I once pretended to put a cold wet teabag down the back of someone's dress (by touching it on her neck but keeping hold of it). When she screamed I put it in her mouth. She's Italian so the following shouting episode was hilarious.

Much better than the CSI shows like Miami where one minute they are using a nuclear microscope to find evidence off a hair on a sandflies scrotum and the next they are handling stuff at a crime scene with bare hands. The inconsistency drives me nerts.

So metals like nickel can be found. Though some metals can only be detected by passive detection such as copper. Since both passive and active detectors can be handheld and walk through there really isn't anyway to tell which one this is some models even have the ability to use both means

I'm not sure if it's different everywhere but there is a metal detector in out local courts that dose detect coins, I worked there as a cleaner for some time I had to switch all of my piercings to wood and bone (I have stretched ears) not to set them off everyday. Some of the airports in the UK and EU also use these types of metal detectors too, there are even full body scanners here that can see through your clothing to check for packages. It's kind of intrusive but it works so if you fly to the UK I hope your not shy lol because the airport security can see everything and I mean everything
