One of the best Andertons video ever. It contains 5 seconds of actual playing time but was 10mins of pure entertainment...Ernie Ball make great products. Paul Gilbert is a legend in his own lunchtime, brilliant !!
Awesome test, would love to see a guitar string comparison between different brands. I'm a huge supporter of Elixir Polyweb strings, best guitar strings in the world in my opinion! Super durability, they don't get dirty easily and they can handle me doing crazy bends and playing super aggressively. I tried Ernie Ball, D'Addario etc. and they gave out a lot earlier than Elixir strings.
Philip McKnight did a test like this a while ago with all kinds of strings. Most also went to A and NYXLs did A#. So I'd say in that regard those two are even.
He has said in a few interviews he is losing his hearing. Guess you have seen him playing live with a huge set of red headphones, he is trying to protect the hearing he has left
Years ago.....32 years to be exact, i started playing guitar. I tried all that were available....there are other good brands.....but everytime i put on a set of Slinkys, and with the first strum.....that zing! That wonderful, bright and full zing! I now love the Cobalts, Paradigm, and of course, the classic Slinkys.
I started out with Ernie Balls and they're fine for standard tunings and stuff like that. I admit I haven't tried these ones though. But since I play a whole step down and in lower tunings, I've always loved D'Addario(regulars or NYXL) for metal music because they just sound brighter. I want that cut for lower tunings, so I can't remember the last time I played anything other than D'Addario.

Interesting that Ernie Balls started breaking so much that I tried other brands and ended up with NYXL. IMO they started making them cheap so they could push a higher string price point.
Ernie ball hybrid slinkies for life!!! Im gonna try out the hybrid paradigm's now. I dont suffer from string breaks often but a stronger string may give me better tone? Who knows worth a try for sure. Thanks guys!!
I've been using Ernies since day one.....I did switch to Goretex for a bit...but changed back....been using the Cobalt strings...anything E.B. and I'm a happy guitar player!
I need to give these a try, I've been using D'addario NY XLs and they have been awesome but every once in a while its cool to try some new string sets :)
If you want a guarantee against corrosion and short string life, use a set of Elixir strings. I've had Elixir sets on some of my guitars for years, and they still sound great. They have a special coating that resists corrosion and that annoying "finger squeak" when you slide your fingers around. As a former Ernie Ball user who switched to Elixir, I swear by them.
Pff, been using Elixir for years. They last absolute eternity, and feel 'fresh' for quite a while. Never felt the need to restring in a few weeks time.
Been an EB user since forever and my G always snaps first. Recently bought a Strandberg that has what I believe are either GHS strings or D’Addrio NYXLs, I’m now a convert.
i think i might give these new strings a shot. I've never played Ernie Ball since 1999. They rusted out on me in 2 weeks and they've been the only brand i've ever broken a string on.
I use a tremolo (whammy bar) a lot and have broken many strings. Out of all of them Fender strings have been the worst breaking after a week. Ernie Ball Super Slinky strings have been more towards the middle of the scale breaking after a month. The best strings that I have ever tried are DR Dimebag strings. I have put those through hell doing bends, dive bombs, pulling sharp (my guitar is routed out so the Floyd Rose has a lot of travel), etc.... Despite that they tend to go around five or six months before breaking. DR makes great strings!
Yes please do a corrosion test! I can only play one brand, that lasts me longer then a week, Elixir nanowebs, but they are hard to play, the tension makes it heavy to bend.
Lee, did you see what type of Pick Paul was playing? to me it looks like his white Ibanez signature pick, but form what I have read he hadn't been using those in a while and was using Dunlop Tortex picks ....
One of the many things Ernie Ball does right, is easy packaging. You open up the packet and inside are 6 envelopes with a string each, with the string gauge in giant font. You really have to be very drunk to screw that up. A couple of weeks ago I wanted to restring my guitar with something fancier, so I got one of them d'addario cobalt coated jazz whatsathingies. Except inside the package the strings are bundled in two's, all together. You have to reference the packaging to really know what gauge each string is. And of course there is no standard for the colouring of these, so with bad lighting and a slightly inebriated state I fucked up and swapped the black with the purple beads, and the yellow and gold coloured ones. After figuring it out and attempting to take them off again, try to wrap the now curled wire back on another post, I was fed up, couldn't be bothered with it so I just put some wire cutters on them and placed my ernie ball backup pack. No dicking around and was done in 10 minutes. I'm not saying that was anyones fault but my own, but I'll be damned if I ever buy another d'addario pack again. Keep it simple you idiots. Also what are these people doing that they keep breaking their strings? The last time I broke my high-e was in 2009 or so, I only really replace strings when I need to clean my fretboard, which is once every 18 months or so. Just keep your nut and bridge lubed, make sure that there are no sharp edges on frets or tuners and strings will last a very long time.
"Ernie Ball is the most unbreakable there is" I've never found Ernie Ball strings that good. I used to switch between brands for years due to stock or 'just because' reasons, and Ernie Ball strings have never lasted much, hell, in one ocasion, i remember the E string breaking in around a week. Nowadays i'd suggest D'addario or Rotosound. Love both, one is more durable, the other one just sounds great. Not many cases of broken strings with both brands. Elixir are awesome too. Mix of both. Will try the paradigm, tho.
Love elixir. Find you have to play them for a week or two first then they sort of calm down lol I can understand why people new to them think oh my god the first time the put them on as they do feel very different. Fantastic strings though.
They last forever! Retrung one of my guitars with it 3-4 months ago, stopped playing it for a month, and picked it back up with not a stitch of corrosion and they still sounded new! I love Ernie Balls, but they rust too fast for someone without a guitar tech
Friend have tried them and say they are great..but having watched 100's of rig rundowns,I've never heard of any pro that uses them.and they'd get them cheap...
I don't really keep to a particular manufacture of strings, I'm always bouncing around between 9s and 10s, depending on how my practice is keeping up. My problem is finding a pack that hasn't corroded before I bought it, I always thought it was the little guitar shops near me that just didn't move enough strings to keep a fresh stock. Strings tend to go on really nice a clean but gum up in a few weeks, or I pull a set from my case to find they've corroded in the package. I'm thinking it's the weather where I live combined with the materials used to make the strings. I've changed strings each time I moved (Southern California, LA and OC areas) now that I think about it. However, Ernie Ball strings are always great performers, along with Elixer, and GHS.

ernie ball has been good to me i dunno what the others are saying. only the regular slinky ones though. I've recently tried the cobalt ones and they sound great but they hurt a little bit more imo. But the regular ones are great, they are the ones I'm most comfortable with so far but against that's just my opinion.
I think the main reason people always complain about breaking ernies is that they're not sweat resistant at all. Acidity kills the. I'm lucky and I never rust my strings tbh. But they do get dirty. Anyways, just put a set of these on the other day and testing them right now. (not that I even break strings often on bends but it'll be a fun test)
how long nyxl could last? I like d'addrio regular series but It corrode so fast. So currently I'm using elixir polyweb, not bad, but I miss crispiness from d'addario.
It depends on whether you sweat much or wear out the strings fast. I guess that Elixir is fine for long plays, but NYXL is much better tonewise. Don't think that NYXL last longer that regular DaDDarios. I would suggest having like... 10 set of strings instead of 3 expensive ones. Fresh are all fine mostly. It depends on your budget and preferences.
I've had a set of 11's on my Les Paul for a year now. I've slackened them off to clean the neck and strings but there's no corrosion. I'm determined to see how long they will stay bright, it's become a challenge. Same set of strings this time next year? Very possible by the looks of it.
where did the strings break at anyway. the bridge? the nut? the machine head? the ball end? usually breaks at the bridge or the ball end becomes unraveled. I have had a `string` of ball-end breaks from an .008. I just re-wrapped the ball-end and was good to go again but that's an area of concern I suppose.
Is this model of Paul's guitar very good, it looks a little bit strange? Do he use Gibson or Ibanez? I am also interested if strings influence sound/tone or rather weakly? I understand that it's very important for good strings not to break, what sometimes happens during concerts.
Captain what was your experience with the corrosion resistance of those strings? Please share with us. Are those comparable to Elixir Optiweb in terms of corrosion resistance?
