Ed Jones won the Indy lights title by a point or two. And only because of team orders. His teammate basically pulled over and stopped on the last lap and waited for jones to pass. It’s one of the reasons the Schmitt Peterson team pulled out of Indy lights racing. In my opinion he didn’t deserve that scholarship. But on a positive note Great videos!!
I may make a video about that whole controversy. I remember people being capital P Pissed off about it

@@Kyleconley59 So true. what’s even more interesting if you go down the rabbit hole, if Santi won the scholarship, maybe Wickens wouldn’t have been signed. Don’t get me wrong, Robert Wickens is an incredible talent and most deservingly a Indycar ride and potentially an Indycar championship winner. Can’t be said enough about Robert. But Santi and Schmitt had a very good relationship. I know this because we were a sponsor of Santi and friends with him also So we travelled to all races during his career and spent time in pits with them. Sam secured Santi the Arrow sponsorship for his second year when they moved to Belardi racing. Unfortunately bad luck and an inferior car was had to compete with Herta and Oward. But again. Maybe Robert wouldn’t have been on SPM’s radar.
As the CART/Champcar heavyweights slowly migrated to IRL, the IRL regulars couldn’t keep up. Some of this may have been due to skill differences, I always saw the late 90s IRL as triple-A minor league to CART’s big show. I have to believe a lot of it was financial too as I remember CART teams having massive R&D departments back then and IRL was mostly a spec series. Pennzoil Panther was the only team I remember keeping the CART teams honest week in and week out.
Is Greg Ray a one year wonder or a matter of the field slowly getting better as the IRL developed out of its CART-lite identity?
Edit: for clarity, I'm absolutely aware the IRL developed its identity IN OPPOSITION to CART, I just meant that for a while it was almost a CART feeder series
I think I'd still put him in the one year wonder column, just because of how different every single year was compared to 99. I doubt he would've won another championship even if the great CART migration was pushed back a few years
Given the driver quality in the IRL in the late 90's he was definitely a one-hit wonder; had he had that year in the early-mid 2000's he wouldn't've come close to a title.

Nigel was in the height of his powers during his one championship year in indycar but after that it went to hell
When you do the Mansell video, make sure to contrast it with Michael Andretti’s. F1 and CART sent their champions to each other’s series. Mansell shined and Andretti was abysmal. I contend that Michael’s failure set back the chances of an American driver racing in F1 by 13 years and even with a driver or two since then, over 30 years later, F1 still looks down on American drivers because of how Michael just did not measure up.
