  • Michel Petrucciani came from an Italo-French family with a musical background. Michel was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, which is a genetic disease that causes brittle bones and in his case short stature.
At an early age he became an enthusiast of Duke Ellington and wished to become a pianist like him. Although he trained for years as a classical pianist, jazz remained his main interest. He gave his first professional concert at the age of 13. At this point of his life he was still quite fragile and had to be carried to and from the piano. His size meant that he required aids to reach the piano's pedals, but his hands were average in length.
By the age of 18 he was part of a successful trio. He moved to the US in 1982, where he successfully encouraged Charles Lloyd to resume playing actively.
In 1986 Petrucciani recorded a live album with Wayne Shorter and Jim Hall. He also played with diverse figures in the US jazz scene including Dizzy Gillespie.
In 1994 he was granted a Légion d'honneur in Paris.
His own style was initially influenced by Bill Evans although some compare him to Keith Jarrett. He is often deemed to be among the best jazz pianists.
Michel Petrucciani died just after his 36th birthday from a pulmonary infection. He was interred in Le Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.

it's about time! More people need to know about the remarkable life and music of Michel Petrucciani. He was absolutely brilliant! I thank God that I was able to witness his brilliance at the Blue Note in NYC along with Eddie Gomez and Al Foster. It was a memorable performance and an honor to be there, only a few feet away from the trio playing live.

The pain must've been beyond our ken. Such brilliance and courage. I hope he's in the part of paradise where all the notes are perfect and love is never lost.

I saw Michel Petrucciani 3 times, twice in London, and once in San Sebastian, and every time, it was absolutely inspirational. In fact, I put the song "Estate" (one of his favourite songs) on my new album, as a tribute

Michel remains one of my favorite pianists. My other favorites: Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Erroll Gardner, and Earl "Fatha" Hines.

Thanks for this post of the Michel Petrucciani documentary. As one who followed his music from the Big Sur days to the end, it is great to see at least some glimpse into this small guy with such a huge talent.

Excelente documental de este gran genio del jazz que es Michel Petrucciani. No solamente su genialidad musical, sino ademas con una vision intuitiva muy profunda de la musica, un excelente comunicador, lleno de modestia, y un sentido del humor exquisito.

@tororoso10 The song that starts the film is the jazz theme "Caravan", first performed in 1937 by Duke Elington. Petrucciani recorded his version on his album "Promenade with Duke".

that's a lesson to be learned. for 30 seconds in the beginning of the tune he played only right hand, single note phrases, and you knew exactly what he did, where he was, and it sounded like full instrument speaking, not just part of it.

7:45 je souffre tout le temps... Quel homme extraordinaire, si fragile et si fort à la fois. C. Rampling parle du public (nous) avec suffisance mais c'est pas grave. D'ailleurs, elle n'a pas grand chose d'intéressant à dire.
