Dang! I usually disagree with Jules, but he’s 100% right here. He’s the only one grading this in a vacuum… Dutch and Dillon are comparing this to other VS’s and grading them in comparison… this absolutely undermines the credibility of the scoring system.
But y’all are drunk, so I’ll let it slide.

  • @onggia850

Aroma, flavor, balance, and complexity should be judged without the age, brand, or price that's why y'all have a separate category for all this. Usually I agree more with Dillion but Jules is right on the $$$ with this one.

Yeah I agree I was more with Jules here, it feels like "good entry-level" or "setting the bar" shouldn't necessarily warrant an 8 or an 18 in some categories. Although it all averaged out in the end anyway thanks to the panel format

I actually think comparing between price point (and age, etc) is a very valid way to review. Though it doesn't fit their system which has just a single category for value. But ironically, I don't think that sort of full focus on comparison would help the Hennessy VS as it's about the same price as VSOP from comparable brands. If you only drink $100+ XO cognac then maybe this would seem like a good value

I'm not talking about just Hennessy VS, but how each spirit is rated as a whole. If there's already a category for value and uniqueness then taste and complexity should not be influenced by value and uniqueness right? Personally I think E&J XO is just fine for occasional sipping and mixing. If I wanna treat myself then I prefer a bourbon, but that's just me.

Dillon, you had a rough day. If it's entry level, which there is no shame in that, you can't score it accordingly; that's value. Jules knows how the 'bar' works; if it sets the bar, it's not above the bar.

  • @greybeard3368

Very entertaining video. However, it seemed like Dillon was giving it a break since it’s an entry level Cognac. I think the drink’s level should be of no consideration (except in the value category) because this is supposed to be the Ultimate Spirits Competition.

Jules is on point. Dhillion, Im sorry to say you are making the rating system irrelevant and arbitrary. You cant say ‘flavor’ (etc) is 18 because its a cheap bottle and is not expected to be ‘this good. Now when you test the XO, even if you give it a pefect 20, 2 points difference seems like it is comparable, when it isn’t. Mark the spirits to their subjective value, leave pricing out of it until the end, or keep it to your value rating.

I'm curious to see you try the Martell/Courvoisier/Remy VSOPs. Particularly considering some of them are the same price as the Hennessy VS.
Based on what you said in the video sounds like you might be trying the VSs first? But if/when you do get to VSOP, I think a quick equal-price-point side-by-side taste test (e.g. revisit the Henny VS) would be excellent

I really like watching your reviews. You guys should try to get your hands on a bottle of El Caballito tequila. It's the number 1 extra anejo on tequila matchmaker and the number 2 anejo.

Hahahahahaha ! The lowest entry level Cognac in existence ! The love of street-winos in France and the darling bottle of American "Urbanites" from sea to shining sea ! Loaded with E150 and boise. You guys are so awesome for taking such a famous bottle and subjecting it to some real science. I love the ways you guys disected this total swill ! No matter the price point of the bottle you review, I know the discussion will be PRICELESS ! You guys are awesome !
By the way, when you try higher quality Cognacs you should really use a Tulip shaped tasting glass (similar to a Glencairn glass) But for this stinker a red Solo cup would still be too classy ! I think Hennessy VS should come in a can or a milk carton box. No need to waste perfectly good glass to bottle this stuff !

Hennessy, Martell, Courvoisier, and Remy Martin are for house wives that drink Mimosas and Rose' wine. Find a Cognac that is interesting.

Hitting basics like actually having distinct/pleasant notes, whether palate or aroma, is not an 8/10. That's literally an "excellent" score, consider that you are only 2 points off a perfect score and for what? A basic level of complexity that any decent drink should strive for? Jules is on the money and dillion needs to stop scoring bottles in relative terms to price range. This competition doesn't have price range categories thus using price as a reason to increase scores, outside of value, is fundamentally corrupt. #TeamJules, Keep up the great show guys.

If you never had a cognac, that one's gonna be so good. But XO tastes definitely much better than VS. Paradis is even better. Never had Richard Hennessy tho 😁 Basically from my experience the more expensive cognac is, the smoother it is and tastes less like alcohol. Difference between cognac, armagnac and any other brandy is in grapes ofc. It might still be extremely high quality, but just not from Cognac province and foreign to your taste buds. Tho without a question Cognac province knows how to make a great cognac.
PS. just a tip: if you wanna sound like a snob/pro, originally 'H' in Hennessy is silent 🙃

i mean if this is the Ultimate Spirits Competition it needs to stand on its own without considering its "levell". I mean are you handicapping it because its the best in its category?

  • @Vortex1988

    Cognac? 🤢🤮
Also, you guys need to revise your rating methodology. You can't just give something a high rating because its price is low. If this truly is an ultimate spirits competition, then you shouldn't be skewing your results based on price, with exception to maybe the value portion of your rating.

    • @cyama3661
      @cyama3661 2 роки тому +4

I agree with this. When you guys try premium liquors, you guys give high scores despite the lofty price. Now you are defending this score by commenting that its an entry level liquor. Can’t ignore expectations on premium version and then bringing in entry level as a defense for a high score. Long live Jules, the super taster of the panel.
