The glove reveal gets all the glory, and it's a fantastic way to end things, but the Captain saying "We know what you thought, Mr. Kingston" is what cinches it for me. The reveal that he was never actually working behind Columbo's back, but playing into his hands instead.

Love whenever there's a "killer tries to get Columbo taken off the case" plotline. None of them can imagine that another well-connected criminal has tried the same thing before! I bet Columbo's superiors are pretty bored of that trick.

i mean, you don't become lieutenant over night, or without good reason either. honestly, id be very interested in a prequel series, where he's just starting out at the bottom of the pecking order, how much harder it would've been to go to the lengths we see him to catch these criminals (or at least prove to them that they know they did it, even if they both know he can't bring them fully to justice)

The interesting thing is had Columbo not been so thorough, Kingston could STILL have got away with it - or at least, used what few defenses he had to buy himself a bit more time. Columbo gradually pares away his remaining counter-arguments until he has nothing left. It's like watching an amazing game of chess - Columbo carefully removes anything he could use, then the reveal of the gloves is the checkmate.

I love the format of the Columbo mysteries. In most mysteries, we have 5-6 suspects and we don't which one of them did it until the very end. We're as much in the dark as the detective is. In a "Columbo" episode, we know who the killer is right from the start of the episode. We know how he did it and we know how he covered his tracks. We (the audience) have all the information that Columbo lacks and the fun is watching him try to figure it out.

I had to watch this episode countless times to really appreciate the genius storytelling. Every major character has an arc. And it totally reverses our initial impression. Dale at first appears to be the consumate art critic with gobs of natural talent. His Aunt, at first appears to be a dotty, weird and eccentric lady. By the end of the episode, however, we learn that the Aunt was the true genius behind the famous art collection, as she was the one who actually chose the initial paintings when they were first purchased. According to her, a few turned out to be winners. Dale, however, turns out to be a not-so-special art critic who was actually riding the coattails of his Aunt's success.

I must have watched all these episodes at least 10 times and I still love’m just the same. Peter Falk was perfect in this role. The best detective ever.🙏👍👍

Literally one of my favorite cases in the show. The way the criminal breaks down in this one will never cease to amuse me.

Straight up the greatest finale, and possibly the greatest TV moment, ever. Setup and execution, utter perfection

Watched this episode when it first aired, almost 50 years ago. The climactic reveal is just as exhilarating now as it was then!

He walks around with his hands in his pockets the whole time and we don't even realise till the end.

This is by far my favorite ending. Not episode-ending. The lip quiver is the best thing ever. Then the gloves at the end. Absolutely brilliant.

Is this the best "gotcha" in the entire Colombo catalog. This is so clever.

Probably one of my favourite (if not my favourite) GOTCHA in the series. The expressions on the killers face from when Columbo tells him he touched the paintings are priceless. I'm still watching the repeats on TV every Sunday in the UK.

My favorite episode. It's so well done on every level, and Ross Martin's reaction at the end is worth the price of admission alone. Let's see today's shows hold up as well after 50+ years.

I love a show that is a step ahead of me. First time i watched this i was thinking "well, he could have planted the fingerprints there and then no?" and then the gloves come out.......no more words uttered and the show ends. Brilliance.
