The "A" Train rendition @ 3:35 is absolutely monumental...Michel will live in our hearts as a musical genius for all time....
It's almost as if he knew that his time on earth would be short so he packed a lifetime's worth of music into what little time he had. And he did it EXTREMELY well.
Michel petrucciani is such an amazing and brilliant musician. His alchemy of cord, key, Melody, and rhythm are continuously ethereal. Each time I hear him play, I hear something new and fresh.
This is great to see, what a wonderful musician and person Michel was.
Waooo this interview is one of the sweetest of Michel I miss you brother
damn the 90 ies . what a great time ! Musicaly, Petrucciani was a gift from heaven . awsome energie and a intensity, which is very scarce around pianists today.
I saw him with chic corea in London amazing talent brilliant intetview
02:28 "Jazz is, for me, the classical music of tomorrow."
25:41 I aspire to embody the music of Michel Petrucciani.
I have that live album of Petrucciani's; I was just getting to know him in around 2000. I happened to hear his version of Besame Mucho, which was played at the concert as well. I got lucky and was listening to a jazz station and was recording onto tape when played over the radio. Played the tune to death; didn't know what the song was until several years later and got the whole album. One of my favourites.
He was blessed with energy! That was his main strength that translated into fine skills
This musical period is the best of Michel (theatre des Champs Elysées the greatest album I’ve ever heard in solo piano !). I m listening this musical genius every day since ten years now… and it is still magic and new every time. Thanks Michel
Fantastic. This is fantastic. Just fantastic. Thank you for sharing this!
Мишель, довел до слез!!!
What a pure talent and man
Шедевральная импровизация! Гениально!
When he started playing A Train and I saw that womans reaction 💯🙈 what a moment
Incredible and he just nonchalantly explains it like it was nothing haha. Having physical disabilities or differences as he refers to it just makes it even more incredible
I've been a follower a long time. And the interviewer is so dignified, intelligent and not in the way. Thanks. Dave Naples, Fl
My favourite Jazz piano player
Having a beautiful woman compliment and flirt with him repeatedly must have been a massive confidence boost for him
Thank you for uploading this fantastic interview!
He was blessed with immense patience. I only see a Titan, but the world gave him no quarry, he never judged a soul.
Nah bro. He wasnt blessed with it. He worked for it
I got to see him on a few occasions in the 80s and 90s in San Francisco, Oakland and Saratoga CA. He was such an amazing talent and cool dude. I didn't know he was responsible for bringing Charles Lloyd out of retirement. That's monumental.
RESPECT!
Grande Uomo e Musicista
MP❤ whan an artist he was!
It is such a pity Michel died 3 years after this interview. Let's play his music and compositions forever like Estate, Looking Up, etc.
Genious❤❤❤
She was flirting actually wow
What a blessed man.
JEHOVAH gives gifts to all. Bless you Father JEHOVAH.
Wholesome easy-going interview.
13:58 Looking Up.
Anna Ford working for MSNBC News, I never knew that.
Hi fluidjazz, This is actually the presenter Selina Scott who worked on news programmes at the same time as Anna Ford. Cheers
@@chambersofhourrors9393 aaah yes, I was sure I knew her, now you confirm her name that makes sense. Thanks
What song was at 22:03
Hi RazzerRaw, In the interview he talks about mashing-up classical music with jazz improvisation. Having Shazamed the exert it comes up with a Chopin Nocturne Op. 55 No. 2 and there are similarities to the theme but it's definitely Michel's take on it! Cheers
@@chambersofhourrors9393 Awesome pickup! I’ve been studying classical for years and the Chopin Melody didn’t cross my ear once, he’s truly remarkable at improvising. Do any other pieces like this come to mind ? I’ve been loving this ballad style. I’ve heard many of his Including his Besame Mucho, Flamingo, Hidden Joy, Night Sun in Blois, Would love to find more pieces with this style :)
@@razzerraw1108 Sorry RazzerRaw I'm a non-musician so can't really help you. I saw Michel perform a twice about this time and he was a wonderful, charismatic performer. Cheers
This song is called "Lush Life" by Billy Strayhorn. I too love Michel Petrucciani's rendition! He often plays this song alone or in a medley. I also recommend Phineas Newborn Jr.'s version.
It is his from an album he made at about that time. I saw him at Sunrise Records in Fort Lauderdale in 1986. It was a small room and he was there for a benefit for another musician. Joe Sample was there and it was magic. Funny, but I can't remember if Red Rodney was there or if it was Ira Sullivan. Too many years ago. The place was packed and he came in on another musician's shoulder.
Don’t forget the other greatest jazz pianist, Keith Jarrett.
We associate Take the "A" Train with Ellington, but Strayhorn wrote it.
