Great Vid Baldie, keep it up Have been Contemplating playing this to fill the Atlus sized gap left from my recent completion of Persona 3 Reload & your video has convinced me to make a purchase
I love Soul Hackers 2, but that is, in part, due to the director. I adore Mitsuru Hirata's other works, including Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Radiant Historia. He also was involved on Strange Journey. Most of the games hes involved with almost always have really strong character interactiond as one of the main selling points, even if overall stories are kinda mixed.
Oh! I didn't know of that connection! LOVED Tokyo Mirage Sessions. It and Soul Hackers 2 are the only games of his I have played, and I enjoyed them both immensely. I do hope that Sould Hackers 2 gets a bit of a redemption arc like TMS did. My understanding (and please correct me if I'm wrong) is that TMS was panned upon release for what it wasn't rather than what it was; but these days it seems to have undergone a critical re-evaluation. Would play a TMS sequel in a heartbeat.
Good video, I definitely cant help but to the feel the dungeons and core combat system felt weak and lacking but the characters, atmosphere and story have made me keep playing.
I bought the game yesterday and to me it looked cool especially Ringo s design but I was a bit worried with everyone saying it was a bad game. After seeing this video I can't say my worries have been put to rest entirely but I can tell that he speaks from the heart about this game and that helps me be less worried so thanks
You know, the complaints about the dungeons reminded me of the Chrysler Building in Parasite Eve 1. It is a question that interests me, because those long segments of grinding and the same tune over and over again certainly didn't raise red flags for most players back in 1998.
I remember it well (and still hope for a PE remake one day!). Something that interests/depresses me nowadays is how often I meet someone who wasn’t alive in 1998 😂
I enjoyed Soul Hackers 2. I think my opinions kind of align with yours. I get the criticisms, but they don't bother me. In terms of a 'third franchise', where this missed, I think Metaphor hit, and I'd be very surprised if there's not a sequel at least announced some time in the next five or so years. I'd say about 12-18 months after Persona 6 finally lands. But would I buy and play a theoretical Soul Hackers 3? Definitely. I do have a bit of a theory that have no information to back up whatsoever. I think Atlus may have potentially used Soul Hackers 2 to help train up stuff to work on Persona 6. I have heard that the guy that used to run P-Studio moved to the newly created Studio Zero and took a lot of his creative partners with him. So Soul Hackers 2; it's in the SMT franchise, it's got an itteration of the trusty press-turn system, Demon Fusion. It is definitely 'light touch' Persona. But they made the length match. I actually love that it was shorter, and honestly, I think that is the 'third pillar' Atlus actually needs. Not Soul Hackers specifically, but a game where they can go through their back catalogue, go "Yeah. A sequel to that." and make a 40 to 50 hour game. So the next 'short' game couuld be another Devil Summoner game (I know Soul Hackers spun out from this), another Etrian Odyssey, another Tokyo Mirage Sessions (YES PLEASE!), or hell... maybe something that isn't a sequel at all and is just genuinely new IP. While I do love me a good, long, turn-based JRPG, having one where I can get it all done in maybe a month of weekends? That would be great. A pallatte cleanser. Because while Soul Hackers 2 used a lot of elements I was familiar with, the quasi-cyberpunk setting helped set it apart. So in closing, sure. Give me a new Persona game. Give me another Metaphor. Let's pencil in another mainline SMT game for when I have another 100+ hours to spare. But inbetween those, give me something where it will only take me 50 hours, even if I'm taking my time. Use those games to try out things that can potentially be refined for those pillar games. Or jettisoned entirely, leaving that game as a curiosity.
Also I thought I'd say something incase you weren't aware, there's another youtuber that makes content on the same kind of games as you named Backlog Battle. You're name is very close to it and Ive gotten mixed up a few times now especially when your video is just 2 down from theirs 😅
I remember reading about the original Soul Hackers on The GIA back when I was first on the internet in the dial up days (god, I'm old!) and it sounded like the most interesting and intriguing game among JRPGs that never made it to the west. Somehow despite this I've never player SH2 and I don't really know why. I've played a lot of the Shin Megami Tensei series and spin offs and have spent and absurd amount of time crossbreeding demons but I think they only ones I've ever finished are Digital Devil Saga (the first one) and possibly Persona 3. I like them and I think Persona 5 is insanely stylish but I always fall off before the end. With Persona 5 in particular after about 2 mind palaces and an insane amount of demon building I thought I had more than my moneys worth and just stopped.
With all your smt experience it sounds like SH2 might not hold your interest tbh. As a fellow dial-up survivor I prefer to think of our age group as seasoned rather than old 😂
I agree, kind of. I'm playing the game right now, but I feel like you fail to address how badly designed the dungeons are, especially the Soul Matrix. Requiring 16 floors of that with no changes in music or background AT ALL feels like a waste of time. I actually like doing it, though, after work, when I'm in the mood for a lighter game.
I think one of the main things that turned alot of people off, myself included was them calling it soul hackers 2 and it really did not feel like a sequel at all with the change in art style and it being personified. and paying full price for a game with mixed reviews in the 70's was too steep of an asking price. Having recently played it when it was on a sale i can say i enjoyed my time with it and its not as bad as alot of people made it out to be. I had some gripes with the game but like with alot of jrpgs, if the story is good i can overlook the shortcomings and i appreciated the more adult take on the story both in overall narrative and character interactions vs teenage angst must save the world that was in p5 basically lol.
Unfortunately I already know it isn’t. Ringo deserved a better game. They should just make her a dlc character for each Persona/SMT release now. Because i’m not trying to play Soul Hackers 2 at all.
At first i was excited to buy this game cause i'm a big fan of megaten series. But after watching gameplay video on youtube and review i decided to skip this one. Character design is good since it's Miwa shiro but the gameplay feel like a reskin of persona. Bit the biggest drawback is that there is no new or unique demon in this game. Not to mention some demon and satan is paid DLC (if it's SMT apocalypse satan i don't really mind but it was regular megaten satan).
Great Vid Baldie, keep it up

Well this is the year to have an atlus sized gap given they're released 4 games this year 😅
😅😮

The characters are a definite high point 👍

Thats fair
The dungeons in persona are crap too.
@@Dabberz1 we're talking about soul hackers here? I actually love the dungeons in Persona unless you're talking about the literal first game
Damn, I'm so fed up with Persona 5 and people asking for more of it that I didn't even finish the video
Yea idk persona 5 is cool but basing every game they make off it is wild im leaving the vid 10 seconds in too 🫡 lol

I love that you truly revew it. Il get it thank you! Would love if you review more anime games!
just got this cuz it was on sale and looked for reviews, glad to report youve hyped this up for me
Hope you enjoy it!

I have been made aware 😂 tho sadly I haven’t yet found the time to watch their work 🙈
It’s on sale so I’m curious if it’s good to play or not. I like persona 5 so hopefully it gives off the same vibe.
I really enjoyed it. If it’s on sale it’s an easy recommend

Your last sentence is a big part of why I loved it so much.

One of the worst rpgs I’ve played in the last 5-10 years. Just boring as hell
