People who come to my house cannot stand when I watch Columbo because at the beginning of every episode, I say, "Oh, this is a good one." Rest In Peace, Mrs. Columbo is on right now on Great American Family channel. And, yes, this is a good one.
Honestly, Columbo wouldn’t do such a thing. Even having been face to face with someone who had every intent of off’ing his wife and then him, he still understands that the slap to his face was driven by an emotional overload from being played like a cheap fiddle Columbo didn’t even make a hint of attempted murder on his life in another episode with the Dobermans that were trained to attack with a kill command… even though the attempt on his life was genuine with Laurel and Hardy, he knew that he wasn’t in harms way due to them being reprogrammed to give dog smooches rather than mauling ~SHOULD~ he tack on extra charges for attempted murder by dog attack or for assaulting a police officer for being slapped? Probably for the dogs but I’d say only maybe for the slap Columbo is too decent a man to kick her while she’s down and 100% going to jail for murder and 2 counts of attempted murder; the slap wouldn’t even register on the charge sheet compared to the other charges
The way he acted when he was pretending to have been poisoned was one of the great scenes in television history and certainly in his career. Utterly amazing I’ve watched it multiple times.
It's sad how delusional she is that she thinks he would just blindly accept a jar from a woman who is a suspect in a current murder he's investigating. She is also the widow of a man he put behind bars for murder. The same husband died behind bars and he knows that she was seeing a doctor for her mental well-being. Of course, he's gonna turn around and take it to the boys down at the lab.

Helen Shaver-an absolutely beautiful actress playing the part of a calculating and very deadly woman consumed with revenge. I think that’s what I like so much about this episode. Also, what a treat to see Roscoe Lee Browne with that very sophisticated voice of his. Yes, a very memorable episode.

This all started because the receptionist at police HQ did a poor job. They should never give a police officer vacation status over an external phone call.
The receptionist was covering for Columbo; he was using the time to analyze the poison in the marmalade, set up his wife's fake funeral, arrange a phony house to set up her confessing to Columbo, etc. He knew she wouldn't make a move until he'd be available again. What a better way to make it seem she succeeded with a funeral for Mrs. Columbo, then let her confess as she enjoys watching Columbo expire?

I like the window on the 70s that some of these provide. Good eg is the ransom for a dead man, featuring Lee Grant, where Colombo asked “how do you do it. Work for a woman.? Columbo’s pretty enlightened but it’s interesting how abnormal this situation seemed to screenwriters at the time😂 And there’s a pretty unsavoury episode the “nightlife” one where the perp is clearly in a very abusive relationship, accidentally kills her partner and gets no allowances at all from the system. And this one was early 90s! However on the whole falk’s genius shines through in _every_ episode that’s why I love it. And the first one was a Spielberg direction I think.
So many good episodes, but this ranks at or near the top. Whatever calculations murderers made against Lieutenant Columbo, he was a lot smarter than they could ever imagine.
I'd like to imagine that Colombo doesn't actually have a wife at all, and all his calls to her are faked for keeping up the charade to people around him, in case anyone plans on trying to use it against him, like in this episode.

He was notorious for adlibbing extra things to get genuine confused or annoyed reactions out of the other actors, many of the things about his family were made up on the spot. Even the "one more thing" was originally him just legitimately forgetting something, then coming back. But the director loved it, kept it, and started putting it into the scripts
Poisoning has been a woman's choice of murdering going back to the 19th century and before. They were not strong enough to kill a man outright using brute force, but they could slip poison into his food. Columbo already knew or at least strongly suspected she intended to kill himself and his wife, so he had the marmalade tested for poison at the police lab as soon as she gave it to him. So she basically incriminated herself, even if she had never spoken a single word to Columbo.
Such a criminally under-rated show. As a kid I was bored. Going back and watching the show as an adult I can appreciate the genius of this fantastic series. Peter Falk was the icing on this beautiful and clever cake.
Worse than that, Falk wanted to do a finale, called Columbo's Last Case, but the network turned him down, apparently because they figured the character was out of date. Not too long after, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and eventually couldn't remember he had ever played Columbo. It would have been episode 70.
It was one of the most popular and critically acclaimed TV shows of all time, it was on for years, and had several comebacks, it always attracted A-List actors, directors and writers, it remains popular today all over the world - it had a huge resurgence of popularity on streaming services during Covid. I would hardly call it underrated, much less criminally so.

This has to be one of the more difficult Gotcha’s to set up for Columbo- that faux funeral. As a tabletop gamer, I know how hard it is to set more than one person in the same place at once.

That part with the psychiatrist who can't tell Columbo anything is fascinating. The Tarasoff case that established the Duty to Warn if a mental health provider believes their client to be an acute danger to someone didn't happen until 1976; this episode was shot in the early 70's, which was before the ability/duty to talk to the police and potential victim was legally established.
I find her last name of Shaver to be ironic. I saw her in a movie in which she did a nude scene. Let’s just say no shaving had taken place before filming!

Almost as much as that little blonde boy with the glasses that always guest starred as a smart nerd on tv shows in that same time period.
Also played the wagon-master/cook, in "The Cowboys", with John Wayne. Kind of a James Earl Jones "lite", as pertaining to speech-pattern smoothness. Smooth as Mr. Jones sounded--but not quite as "Darth-Vaderish", lol! Mr. Browne had that softer, "whiskey-ish" tone instead, or at least I thought so?
I feel like I remember some episode where he comments on having to carry one because of the assignment and that he doesn’t like it. Because of his eye and problems with depth perception I always figured he didn’t bother with one.
Huge fan of the show, but I felt this one could have done without the redundant funeral. "Attempted Murder" would have already been established with physical evidence, no confession necessary. Neat premise, but went in the wrong direction.
In this case it wouldn't have mattered. Once the marmalade she gave to Columbo tested positive for poison, she could be charged with intent to kill a police officer even if she never said a word to Columbo.
I have seen many episodes MANY times. Last time I saw this one was on NBC, its 1st airing close to 50 years ago. Still not a fav but maybe I judged a bit too harshly.
It's a shame this didn't include the scene at the end with Columbo talking to his wife on this phone. Its a very sweet scene

Huge fan of the show, but I felt this one could have done without the redundant funeral. "Attempted Murder" would have already been established with physical evidence, no confession necessary. Neat premise, but went in the wrong direction.

I have seen many episodes MANY times. Last time I saw this one was on NBC, its 1st airing close to 50 years ago. Still not a fav but maybe I judged a bit too harshly.
