I think this scenario showcases Toms understanding of chord structure a lot because, to me, the studio version feels more intimate & sadder (Tom knowing people will be listening on headphones & small speakers) but the live version carries that same sad tone but is more expansive (Tom knowing he'll be playing in a large venue with lots of people needing to hear the frequencies).
The live version reminds of the new-born-AvA era when Tom played blink (Down and Miss You) or Boxcar Racer (There is) slow versions, with a plugged clean guitar. Only he and his Gibson on stage, while the rest of the band was taking a break.
OMT is just acoustic Watch the World verse, chord progression and strum pattern. It's also basically the same as the way he plays the Always chorus live.
@@SugarpillProdwhen i saw your video and the real chords I immediately thought the same. It doesnt sound like a Tom chords choice. It probably was changed down the line.
@@sirbabycakes7839 oh yeah totally, it sounds straight from a BCR álbum but i think whoever was with him when tracking it might ve said "yeah those chords wont cut it, lets use some variations "
It's not unusual. He plays a lot of songs live very differently. They may sonically sound the same but they're noticable different on the album vs live. Down as an good example. It's simplified a lot to play live.
Just to nitpick a little bit the Gb/Db chord would usually be called F#5/C#, and the B7(no3) you would probably still call a Bm7(no3) - since the minor 3rd is implied by the tonality, and the brain has a tendency to hear it as a type of B minor chord.
Probably easier for tom to play standing live . This live progression is very similar to parts of Not Now which confused me when I saw the video cause its not whats being played in the studio version. Thanks for clearing it up
It could sound cool! I'm usually a big fan of having guitars play something slightly different in one ear to the other - though I'm pretty positive that's not what's going on in the studio version of OMT. Or the live version for that matter, as I don't think they had the acoustic guitar on a backing track, like they normally do with 'I Miss You'.
I was at the concert when they played it live for the first time. I think in the intro Tom also uses the 2nd and 3rd string on 7th fret. This is what I clearly heard and see on my video. Also he uses those 2 strings from time to time during the whole song.
I love these kinds of videos where you point out the details of the guitar playing in songs. I want to see you do one for My Own Worst Enemy by Lit because it drives me nuts that everyone plays it in E standard when the band plays it in D# tuning in the key of E.
I made a tutorial 2 days before the video was released. I went off what I heard and it's undeniable what the studio version is but still I was told I was wrong because of the music video and I'm sure this will only make it worse. Good catch though. I was wondering what you thought after seeing the live version.
Tom probably did write/ track one more time, it uses a very I feel so style riff, no? But he probably plays it live the way he does simply because it’s easier, he hardly has to move his hand
Maybe? At this point I honestly have no idea, but I can easily see someone else tracking it for them. It's not as though they haven't had additional musicians come in on sessions before.
@@SugarpillProd as a musician, I hate the idea of someone tracking something for me. Especially as someone as artistic as Tom. Hope it isn’t the case really.
Well they were still doing that hybrid studio thing, where Tom was recording partly at his, and Mark & Travis were recording at theirs, so you've gotta assume they're all sharing different ideas for all instruments. Same goes for the additional songwriters on each track.
@@muscularavocado3547 happens even with your band mates, like asking the drummer how do we enrich this riff, and they add silences or beats to make it stronger.
The live version is differant chords to the studio simple as that. Its actually slighty harder to play the studio version just because of the String muting, if you fuck up on the muting and hit an open string it sounds awful.
I'd absolutely love for you to break down asthenia, there's a lot going on there, especially the bridge, cannot work out that riff part, think there's 2 guitars?
The palm muted riff? I think it's possibly 3 main guitars, and then they might be adding a couple harmonised parts under the palm mutes, when he's hitting the higher strings, after the open notes.
@@SugarpillProd yeah the riffy chuggy part? Full song is interesting from a guitar pov, intro riff was recorded on a failing tube amp creating a scratchy sound
I down tune the b and high e string to a and d so I can play the studio version with some extra strings ringing because the acoustic by itself (no piano or bass) sounds a little empty.
To play like tom you need two things: great strumming patterns and variations of a power chord. Find a power chord you like the sound of and learn a 4/4 strum you like that isn't just up and down to the beat. Then move one finger to a random string that sounds good from the last sound you made. and do it again. His faster, earlier, stuff was all down pick so you just have to be born with the ability to down pick that fast so get creative and try playing like an actual learned guitarist in those cases.
I think it's the higher notes that throws it off to me, at least in the live version. It's a very dark, moody progression, but it sounds a little more lighter / upbeat the way he plays it live, I guess?
Tom’s using more full chords now instead of just power chords, which is great. In their newest song dance with me he’s using full minor chords in the verses instead of just power chords
If I had to guess, I'd say he probably didn't track it, so he's just playing his "version" of the song. The way he plays it live is a much more Tom-esque progression than the one you hear on the studio version. I think people forget how collaborative the recording process usually is, and that just because a band has 3 defined roles (guitarist, bassist, drummer) that doesn't always mean they're the one recording said part EVERY time.
Wouldn't / shouldn't make a difference honestly. It's not something like a double bass & electric bass, where you may have to adjust the playing a little so that it translates on both instruments. Acoustic and electric guitars can be played the same way.
I know lol, that's what this video (and the last one was about). The bit at the end labeled "studio version" are the chords you need to play along with the album version, or if you wanna play it like he does in the music video / live, then use the "live version" chords. Hope that helps!
