- "There's no logic to what I do. I'm not technical. I'm a feel-writer. When I feel like it's going to happen, it happens. But it's a part of the extension of me." In this episode of String Theory, we talk with Ed Roland and Will Turpin of Collective Soul about their songwriting process and early musical inspirations.
Collective Soul relies on Ernie Ball Earthwood 80/20 acoustic strings to get their signature sound: ernieb.al/earthwood8020

I just wanna tell everybody who watches this that Ed is the real deal. I'm 24, and he's my biggest hero- "The World I Know" saved me from suicide. I met him for the first time when I was 21 and he told me that I was an inspiration to him and that I was a hug, embracing me 5 times!! Well fast forward a few years later and I'll be seeing them for my 18th and 19th times this summer. I've gotten so close to Ed and Collective Soul. They've sang happy birthday once to me on stage. Ed is such a loving and caring man, and it reflects in his songs. If you really pay attention, all of his songs are about love and he's very serious about giving his love to others. I HIGHLY recommend you see Collective Soul live before its too late. Ed is 60, still rockin' but it's now or never to see them. If a 24 year old girl can dig em you can, too.
I love your passion for a class act band, and Ed is the best front man in the business. I hope you are well girl! Remember, Love screams everywhere!
My all time favorite singer/songwriter for my all time favorite band. Long live Collective Soul!
Such a great songwriter and despite the success of Collective Soul I feel he is so underrated. Great videos as usual 🤘🤘
Seen them twice. Fantastic live band!
This was awesome! Always get to hear them sing, but hearing them talk is just as good. Would love to hear more from Will and Dean as well.
Ed, I'm 60 years old. Your music keeps me alive. Thank you and God Bless You!
This series is so f*cking good. I grew up listening to Collective Soul. I’m so stoked they are still going.
I literally have that same Breedlove 12 string guitar hung up on the wall right next to my screen. Had to do a double take!
Elton John one of my very first inspirations too, Saturday…in grade school…my love for his music never ended. And ELO….I can never get enough of them, Elton John or y’all. Di’Addario strings my favorite and still my favorite ❤
Had their first cd, played it a lot on my friends PlayStation
It’s all about the songs. As a musician all you’re providing is a foundation for the vocals.
So many great hits…December my favorite ❤❤❤❤❤
Love the tone of their guitars
I've always loved Collective Soul. Those first 5 albums are peak CS for me. Youth and Afterwords are great too. The newer stuff is hit or miss but still some great songs in the mix.
I taught myself how to play guitar from buying tab books for their albums. Great song writing, great music. I'm looking forward to hearing the upcoming new album!
Forever the best!
You’re the greatest
Good vid!
💞👏🥂 Viva le virtuoso! The best!!!
Yeah
He plays very well
Best.
Cool 12strings! What is it?
Looks like a Breedlove but I could be wrong
Yes, Breedlove. They were promoting them a few years back.
The pearls though? wtf?
