Considering how much good advice you've given me over the years, let me try to return the favor. I own an 89 Black Max 200 hp and it is without a doubt one of the greatest engines I've ever owned. Few things to keep in mind however. First off, never start without the leg in water or on water muffs,. The impeller can literally get chewed up in seconds when it's dry. Secondly, these beasts hate ethanol fuel. Run pure gas with no ethanol and you will have no problems whatsoever. Third, the oil injection system is a common failing on these as the drive gear is made of plastic and when they get older they eventually break. Either preemptively replace the oil pump, or better yet switch to premix 50 to 1 and you'll have no worries about oil. Pre-Ethanol outboards used rubber hose that desolve from the inside and leave deposits in the carbs, fuel pump and filters. To check pull off a fuel line and wipe the inside. If black deposits come off replace with new marine fuel lines. New USCG approved lines will have a white stripe running the length of the hose. Below deck fuel line is thicker wall and stiffer than above deck / outboard fuel line.
@@backwoods3214 That is a good thing. Two strokes polluted our pristine glacial fed lake. Two strokes should have been outlawed on lakes where pollution can ruin them.
@@twt000. Amen brother. I can remember when they outlawed 2 stroke lawn mowers then industrial interests got CONgress to rescind the ban. Two strokes are way past due to be outlawed. You can't buy a new two stroke boat motor anymore. Federal law finally killed them off. Now they need to put an age / rebuild limit on them. In the Keys they are seriously considering a ban. Acid rain went by by now two strokes need to be phased out. No more parts sales will do it.

@@OnusBones Do you think anything could deter Mustie 1 from the pursuit of a good deal? I suspect he'd walk 5 miles through a minefield in snowshoes in a quest of a free snowblower or rusted out Volkswagen.
Mustie, I got an old bass boat last year with a stuck steering system and I had to do the same thing that you did. I had to clean out the tilt tube with a shotgun brush and solve it. I had to go a step further and use some emery cloth to clean out the rust. But it works good as new now. Good luck with your new toy.
I had a neighbor who did car repairs on the side. He mounted an aftermarket inline fuel pump to a small board and attached several feet of hose to the inlet and outlet side. He had clips on the electrical connection. He used this to drain fuel tanks before he dropped them. It worked great. Put the inlet hose down the fuel filler and the outlet into a jerry can. Connect the wires to the battery and watch it drain the tank. Something like this would be a good addition to your shop considering how often deal with old and dirty fuel.
In a similar vein I like the little Harbor Freight "Battery Operated Fluid Transfer Pump" for about $10 at Harbor Freight (currently on sale it seems). It just makes such fuel transfer chores easier.
Mustie1 is an outstanding gentleman. I’ve bought, repaired, and then would restore bikes, dirt bikes, old racing Fourwheelers, and cars. Would get in trouble for how many items I had for sell in my empty lot by the city saying I needed a permit in my own lot. I would always include the original owners to show them and let them know that I would let them ride in it or see it once it was restored. The joy on those peoples faces were always my favorite. Loved it. With the prices of bikes, and junk cars going sky high I have to be very picky on them. In my area you see old junk and if you don’t jump on it right then and there someone else will. I would love to live in Musties area. I’ve been watching him since the beginning of his shows and glad to see he’s still doing it.
Thanks for sharing, I have a 1999 crestliner thats been sitting for 12 years and I'm starting this same journey tomorrow. You have given me some pointers as what to look for.

He’ll work through every single “tick” that thing has and it’ll perform as it should and run like new. What a beautiful boat! Thanks for taking us along, Whatta score! My largest bass was 9 pounds taken out of a lake in Massachusetts too! I was trying to teach my youngest at the time using her “Barbie” rod and reel lol. We were only supposed to be catching sunfish with a chunk of a night crawler but that’s how some of life’s greatest surprises show themself! I thought she had gotten hung up so I tried to help her but it pulled back. We/She fought that bass for a half an hour, showed up her two brothers and mom and dad that day😬 Great reminder for today, Happy Fathers Day guys and gals pulling double duty✌🏼❤️
Best line: "I wish machine's would realize, I'm just gonna keep escalating." Me too, Mustie 1, me too. As for the snow blowers, they're just waiting for someone to start loading them up. When you do, they come out, "Those are $400 each, and once you load them, you bought them."

When you said "I wish machines would just understand that I'm going to keep escalating things until something breaks or it gives. Might as well give up now"... I felt that in the core of my being, all my jury rigged, mickey mouse and BFH "repairs" over the years felt that too. Nicely done, Mustie!

Disable the oil injection asap. Black Max's had plastic gear drives for the injection pump, and they were not good. Other than that, bullet proof motors.
not so. I worked on these black max engines for years and replaces one fiber gear. make sure the alarm is working and carry extra 2 cycle oil on board.and add it to the tank in case the pump breaks.
I have the mariner version of this motor. Took the oil injection off and just mix the oil myself. HIGHLY RECOMMEND removing the oil injection system and just mix the oil. It is the number one cause of death for these engines if you don't. 50:1 Btw.
Mustie I never get tired of watching your video's. You amaze me how you figure things out. You're lucky you have the tools to get the job done. And if you don't have the tools, you improvise. Can't wait to see it run and hit the lakes. Thanks again for the video.

The done thing on all old 2 stroke Mercs is to take off the oil pump and run them on 50:1 premix! The pumps have proved to be unreliable. I believe that mercury even sell a blanking plate for the hole left in the block! Definitely worth looking into! Cheers from England!

This is really a cracking video but genuinely, what a lovely bloke you got it from. Please can you bring him on the occasional video? Even if it’s just a Christmas special! 👊
Looks like a fun project! I will say though, its never a good idea to run an outboard without water for the cooling intake. There is a rubber impeller that will get destroyed if it runs out of the water. The easiest way to run it in the shop is to use a pair of engine muffs - you can then connect a garden hose and supply water to the intake on the lower unit. I'm excited to check out the rest of these videos!
I had a similar story myself. I owned a Skeeter bass boat with a 150 Mercury which I had to let go due to my health. I was so sad to sell it. Now I just live my life thru these boat videos.
Awesome guy who is selling the boat he is letting it go to be used again for fellow fisherman.than it sitting up and going bad .nice boat looking forward to seeing it run
Just bought my girlfriend a 1993 f150 for $500. She always wanted a truck to rebuild. OH MY WORD did she get more to rebuild than she thought she would. But it runs and drives but doesn't stop... yet. We attacked it the mustie1 way of not buying anything right away and she ran so smoothly. I love your videos and insight when it's worth saving or scrapping.
I chuckled out loud myself. A couple of weeks back I was traveling thru NC and went to use the men's room at a convenience store. They still had the dispenser for "Male Hygenic Supplies" on the wall. I hadn't seen one of those in 20 years.
I loved your video on how you attacked going through the project cause I too got a boat that was unused for 10 yrs cause I wasn't quite sure where to begin but you took the guessing out for me. You should make more videos like this. Thanks it was one of the best videos I ve seen.
Hey man. NICE FIND! I have a word of advice on that Merc if I may. I have the same engine in Mariner flavor (everything is gray instead) on a 19 foot Procraft.. The oil system is a possible failure point which can cause the engine to run without oil. Mine has been removed and retrofitted to take premix gas only. Its a bit of a pain to fill, however the peace of mind is awesome. I use a 50:1 mix of high quality marine two stroke oil, with marine gas and a bit of Star Tron additive, and its good to go! I really love your videos man. Thanks a lot for all you do and share.
Two things, always wash a boat that’s been sitting head to tail before you begin work, it will reveal what you wouldn’t see otherwise. Two, always run the carbs dry when putting the boat up. Bonus info, fog the cylinders and turn the engine over with spark plugs out to knock out any moisture or debris. Also, the bar in the back was a transom saver, I highly recommend one!
Just a suggestion .. air compressor outdoors (with a mask) before pressure washing anything inside the cowling. Great video my friend. It's so much fun and rewarding to breathe a second life into a deserving resource. Thank you so much for the entertainment and the tips.
Thanks for the series. Bought a 94 pro craft and used a lot of your video to learn. Especially with the steering components. Mine wasn’t seized completely but would barely steer. Used your methods and now it steers with one finger! Thanks again!
The oil injection systems on those Mercury motors are prone to failure(plastic), and difficult to repair. Most folks in my area (Cape Cod) disable the injection system and pre-mix the fuel. I would also replace the oil tank with a smaller removable gas tank you can fill easily and winterize.
The Johnson/Evinrude systems were much worse. To the point where OMC recommended bypassing it to their customers. The Mercury setups are better. The only failures I have run into, are like mustie seen, the lines getting brittle and cracking. Either he needs to bypass the system, or replace every line. Either way will be fine for this one. I would have loved to find that score.
@@Bobbywolf64 It is not just the lines, the problem is the oil pump is driven off a plastic gear on the crankshaft. Any plastic gear this old is falling apart. Also, the plastic coupler that connects the oil pump to the oil pump drive shaft swells over the years untill it binds up in the hole in the block, which then wears and or strips out the previously mentioned plastic gear. I went through all this with my 1988 150 hp XR4 outboard. You either split the block to replace the gear, or go to premix.
21 seconds in: that little compound gave me a brilliant idea: For all these developments: instead of having everyone store their boat in their driveways, they should build one of these so everyone can put them there. 1 spot for each house. Then when you want to work on it or wash it, just roll down the block, snag it and off you go!
@@enjoy9772 That's awesome....I've driven through sub-divisions and it was like a freaking boat storage yard...every 3rd house had something in the driveway.
@@MostlyInteresting who said it was unmonitored? and who says it's secure in your driveway? People steal cars and boats and all sorts of things out of driveways. And don't give me this shit "I gotta camera" you can get their freaking licence plate and find out it was stolen so "catching them on camera" only proves to your insurance company it was actually stolen.
I had a similar situation as this and I had the same purchase of a boat that just sat around not being used. You have the same problem I had or will have and it is all about the big D! (Deterioration). Everything on that boat is dry rotted and waterlogged and you will be replacing everything under the sun from now to the day your stranded on a lake. I got so tired of breaking down and all I needed to do was REPLACE EVERYTHING. My hat goes off to you taking on a boat that has been in hibernation. I never felt comfortable boating in mine and that takes all the fun out of it.
I learned a long time ago that nothing stops mustie from rectifying something and either getting it running or performing the way it should. That’s why I love this channel because the enthusiasm is endless and the videos are amazingly informative. I’m looking forward to the next video mustie. 😉
My thoughts exactly the man walked you right through the whole process and the camera was where it needed to be for all of the perfect shots. I can't wait to finally get my new/old boat on the water . I will do all the preventive maintenance on my black max before I fire it up .
The impeller for the cooling water is an easy replacement. Spinning it dry, and the age. It's toast- or will leave you overheated sometime soon. You can find a replacement kit on e-bay for under 30 bucks. I agree to get rid of the oil injection and just premix. Maybe already done because of the old gas color.
right... and i'd be just as worried about the carbs from sitting that long. suicide to try to run it wide open without a thorough rebuild. only takes an hour. thats if it will even idle assuming the idle circuits arent gummed up. hopefully it wont idle well, forcing him to rebuild haha.
Seriously, when you see guys like this who start old boats from sitting for years without a set of water muffs hooked up, maybe you should watch them more often! Us "OLD PRO'S" per say been around awhile and we already know that the impeller is dry as a popcorn fart, its already junk and will need replacing! Running an engine without muffs will not harm it as long as you only run for a few seconds or so! Also, fresh gasoline will help loosen up all the shellac buildup in those float bowls! Yes, shellac! While all these concerns could be talking points to get a good deal, they are also good talking points for one to get ripped off by a dealer! LEARN YOUR HOBBY!
The owner did an excellent job in preserving the boat. It was well covered, not in Weeds and he remembered the history of it. He did an excellent job in preserving it with the resources that he wanted to allocate to it.
I feel sorry for Ken, you can tell he loved this boat and was genuinely sad to let it go. Also I hope he's in good health, his voice was rather hoarse. Made me concerned.
Having to clean out a few dirty holes so the tool i made is just a 1/4" stainless rod with a slot on the end. Put a strip of sand paper in the slot, then wrap it around the rod. Put the other end into an air grinder. High RPM of the grinder flings out the sandpaper so it is essentially a flap wheel with one flap. A few minutes of buzzing, some spray and some in-and-out motions with the rod and i am yet to see a hole that would not clean up.
I would get rid of that stainless steel prop if you're going to be running this in fresh/brackish water. While they perform better than aluminum, if you hit something in the water you'll damage the shaft/seals before the prop. The aluminum acts as a sort of weak link between the gearbox. Stainless steel is of course better and won't flex, but you learn the hard way about these things!
That's what your shear pin is for! It breaks before something like the prop or shaft does. A sacrificial part. Always check you have the correct one. Sometimes people like to replace the factory pin with something stronger and you know what happens?
If those people was throwing that out & you got those snow blowers and weedeater from the curb, wow 😲 that’s one heck of a find! Kudos to you 👏 , one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.
Brilliant, "force majeure" solution. While the tube was still in motor mount, I had thought of the air hammer/chisel on the rod end. But the brain waves sent were, alas, obstructed. That guy thrice replaced a trolling motor on a boat used a few weeks every 7 years? Maybe it was for steering...

It's a real good machine that has the power to get the job done. I got the confidence to get it running from watching you're channel and it would be full circle for me to see you get it running! Looking forward to seeing the Bass Boat on the water and fish in the live wells.
I said the same thing to myself when i seen all 3 grab the aries for sure 👍
Pre-Ethanol outboards used rubber hose that desolve from the inside and leave deposits in the carbs, fuel pump and filters. To check pull off a fuel line and wipe the inside. If black deposits come off replace with new marine fuel lines. New USCG approved lines will have a white stripe running the length of the hose. Below deck fuel line is thicker wall and stiffer than above deck / outboard fuel line.
Or just use PTFE hose.
Oh the days of all metal fuel lines.....

You have to respect a man that knows it's better to let go of something when he can no longer take care of it, over keeping it and letting it rot in the ground. Does seem like he took good care of it. Edit I'm sure I mentioned it before, when it comes to cleaners, I am a big fan of a product called super clean degreaser but it also does more than normal degreasers, I do not know if it is available in the USA but i would imagine so.

@Buck Fiden Exactly.
I have the mariner version of this motor. Took the oil injection off and just mix the oil myself. HIGHLY RECOMMEND removing the oil injection system and just mix the oil. It is the number one cause of death for these engines if you don't. 50:1 Btw.
Use premix gas and throw the oil injection away.

Hey man.
At the end those snowblowers snapped to attention when Mustie approached like dogs in the window.
YES SIR 100%, DISABLE THE OIL INJECTION & JUST PRE-MIX YOUR FUEL.
Waited all week for this. Coffee time 👍
Its beer o'clock here, cheers!
21 seconds in: that little compound gave me a brilliant idea: For all these developments: instead of having everyone store their boat in their driveways, they should build one of these so everyone can put them there. 1 spot for each house.
Then when you want to work on it or wash it, just roll down the block, snag it and off you go!
So the thieves will have a easy go at them in a remote un-monitored parking lot. No thanks...
Lots of places in Florida have those for that very reason.

Well nobody ask you sooooo….
That's what your shear pin is for! It breaks before something like the prop or shaft does. A sacrificial part. Always check you have the correct one. Sometimes people like to replace the factory pin with something stronger and you know what happens?
I know that this doesn't have anything to do with this video, but I was just curious. I appreciate your time and all the help you give. God bless you.

I was thinking drilling a couple of holes for grease zerks in the steering / motor pivot shaft.
