “The Good Life(™️),” being a housewife purchasing a particular detergent was the ultimate reason for women to swoon in orgasmic ecstasy etc.-and ignore the obvious social problems. Oh Ms. Thomas, no, uh uh.
Not until “All In the Family,” “The Jefferson’s” and “Murphy Brown” did we start to see at least *some acknowledgement* that all was not well behind closed doors or in public. TV did not reflect society: It created and maintained a Dream that was rapidly deteriorating. It refused to acknowledge the obvious to the oblivious-and you’re still oblivious decades later. Clearly the prescriptions for all kinds of “maladies” from excessive adipose tissue to Mother’s Little Helpers were widely available and kept people in a state of contrived self-satisfaction or just plain numb-and they worked, apparently.

@@tundrawomansays5067 The trouble is, we've gone from one extreme to the other today; the shows you mentioned were high quality TV that doesn't exist anymore. "All in the Family" and "The Jeffersons" were two of the greats, but today people would be offended by things that were said. As a matter of fact, I'm surprised that the PC people haven't fought to try and force them from being shown on all those retro channels.

Shows from the mid 60's were trying to diversify a bit, as there'd be episodes where a black man was a police officer, doctor, lawyer, or some other professional. (I remember seeing a show where the judge was black.) Black women, however, almost always seemed to be housekeepers.
