The Pixies are frequently posited as the immediate forebear of the alternative rock boom of the 1990s, though they disbanded before reaping any of the benefits this might have brought them.Avowed fan Kurt Cobain's acknowledgement of the debt Nirvana owed to the Pixies, along with similar tributes by other alternative bands, ensured that the Pixies' legacy and influence grew substantially in the years following their demise.
For those of you calling this a "Teen Spirit" rip off, you should know that "Teen Spirit" almost wasn't released because Nirvana was worried that it sounded too much like the Pixies.
Yep. Kurt was influenced a lot by the pixies.
I don't really think it sounds that much like Teen Spirit personally.
It sounds way different to me.
well yeah they were a huge influence to many bands
Trompe le Monde released 1 day before Nevermind :)
who needs school when you can just listen to the pixies because ITS EDUCATIONAL
Kelsea Hopkins AMEN
devolutional
It's indoctrination nowadays
Soundtrack to my youth, and now my 17 year old son listens to them too!! Good music never dies.
Probably one of the greatest bands of all time.
I can't describe how much love I have.
Nirvana and Pixies are both awesome.
End of discussion.
The Pixies are the most mainstream underground band of all time
It's EDUCATIONAL
You just explained perfectly what I was trying to think of about them haha
But if you remember listening to the radio and the late 1980s and early 1990s like I do (class of '91)... songs on commercial FM radio did not sound like this then
“Once you go Frank Black, you never go back.” - Kurt Cobain
One of the most influential bands ever, on par with the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground, Stooges, MC5 and the Kinks....
On par with the beatles ? Put the crack pipe down...I love n hold pixies in highest regards, but any muse would tell you .. there's bands.... then there's the beatles
@@paulwilliams2663 hey hey hey don’t misunderstand me there. It is you who should need to hit the rocks a bit less. I am the biggest Beatles fan this side of the Atlantic. After buying every single record they issued from when I was 9 in 1977, I started collecting their bootlegs,, from 1979, when you were presumably still in your father’s gonads. Best band ever, several spans above even the best. So we’re on the same page there. I didn’t say “better than....”. I said “as influential as....”. There is a difference there. Syntactically and meaningfully. And you cannot deny The Pixies have been, in different parameters, just as influential as our beloved Scousers. Just one word: Nirvana. But not to worry, an easy mistake to make when one is reading comments fast and as an afterthought, and not pondering about them. I made the same mistake myself, countless times. Viva The mighty Beatles! Not only they change the world musically, but socially and spiritually too!
This song never gets old.
It's educational!
I saw them in Vegas in 2014 I can honestly say it was the best show ever!!! I hope they do another tour.
That bass line miss Deal.... it's almost unbelievable, even after all these years 😲😲
It would absolutely no sense how anyone cannot get addicted to this song.
So funny the way Frank sings the fifth and last line of U mass : " It's.... ed .... uuuuuu ....caaaa ..... tion ..... alllllllll '.
Like ms maggiezolin
If ya ever been to the University of Massachusetts on a weekend…you see how educational it is….lmao.
2:45 to the end is so fucking sick, Joey Santiago is such an underrated guitarist
It’s just random notes you @“@@&
@@prpwnage9296 and it sounds sick!
David Bowie approved
haha i just watched that interview
Justin Bogenschutz yep
Also Thom Yorke
Bowie’s Cover of The Pixies “Cactus” is EPIC!
Category should be "Education"...
When I met my wife, she told me her favorite band was Violent Femmes and that she had seen Pixies live. What else do you do besides marry a creature like that on the spot?
I totally go to this school. it feels like a nowhere land, isolated from the rest of the world. the pixies, they give me hope.
ITS EDUCATIONAL
I was in Boston last year and I got a picture outside of U Mass. It meant everything!
Actually, this is abut U Mass Amherst, in the Pioneer Valley, get it? They're a Boston band, but I was there at the time, as it happens. :)
The song that their US record label Elektra should have pushed and released as a promo single to receive airplay on alternative radio stations but they didn't. History might have been different and Trompe Le Monde more successful in the US. Touring as the support band of U2 might have accelerated their split up because playing almost half empty in stadiums while U2 fans were preoccupied buying T Shirts must have not been good for their moral. And last but not the least, U2 never deigned to say hello in their dressing room and ultimate humiliation, on the door of their dressing room, it was always written "Support Band". The band was paid 750 dollars per night by American U2 tourmanager. a U2/ Pixies tour was a bad "good idea"
PiXiEs helped save my life....how could i die and miss the next album of PiXiEs or The Breeders....i had to dig deep for things to stay alive for when my brain was swelling.
mhm, smells like the Pixies to me
guys... look up Kurt Cobain's interview with rolling stones. He literally says in that interview that he always wanted to make a pop song like the Pixies and he literally said it was a rip-off of a Pixies style song...
That being said, this song is awesome! I'm gonna have to check out more Pixies shit...
He actually said 'all we wanted to be was a Pixies' cover band.'
Pop song… 🤣
Pop song… 🤣
@@dreamusdreamus557 What? Why do some people get so mad over the word pop? This is pop. It's very melodic and catchy and that's what pop means. What's wrong with that?
I'm a fan of the pixies but the movie accepted is what brought me here
Gigantic!!! The best alternative band of the history.
A big, big love!
Whole album rocks.
It's interesting that a band who hated each other's guts by this time could still produce a song this fun.
The pixies rule all.. There will never be anything better..
Having lived here my whole life I can confirm this is basically the Pioneer Valley theme song.
Ah, the Happy Valley. :) Bart's or Rao's or Haymarket still around? Have a coffee for me. :)
I swore April Skies was The Pixies from the other room and then I had to make sure which tune I had mixed up mostly-- always loved the noise element to Pixies. Like D. Sardy would approve.
Those early guitar days when you learn how to play this. ❤️ 🎸
DAE especially like how the first verse goes on and on while the second one is ridiculously short? Great playing with listener's expectations.
You guys played at Umass Boston in 83 or4 wirh Amie Mann and changed my life!!!!
I got accepted into UMass today!
It’s educational!! Isn’t it?
@@RedMissou I was, kinda
Yay !!!! That's awesome! I'm three years late but congratulations!!
@@aleshahansen5871 thank you! I got my diploma in the mail last June, I miss it already.
@@AUSHTEEN good for you! I hope all that work brings a job you enjoy - take care!
They should be in the fuckin Rock n Roll Hall of Fame!
I wish there were more bands like The Pixies and Sonic Youth.
❤❤❤ my favorite Pixies song
This song just makes me want to listen to this song some more
and before Nirvana there was....THIS!
+WESSERPARAQUAT Kurt said this band was one of his biggest influences. I think he meant biggest.
what is nirvana?
martin 7898 Scotland has so many great bands
Smooth Tony what the hell are you talking about?
Pixies >>>>>> Nirvana
Even tho I'm a fan of both
I received a lot of felatio at umass. Good times.
I'm here to celebrate UMASS winning tonight! TURN IT UP!!!
BEST. BAND. EVER.
I am applying to colleges, one of them being UMass, and listening to this song has stopped me from ripping my hair out due to the stress of this whole process lmao I am crying.
Love this so much. So inspiring and slacker 😊
homage to the bleeding liberal heart of my ol hometown
Pixies has influenced Nirvana, it's like that...
Song’s been around since the 80’s.
I would also add that, even if the Pixies had come along several years later ... I suspect they would never have been as "mainstream popular" as bands like NIrvana, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, et al.. Their music is just too unique, in your face, and so different from everything else that it does not cater to the masses and every day radio listening.
It is, nevertheless, the music that will undeniably survive the test of time and define the era historically from a musical perspective.
I really enjoy that Black Francis shouts out 6 of the top 4 worst C- words in the English language.
This song on your headphone when you enter to the bar : superhereo and supersexy, a light in the darkness
one of the greatest songs by this band =]
I love them both but the Pixies were around before Nirvana.
The Pixies Rule! had a friend that wanted me to hear his new car tape deck, he played Surfer Rosa on it, I said, "Nice Stereo, but who is that most Awesome Band?" Answer: It was the Pixies, Hands down it's always the pixies!!!!!
Just love them, they are great.
Let it rock!
You know what I like most about this song... it's educational
please just all agree pixies were way ahead of there time. and genX was the real. greatest generation
First time hearing this song..the chorus definitely reminds me of SLTS..damn Kurdt😆
ua-cam.com/video/Gn1jZGDMcW4/v-deo.html
This is there smells like teen spirit.
Everyone is talking about "Smells Like Teen Spirit".....but this songs riff sounds like "I Know There's Something Going On" by Frida!!!
In the first picture, Black Francis looks alarmingly like Syd Barrett when he visited the "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" session in '75.
Replay is mandatory
Tv on the radio - Caffeinated Consciousness
Once I heard somebody commenting that a lot of the "college guys" who used to dance and sing to this song were in a way made fan of through this song...and that made me smile
of the april birdsssss and the may beeeeeee
I like how they just look like normal people. Know what I mean? Not the ridiculously attractive plastic stars. Just people you'd want to have a chat with. And the music is fucking top quality. So that's a bonus.
My god people! First of all, there are few similarities between this and Smells Like Teen Spirit. Second, Kurt always said Teen Spirit sounded a lot like the Pixies. I love Nirvana. I love The Pixies. (Though personally I like the Pixies a little more....don't kill me! Nirvana was my favorite band until I heard these guys, and now they're a close second) Either way, neither is guilty of ripping the other off! Now just shut up and listen. :)
Pixies are far better
I like Cobain's lyrics, but Pixies are Pixies
Pixies > Nirvana. I myself am a Nirvana fan more than a Pixies fan but Cobain even said in an interview that SLTS was a Pixies rip off. That and More Than a Feeling by Boston
the chorus is exactly the same... same rythm and tempo on the guitar and the chord progression is only different for half a tone... you must be deaf. Chord progression plus tempo and guitar rythm... it´s obviously a ripoff... but obviously very different songs. sure... i guess haha... but sure... kurt was handsome and slim and frank blanck is bald and fat... i get why you like nirvana more... fanboy.
Cobain ripped off the Pixies song structure and song design and style in various ways.
You know I’ve heard this for years. I’ve listened to plenty of Pixies/Nirvana and I just don’t hear Nirvana in the Pixies or the Pixies in Nirvana to any level that’s noticeable without going out of my way to notice it. It’s always a stretch.
Sure they are the same genre. And, sure the song structure (verse/chorus/loud/quiet) is similar, but it is just basic rock and roll progressions from the 50s and 60s anyhow. The Pixies certainly don’t own this.
I think the Pixies have an entirely different and unique sound. It’s a totally different feel. The mood and emotion are far different.
Nirvana too has a unique sound with an entirely different mood and set of emotions.
What am I missing? These two bands just don’t sound the same to me at all.
Adam Crew, Tilt Mode Man Down
Dave Grohl acknowledged in many notes that the song seemed to him a robbery of the Pixies, but has the metric verse-chorus-verse, there was a robbery actually visible to the indie band.
Couldn't agree more. Thank you for saying this.
You can certainly hear the influence on Nirvana's smells like Teen Spirit. However, much like Led Zeppelin who jacked numerous blues tunes, from the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf and so on, the spin the band put on the tune makes it their own. Nothing wrong with being inspired by other artists, that's how you develop and grow, but let's keep it real and 100%. It's always the right thing to do acknowledging the original artist.
The funny thing is that Trompe le Monde was released one day before Nevermind... So yeah, no one ripped off anyone.
Trompe Le Monde being the 4th Pixies album... Mr Cobain was listening closely to the earlier stuff. And I say that as a Nirvana fan first and Pixies fan second (and having bought all of their albums as they were released)
5th album. Come on Pilgrim, Surferosa, Dolitte, Bassanova, then Trompe le Monde
come on pilgrim's an ep yo
You're right. Bottom line is that the Pixies are great and i have to commend you on your excellent taste in music first and foremost.
Britton Wainscott
One of the sickest Pixies acts!
Peace, love and happiness.
IT'S EDUCATIONAL!!!!!!!
Brilliant!
I've just gone through a list of songs of every Pixies song ever made, and this being the last, as I've already heard other songs after 'U-Mas' (in alphabetical order such as Where is my mind and vamos) and I have to say, The Pixies are GODS man. They literally are the sickest band of all time - in line with Nirvana, of course :P
More people listen to the Pixies at Hampshire than at Umass these days...
Can confirm as of a few years ago
And thaaaat's why it's a Pixies cover.
Is the female the same musician from that song "Cannonball"?
I have this track taken from the album, I had to cut of the end, cause the second song followed right after...
David Bowie brought me here. Thank you David x
@160ofthe90s wise words man. But we all know there are more than two greatest bands to grace the earth :)
Trompe le Monde was released on September 23, 1991.... Nevermind was released September 24, 1991. Teen Spirit was released as a single on Sept 10 & first performed live on April 17, 1991. U-Mass was not released as a single. Therefore any similiarity between U-Mass and Teen Spirit is purely coincidental, unless the Pixies happened to be at the OK Hotel in Seattle in April 1991 to hear Nirvana play SLTS live for the first time. Surfer Rosa however did make Kurt Cobain's top 50 album list.
Right about 1:00 Kim gets a nice slap going on the bass
Un grand album
influence is still going check out cage the elephant my niece was listening to them i thought it was a new pixies song
the best of all
Love being from the pioneer valley
i always wondered what song kurt was referring to when he says he ripped them off when he wrote smells like teen spirit, then i was casually listening to trompe le monde and i instantly knew he was referring to u-mass.
Kurt Cobain said outright that Smells Like Teen Spirit was written based on the structure of Pixies songs, i.e. that 'quiet, loud, quiet' sort of thing.
He ostensibly, and legitimately 'borrowed' from the Pixies - and categorically not the other way round. Besides, I think that Trompe le Monde also came out before Nevermind, so U-mass precedes Smells like Teen Spirit, albeit only by a few months (both released in 1991).
According to wiki this song is about when they met and became a band
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trompe_le_Monde
smells like EDUCATIONAL
Trompe le Monde was released on 9/23, while Nevermind was released on 9/24. However, Smells like teen spirit as a single was released on 9/10. And Smells like Teen Spirit was being written before U-mass was released and vice versa. Smells like Teen Spirit is more borrowed by Debaser, while U-Mass is just simply the Pixies repeating their technique.
With the lights out...oh...hang on a minute.
It's a reference to the Trompe-l'œila, an art technique that uses realistic imagery to create the optical illusion that depicted objects exist in three dimensions.
oh baby!
This song is frickin awesome!
awesome tune!!!!!
