  • Before adopting a Shih Tzu dog, you must have done some research depending on your family’s living style and place. In case you are searching for a small pup to make up for the space in your home, the name ‘Shih Tzu’ must have popped up on your screen. This dog is considered to be among the expensive dog breeds. But what you must be concerned about is how adaptable the dog is with families.

I have had six over 26 years. They are the best dogs!!! They are not difficult. You just have to understand them. They are very humanlike. You cannot yell at them and never break their heart. Learn to groom them yourself and start early. They are fun and the sweetest dogs. Ten minute walks three times a day for adults. They don’t do heat well. And one of mine ( I now have 2) is cold natured. But all of mine have lived 14-15 years. My dogs have never been aggressive ever.

Hi. How are you. Yes, I agree. They are humanize alright. I have had 3 Shih Tzu's over the years & would do it all over again. They're the absolute best ever. I miss them a lot. What I've found is that having pets actually changes you to into a better human being. I definitely encourage anyone to get a dog, Shih Tzu's for me of course, & 😮certainly adopt & clear the shelters. Save a furbabys life. Thanks.

I’m a shih Tzu owner and they are not as difficult as described here. As any other breed they have there own needs. Small breed with small stomach. Healthy food and healthy snacks are best, my dog doesn’t shed,. To help with the anxiety, we got a second dog. They keep each other company. They are indoor dogs. Keep grooming and vet visits. My dog loves children and loves playing. They sleep with us and we’re trained for daily routines with consistency and they act independently with their daily routine. As long as you keep in mind that they require care just like any other living thing, they will be with you from 15 to 17 years.

I miss her every day, she was with me all the time. They are the best I'm looking for another one. Just can't find one like her yet. Never had a problem with her was clean and asked out even in the middle of the night.

@@drte55 we lost our Louie after 15 years. He was a rescue that got to us at 1 yr old. It took us a while to find another blondie like Louie but we finally found Frankie. Got him at 4 months old and with training and consistency he was trained by six months old. We got him a brother, four months old Maltese/ Shih Tzu mix and he’s on training now . They are a loyal breed, lovable and extremely smart. I become a little defensive when I see posts like this. Just like any other breed, you need to care and be diligent of their needs. I hope you can find another baby soon.

My full breed Shihtzu is a diabetic medical alert service dog. He is 16. He doesn't have a stubborn bone in his body. He is a pleaser. My dog doesn't bark ,only when I tell him to. I taught myself to groom and trim my dog. My dog is the most adaptable dog I ever had. Yes I brush my dog everyday and we both enjoy it. Its called training. This video is wrong! Best dog I ever had.

I have had 2 Shih Tzu's in the past and they are ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL DOGS. When I had to make the decision it was time for their best to have them go to
" Doggie Heaven ", was like loosing one of your children.
I am 76 and bought my 3rd one from a wonderful breeder 13 months ago. I picked her up when she was 10 weeks old.
During the 2 1/2 hr drive bringing her to her new home there was a bond starting. They are a tremendous person companion dog. You need to know the traits of the breed, and they are not difficult.
I am planning to get another Shih Tzu baby in the near future, so my Dasie has dog companion. This will give me double the love ❤️ from these wonderful fur babies.
My opinion is, Shih Tzu is one of the best small dogs you can have for a " SMART LOVING COMPANION ".
I don't agree with this negative video at all, you just need to learn and understand their traits.
If you don't want to learn about the ways to understand any dog breed, " then you should not own a dog ".

Had two shih tzus and did not have ANY major problems with them. One lived to be 18; the other 14. They ate anything, loved to walk, were never overweight, never anxious ( well one hated thunder), loved to exercise, played with toys well, were obedient, did not bark excessively. They did require grooming, but they were wonderful pets.

Several of the reasons listed here are common in most dogs (some humans too), not just shih tzus. But I would rather have a shih tzu that have hair which I have to comb, than a dog that has fur which sheds everywhere, everyday. It's really a matter of personal preference. It's better to pick a dog you have a connection with than just nitpick at the traits. Cause dogs can adapt and change to meet the lifestyle and love of their human. :)

My shih tzu Christopher at about 3 years old saved my life. I had built a patio that day and took an extra arthritis pill to get me through because I always like to finish things. I went to the restroom around 10 30 before going to bed, I got up and passed out on the tile floor in a puddle of blood it looked like a crime scene. He was licking me in the face to wake me up! I had to crawl to the phone for 911. We just took off in the ambulance and the guy told the driver you better pull over I can't get a pulse! I was in ICU for a week getting 12 blood transfusions. My mom and her friend came up and said I was blue and didn't think I would make it. I've had about 8 shih tzus and on my last one I think. She's 18 blind and deaf and still sniffs for me. I love all animals like Betty White, and Doris Day. They give you life. Stay healthy and God Bless

We have had multiple Shih Tzu’s, our most recent passed right before her 16th birthday. They were all well mannered and trained. Never had any issues and most on this video were very generic that applies to most dog breeds. This video needs to learn more about Shih Tzu’s. Like with any breed, they just need the right kind of love, understanding, patience and care. They have such great personalities, super smart, truly are part of the family and fill your hearts so much! 🫶🫶

Love seeing all the comments. We have a shih tzu as well and have had others before. They really are the best dogs. I find them to be really smart and easy to train and not very big barkers at all. They do have smaller bladders so should be pad trained as well if you need to leave them alone for longer periods. My girl now will let me know she needs to go out if I haven’t brought her out before she needed to go. They def require more grooming but are happy with just playing ball in the house for exercise.

You have no idea how wonderful they are . I've had several different breeds of dogs including 3 pit bulls . Every doggie is wonderful as long as you love them and care for them, we as humans will never love so unconditionally as a doggie will . We can learn a lot from these precious creatures all of them

I absolutely love my Tzu. She is adorable, smart, and a great companion..She loves everyone. My husband did not care for dogs. We have had several dogs and he never showed any kind of love....until he met SusieQ. After a few licks when she was a puppy dugged at his heart. SusieQ shares her love between my husband and me. When he is laying down on the soda or bed, she wants up and when she is up on the bed or sofa, she goes over and kisses him. This man is too negative. The only time i see hair...not fur...is when i groom her. She does not shead. Like all young dogs, up to 2 years old, they want to play and run. She is now 5 years old and if you are sitting in a chair, she wants to get up and be with you. She IS a lap dog. Some do put on weight but that is because they lay around or be in your lap. When she passes, I will by another Shih Tzus. My daughter has a Tzu as well and has the same traits.

I never had a shih tzu but I'm seriously thinking about getting one. I love shelties and I have had them throughout my life. I lost my sweet Harley two months ago and I'm thinking that I might get a shih tzu this time. I read that shih tzus can be a one person dog but from anyone who I know that's had them says otherwise. I just don't want a nippy dog because I have grandkids and my husband and I like to take our fur kids on trips. I'm guessing if they are well socialized, they do well?
I came up to a horrific accident once years ago. I had to park my car in a lady's driveway because my road was blocked. She welcomed me to sit on her front porch with her and her little shih tzu cuddled up in my lap and calmed me down. He was the absolute sweetest little dog I ever met. His mom told him not to bother me and he gave her the cutest "I'm taking care of my new friend!" look. 😄

I have a shih tzus puppy who is now 6mths old. He is the light of my life and I am number 1 in his. We bonded quickly after I brought him home at 8 weeks old. He does have anxiety when I go out because my husband tells me so. We have a nice crate that is a piece of furniture and he has room and a soft bed. That is his safe place and he willingly goes in when we go out and have to leave him behind. What a reunion when we get home. We limit our time out...and the longest we have left him is 3.5 hours. He is the sweetest and funniest boy and I am so grateful to have him....we have had a maltese and a bichon poo and loved them just as much...We got our Noah who was (a mixed breed of maltese and shih tzu) just four days after the death of our bichon on July 28th. There nothing like the love of a dog and if you bring them up right the breed is loving, playful, and faithful.

I have 2 shih tzu and they have their own personality. Kash is more vocal when he don't know you and will back up from you if he don't like what he smell on you. While Zeus will give you more of a chance and will welcome you then he will either except you or move away from you. They both love meeting people but have different ways of doing it. Kids and older people is what they really love. I'm a truck driver and them going to the potty never been a problem. They was not hard to train and they don't like pooping where they eat, play or sleep. They love hugs and kisses. One more then the other. Having a back yard to run in make their day. Even if I don't have a back yard, I would bring them to a ball park and let them run and enjoy their life. I really wish I had a back yard because they deserve one. I see so much joy in them when they can just run free with no worries. My love for them and their love for me is unconditional love that you will never get from any human!!!❤❤❤. Some people don't understand the bond that we have and they never will. I love my babies.. The person whom made that video is sadly inform. Shih Tzu are the best babies you can ever have. They show you love every time they see you..❤❤

I call my shitzu stupid smart, most of the time it seems like she doesn't have a clue but every once in a while she does something so smart it blows my mind. Shitzus don't respond well to the typical type of dog training techniques, they were bred to be companions, lap dogs, they're only purpose in life is to make their owners happy when they sense they aren't doing that they start acting out doing stupid stuff, they need alot of attention and constant positive reinforcement, my dog's 15 and I have to tell her good girl and make a big deal every time she takes a pee outside or else she'll start peeing in the house.

My baby isn’t like this at all nor was my grand pup like this at all. I don’t listen to what ppl say about dogs because it’s all about the owner & how that dog is raised. Yes they have attitudes, they are verbal, they do suffere from separation of the owner but they are loving, fun, friendly. My baby gets alone well with other dogs especially the one that they grew up with. Thank God my baby is 9 & has had no health issues & im thankful for that. My grand pup lived to be 19 though she was blind & deaf in one ear. I miss her so much. My Prynceton is checked at the doctor often & he eats good. I watch his weight & I haven’t had any issues with him eating because he does eat the best. They are great dogs so to each its own! He was not potty trained very well from his previous owner, but I managed to get him trained. He's very good about going potty outside. You have to show these dogs that they are loved and part of the family. I take him to a groomer every 6 weeks, so his coat is never too long and she trims around his eyes. He's a wonderful pet. Loves kids and all people. So gentle!

*I owned a male Shih Tzu for thirteen years (he had to be put down a few years ago because of his mounting chronic health problems). I don't know why people are dunking on this guy, he's right on the dot when pointing out the issues of the breed. Shih Tzu's are very high maintenance dogs. Expect to drop a lot of money on grooming and visits to the vet.*
*My Shih Tzu's left eye literally exploded (I'm not even joking) when he was about six-years-old because for years he would rub his whole face (including his eyes) into the carpet. The result of putting all that pressure on his eye weakened it to the point where the eye jelly and other fluids burst through eye wall. His left eye had to be surgically removed.*
*Later, I discovered the reason why he was rubbing his face into the carpet all the time. Shih Tzu's, like all short muzzle breeds, are constantly discharging fluid from their tear ducts. My dog's face was more or less constantly wet, and so his face developed a chronic skin infection. To treat it, the vet had to shave off all the the fur on his face. It was bad. His entire face underneath his eyes and across the bridge of his muzzle was red and swollen (for those of you who don't know, Shih Tzu are like bulldogs and pugs with long fur: their faces are covered in deep skin folds which are perfect for bacteria to grow in if they are constantly wet as my dog's were).*
*The vet was able to treat the infection with steroids and antibiotics. To keep this from happening again, I had the vet surgically remove the skin folds on my Shih Tzu's face, and also had him tighten his eyelid so that his remaining eye wouldn't bulge out so far from his face. This solved the bacteria problem, the wet face problem, and the face rubbing problem all in one stroke.*
*One thing I'd like to add that this video does not mention is that Shih Tzu's do not like other dogs. They're like that jealous girlfriend who doesn't want you hanging out with your friends. Shih Tzu want their human(s) all to themselves. They do not want to cohabitate with other dogs, they do not want to share your attention and affection with other dogs.*
*Having said all of that, Waggleton P. Tallylicker was still the best dog I have ever had, hands down. I would not trade all the good memories we had together for anything, least of all the money I spent on him.*
PS: Waggleton P. Tallylicker was not his real name, but I'm not going to dox my dog on the internet. I respect his privacy, even in death.

Shih Tzu is pronounced: "Sheed Zoo"
Shih Tzu is also singular and plural, so you don't need to say "Shih Tzu's."
Also, it is a lot easier to train a Shih Tzu puppy than it is to train one that's past puppyhood.
My Shih Tzu lived to be 19, and she was loved by everyone that met her. She was never aggressive, and she didn't shed if I brushed her every day, which I loved brushing her because made our bond stronger. I also brushed her teeth at that time, too. Unfortunately, she passed on March 24, 2024, when I woke her up to hold her, and she started seizing. She had 2 different seizures back to back, and then she was gone. She had never had a seizure before. I wish I never woke her up. I feel like she'd still be with me.😭💔 I had a good 19 years with her though and I'd do it all over again with her if I could. RIP Skittles... we all love you! ❤

    My Shih Tzu":
    1. Nope
2 Nope, but first dog with a reverse sneeze. Trachea gets irritated.
3.Not sure, got him at 3 months.
4.He was trained that he ate what was given to him. Just leave it in the bowl. When they're hungry enough, they'll eat.
5.They are strong willed and stubborn at times, but sweetly so. This can be overcome. Good treats help training.
    6. True if you don't have them cut short. But easy to do. Takes 5 minutes.
    7. True. Use artificial tear drops. Use during grooming before bedtime.
    8. True, but my boy lets me know when he's too hot. Finds a shady spot, flattens his belly out, and moves to a cool spot. I wait until he's ready to go.
    9.Not at all. But he's a barker.
    10. Yes, but he is not anxious. I've met some that are.
    11. They shed like humans. You don't see the hair. Brushing every day helps. And get a Roomba.
    12. They do need daily walks. Ours would run laps around the sectional at night if he did not get enough exercise.

I adore Shih Tzus. I raised some… and it’s true, some have separation anxiety, so those sweet babies are better for stay at home folks or take them with you. If they have companions they’ll be better. My sweeties were very sweet, friendly, & happy. Train them to be calm & quiet. I had trouble with potty training my doggies. They must be brushed & groomed regularly. Yes, keep them in the a/c if possible… with a doggie door so they can go potty or just go outside in their yard.

4 shih tzu’s over 35 years and I don’t agree with anything you say in this video. All my babies have been healthy and well behaved from day one. My oldest lived for 14 years. I have a 4 year old now and picking up another in 2 weeks when she is 8 weeks old. All well trained/ behaved and I can take them anywhere without concern they will misbehave. Of course they need grooming just as you need to wash your face and brush your hair. You make them sound like a nightmare to own and it the total opposite. They are loving, loyal companions and great family pets.

They are very adaptable to a persons lifestyle!! They can be a little difficult with toilet training, but they do want to please yheir person. My szu right now is reveling in being an only dog, they love their owners and want to be with them, and may not want to share their owner. My guy always knows where i am in the house. I believe they are the best dogs ever!!! Dont hesitate to adopt them. I got my boy at age 10, and he has adapted beautifully!! He is 14 now, and i love him ao much!! Such wonderful dogs!!!

Lol... Yeah, whoever thinks Shih Tzus are a problem, either poorly raised them to be bad, or they bought one from a bad breeder. I've been breeding Teacup sized Shih Tzus for 8 years and regular sized ones the 10 years before that, and the only things i ever hear are how amazing my puppies are, and i know I'm not the only breeder who gets these positive comments. I love the fact that i still get the lovable healthy and wonderful personality of a normal sized Shih Tzu but now in a 3 to 4 lb fur ball. Best dogs in the world!

I don't agree to never have shihtzu coz I do have a shihtzu name her Cera she is with me for 13 yrs she is sweet good girl she is well train since puppy she do pee & poop on pee pad of her own she sleep with me too when we go for work she just wait for us she is not hard to be taken care of. As long you socialized, play, bond with them it's not hard to have a shihtzu. Any dog are all the same
if you don't have time and be a responsible furrent then your causing them to be temperamental and bad behavior. That's why everyone must be a responsible owner or furrent. It's not the dog or breed that is a problem it's the owner itself if they don't know how to take care and responsible enough and don't have financial capacity don't get a dog for all dogs are a lifetime commitment.
