This by no means detracts from the fact that the boys in Blink know their shit and have earned their punk rock stripes. Same with Feldman. He's a great musician and Goldfinger are important to the pop punk timeline. He's also an amazing producer!

Can you guess which that is? I’d say that there’s some differentiation to be made between finding mainstream success in scratching and clawing to create your own niche/sound in the 90’s-00’s, and being long past the point of securing legendary status, but choosing to not work so hard creating your own songs and sound. Disney-Wave Blink has a lot of help on their songs, and a sound that is not very much Blink.
In my opinion toypaj has the best guitar tones of all time, not just in pop punk but literally of all time. Brian May from queen has my second favorite tone but he usually sounds pretty much the same because he only uses one guitar and one style amp for the most part and a lot of his tone is in his fingers.
Tom and Mark - their voices together just ooze the blink vibe. Dogs Eating Dogs was legendary. As much as I love Matt in blink and it gives it new territory to discover as it felt more like it achieved with Nine than California, I hope one day the Mark, the Tom, and the Travis reunite - but only if they truly want to, with the passion and love like from Self Titled or Dogs Eating Dogs.

(I'm glad he got them to bring the joke songs back on California, even if they were really short, but that's about the extent of my praise for him) He was great in Goldfinger, because the band was built around his production, but trying to implant that production on an already established band like blink-182 just doesn't work. The only issue I have with Matt is that he has trouble replicating Tom's guitar style on the old songs, but he is a great guitarist in his own right, just listen to Alkaline Trio, he's just very different from Tom. The drone note is the key element to Tom's sound that so many people (including Matt) always miss out on. Songs like I Miss You, Down, Violence, and Feeling This just aren't the same with regular octave chords

Trick #2 is actually a great idea for any kind of rock mix, in my opinion. I'm a beginner musician who mixes his own music and ever since I heard about that technique, the low end in my mixes started sounding MUCH better. I usually take the DI and low pass it, I mean really low pass it, like everything above 300 Hz I just throw away. And then I take the same DI, run it through an amp sim with a decent amount of distortion, and high pass it at about 200 to separate all the upper harmonics and the fuzziness, and then blend it together. Definitely recommend it to all the beginners like me.
Lots of Tom's guitar layers were made up of single coil pickup sounds. Also, if you coil split a duncan invader, you'll get a near perfect story of a lonely guy clean tone🥰

5:36 Tom most probably did use single coils in fact! He's stated in interviews that, although he had is signature Strats with the SD Invader during the Enema-Take Off eras, he always used Jerry Finns guitars when recording in the studio because they were better apparently, and he had loads. So Enema to Untitled are probably recorded with a multitude of different guitars (What's My Age Again and Stay Together For The Kids definitely sound like a single coil Telecaster to me). I knew that i‘m a big Blink Fan BUT i never knew that i use so much they use (The Crunch Bass with the Clean DI and the Single Coil/Himbucker Mix are my Base elements! But i don‘t use a SC in my Strat, I use a SD HotRail. Same effect, higher Output)
2:19 the clean guitar part is meant to be a very clean doubletracked part, with little to no effects, maybe just a touch of reverb. the original has a certain natural sound due to the inconsistencies of the double track, and it makes it sound almost like it has a flanger on it.

I would love to be able to get my songs to sound more professional. I have reaper and garageband right now but my main thing is mixing it right and getting the drums to sound right. I think the most important thing is to use single coils on any riff / leads parts. They cut through the mix so much more than humbuckers. I use an axe fx, so I can't really give you any specific amps, but as far as tone goes, it's mostly mid range. I usually cut all the lows, and either boost or cut the highs, depending on the mix. Hope that helps!

@@kyleallain8798 Essentially DI stands for "Direct Injection" - It involves plugging your bass directly into a preamp (for example an audio interface) so you can record it without using an amp - very common thing to do
2:28 doesn't look like any B note to me, bruh. If it's comfortable for you keep playing right up to the fret but I don't know where you learned, a lot of teachers will tell you fret toward yourself? But not as much as you are mang.... you're on like the damn fret itself... Playing IN BETWEEN the frets doesn't hurt brother.

for guitar: Palm Mute, Octave slides, Pull Offs, Simple open string riffs,Root note melodies, Never bend a note!!, Flanger/chorus is a must!
I haven't watched it yet, but rule no. 1; write riffs using the major scale.
Tom used a bunch of Jerry Finn's guitars during the recording of Toypaj & Enema, some of them were telecasters, so 5:39 is on point.

Yeah Tom used a lot of single coil strat and tele in enema at least. And also some les pauls (and explorers) after he got the signature fenders.

Yeah my bit is double tracked too. And I think the 'flanging' sound is down to the tape warble, as enema is tracked to tape.
