The "well you know" and "yeah I know" is all it took to catch up about his wife and child's murder by Red John. That's a friend right there.

And he’s always pronounces it with a z instead of an s, except when he was on the plane professing his love to her.
You're reading too much into it. She was a coworker, and that's it.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this scene and shows how fantastic the show's writers are. show seemed so real and what folks would actually say. guys reaction to jane and guarded look at lisbon, then his wife smacking jane and asking about the highway patrol? then when lisbon asked how do I look like a cop and she says if cagney and lacey had a child and called her Pepper? LOL sooooo good. then jane says to pete to take her to see the elephant. Of the many many great scenes in mentalist this was the best written and performed and my fav I play over and over again.
Yeah, good writing. Pete dodged questions about Danny so smoothly that I almost didn't notice it.
I also like how Lisbon took the hint and wandered off with Pete so she won't hear anything Sam and Jane talk about. I caught that she was giving Sam a chance to talk without talking to the police immediately, but much later, it occurred to me that Lisbon was also turning a blind eye in case Jane was covering for Danny. (In fairness, she probably couldn't have stopped him.)
Pete and Sam didn't like or trust law enforcement, not even when their loved ones needed help,
But for Patrick Jane (who was wanted by the FBI at the time), they passed his letters on to Lisbon the ex-CBI small town cop.
Those are some good friends.
Lisbon let Danny slip away rather than get tangled up answering questions about his con game. Plus, when Jane killed Red John to avenge Annie and Charlotte, Lisbon helped Jane and covered his escape, losing her job and destroying her own agency to do it. I'm sure word got around. They might or might not trust Lisbon normally, but they knew she could be counted on if it had to do with Jane.

Wasn't it because of Bertram and Blake association? If the director of the CBI was a criminal, then there would have been problems even without Jane. Lisbon and her team were simply unlucky with their boss.
This title made me laugh SO HARD! 'How do I look like a cop?' Epic! Best question in any 90s movie!
that went over my head before but now I get it. huh. how he says "I haven't seen you here in a while" "well, you know" "yeah, I know". good writing.
I also like how Pete effortlessly deflected questions about Danny, without looking like he had anything to hide. He looks big, dumb, lovable, and guileless, but he's actually very sharp. I guess we see that later when he slips away from his cuffs.
Jane's face when his wife is mentioned, ghosts still chasing him beneath the bravado.
I loved it when Sam slapped Patrick across the cheek
Also, that the slap caught Jane by surprise. Immediately establishes that she's familiar with and resistant to Jane's reading and mind games.

I do it all the time to my car. It works.
"Daisy would run over her own kids for an apple." The basket of apples was sitting next to the elephant, unattended, when Lisbon and Pete walked up.
Also, every car I've owned since long before electronic locks has worked like that.
I gotta get me an elephant.

They shouldn't be near a house
They should've kept the whole Pepper nickname going on the few occasions when these two showed up again. But they didn't. A little too heavy on the continuity, maybe.
