    My father and mother went present that day, they were in the section next to where the tire landed in 1999. They say it’s one of the most scariest and saddest things they have witnessed.

      Thank you for sharing that story. I could imagine that was a very traumatic experience for both your parents and everyone in attendance that day. I've been fortunate enough to only have to go through a situation like that once in my life, although it was an incident that I didn't see.

      I was 4th person hit by the tire that night 3 others before me lost there lives right in front of my face. I've never seen anything ever like that. I do thank all the fans for praying and helping. It was very tragic.

    Another IndyCar Story well done, Ronald!
    Honestly, IndyCar racing at Charlotte does look cool, but it’s a shame that there was some issues. Especially the 1999 crash, which ruined the relationship between the IRL and Charlotte.
    It was cool to see Josef Newgarden do a demo run at the Charlotte Roval, but an IndyCar race at the Charlotte Roval would not really be the best, in my opinion.
    I’d love to see IndyCar at the Charlotte Oval, but I understand if they’ll never comeback there

    Almost had another similar incident today in the Indy 500 with a tire flying over the catchfence but luckily barely missing a grandstand full of people and hitting a car instead

      When I saw that crash, my eyes were fixated on that tire. I didn't even realize Kirkwood had flipped. Thank whatever deity is out there that nobody got hurt.

    I was 14 at this race with my dad in one of the Visionaire suites up top. I remember it well. No one really knew there was a serious issue until Humpy Wheeler came on the TV and explained the situation. It was very somber - I’ve never seen such a large crowd disperse a sporting event so peacefully and quietly.
    Great video, loved the history lesson included. Very well done.

      The 1999 Race Broadcast is really eerie to me. I can't even imagine how it was at the track. Glad you enjoyed the video!

    I was there that night. They had claimed interest was high, but honestly, i got my ticket for free. They gave thousands of tickets out the last 2 weeks or so before the race. I was in turn 1 and the cars are so small and fast you can barely see them, especially at night. We had just stood up to leave, and then the wreck happened. The fire was so tall and bright that you just felt something bad had happened. We rode home in silence. Ill never forget that night.

    3:48 I know you never need video ideas but as a drag racer I have always been fascinated with the story of the nhra sanctioning the indy 500

    • @CountyLineFilms
      @CountyLineFilms  5 місяців тому +1

      The main reason that nearly happened was because the NHRA owns IRP a few miles away. That was the information shared on nascarman history's video about the first IndyCar Spilt.

    I was a IRL crew member at the Charlotte race. My parents were there. Luckily, several hundred yards up the straightaway from the scene. Jeff Gordon's mother was our scorer. Bad night, to say the least. Attendance was terrible. Indy Car just isn't that popular in NASCRAP land.

    as I'm making this comment it has been about a week since the indy 500, there was a near freak accident as a wheel almost went into the crowd. very scary

    I would like to see your take on the Indy races at Texas World Speedway in College Station Texas. I went there a lot as a kid. I remember at one of the Twin 250 (USAC Stock cars and Indycars ran on the same day) AJ Foyt ran both races.

    • @CountyLineFilms

      I might have to cover some of those races one day. Thank you for the suggestion!

      I would love to know more about this track, too! A few years ago I saw a video of a guy racing his Miata (or something) on the road course there right before it closed for good. It looked really cool (if dilapidated)

    I wonder if Indycar would ever consider coming back to Charlotte whether to run the oval or ROVAL. Texas motor speedway is almost identical to the Charlotte oval and they have run good races there. I think even the Roval would be great for Indy. I think the market is there in the Carolinas especially considering Penske HQ is there.

    You know as much as I would love to see a return to the Charlotte Oval for IndyCar, I know that given this instance, it most likely won't happen. But, I would be willing to compromise and have a Charlotte ROVAL race here, I mean, there is that clip of Josef Newgarden doing test laps.... so why not make it a reality? I would be definitely down with that.....

    The cars were to fast for the track. I remember 2 cars spinning out of control before the green flag was done waving to start the race. Should have been a sign.

    I hoping IndyCar return to Charlotte Motor Speedway and run on the Roval just like NASCAR Did and for safety and no oval at Charlotte because it too Dangerous and I hoping IndyCar will return to Charlotte and become of Charlotte Roval for 2024

      I'd be down to replace the Second IMS Road Course race with the Charlotte Roval. Albeit I wouldnt want them to share the weekend with NASCAR, have IndyCar be the premier race of the weekend. Chances of that happening though are slim to none.

    Humpy Wheeler was a complete coward. If this was NASCAR do you think he would have cancelled the race. HELL NO!! Enough said!

    • @CountyLineFilms
      @CountyLineFilms  Рік тому +1

      If it was in the early stages of a race,, He definitely would've canceled it as well. It was the morally correct thing to do considering the deaths, and was handled with a lot more grace, humility and common sense than the Spectator Deaths at the US 500 the year prior. Humpy Wheeler made the right call.

    • @jeffwhisenhunt929
      @jeffwhisenhunt929 3 місяці тому

      People were leaving in droves well before he announced the cancelation anyway. He had no choice after the past races not getting canceled. It was definitely the right decision to cancel the race.
