The Hangover Hike: Aspen's Ute Trail in Winter

- The Ute Trail is one of the most famous hikes in Aspen Colorado. The typical Ute hike climbs 3000 feet from the town of Aspen to the top of Aspen Mountain, but in winter, it's a whole different ball game. With no beta on how to hike the Ute trail in winter, on a warm winter day in Aspen, CO we set out to hike the Ute Trail in the snow and see how far we could get. Let's just say no one else has yet been crazy enough this season to hike (or rather post-hole) beyond Ute Rock!

That is a great idea, especially because Adam is going to be taking a Wilderness First Responder class so he can join in rescue operations, and then we can talk about all the stuff he learns there! ❤️

Thanks Carl! Oh my gosh, the rain and snow have been crazy here in Cali the last couple weeks. We're going to try to get out for a snowshoe this weekend -- will be interesting to see what it's like after a record amount of snowfall! ❤️
Beautiful as always, but the Sierra’s still rule. Mount Shasta video very informative too. Remember to always take crampons off when glissading, and Shasta is one of the best places to glissade, and usually plenty of snowboarders to make a great trail through Red Rocks and on down. Never laughed so hard! Life is good! Thanks for the beautiful music and scenery. VERY much appreciated ⛄️☃️❄️🥶💗

Mmmmmm, BACON. That area is absolutely stunning during peak fall color. I try to get there the 1st week of every October to paraglide over it all. You two would also love the hikes available from Aspen over to Crested Butte or Crystal and Marble. Best to go early June (overwhelming wildflowers) or late September. First time I hiked over West Maroon pass, I sat down in the flowers and cried a bit, more varieties within a few yards than I could count.
Oh my gosh, you had me at wildflowers! Definitely one of my favorite things on a hike. And SO cool that you paraglide it! We'll be trying to pack up and get out of LA before July so might not make it this June, but will def do it at some point and might very well be in CO for some fall hikes this September/October! --A

Serge that is so crazy about the lack of snow -- it must definitely be an El Nino year, because we just had record rain and snowfall this week and you guys are getting nothing! But probably that means it will reverse next year and you'll get a lot of snow! ❤️ --E
Ok, I guess Adam's description of "bushwhacking in the deep snow" is a lot more accurate than following some "trail". That's the feeling I've had from minute 1 of the video thinking that there is not much trail out there... interesting to watch these winter hike videos from you guys, because for me winter is more of a preparation season for summer hikes rather than attempting something of this sort. Good to see you trying this off season. Haha, also had to look up what a BLT is. Thanks for improving my English:)
Haha thank you -- yes we used to see winter as preparation season too. Sometimes it still is when there are big snowstorms making it dangerous to hike, but we've really been loving getting out there on popular trails winter because we usually have them all to ourselves. Hope you will try it! ❤️

Even though you did not get to go all the way up the trail, you still had a great hike with wonderful views! I was thinking about going hiking tomorrow but I see there is rain going on now so it will probably be wet again. I'm still waiting for our dry season to kick in here in Florida! When I was hiking around Colorado I did not go to Aspen. Maybe one day.
It's true, Joseph -- the best views on the whole thing were from the rock, so we weren't too upset about turning around. Not surprised you're getting rain now, because I think it's the same rain we were getting all last weekend! Sorry you didn't get out on a hike, but you guys probably needed the water just like California does, so maybe the rain's a good thing. ❤️

For sure, David -- we definitely availed ourselves of a couple of those restaurants and bars the night before this one 😂. It really is a beautiful area and the restaurants are great, though of course kinda expensive. Glad you've gotten to experience them! ❤️
We done this trail many times mid summer, you can hike to the restaurant on top and have lunch and beer. Then take the gondola down. It’s free for those who hike up. Give it try in the summer.
We definitely will, Dave! Really looking forward to getting to CO this summer and doing some big climbs, and this would be a super nice one to acclimate on before doing Capitol, etc., including lunch and beer! ❤️

Well, Adam, when I would be on an overnight hike or climb with some buddies, we would often pack in a celebratory bottle of something, so... and of course, even if we failed to make the summit or destination, we'd still drink it when the day was done! So there's no judgement coming from me! 😁

No, we’d wait til back at base camp - neither climbing or motorcycles mix well with too much drink!

Totally true. In fact, we will probably spend at least a month or two there at some point in the future when acclimating for a really high climb (like Denali or something). ❤️
Thanks for once again taking me to a "snack spot" I will never see myself! Aspen has always been one of my favorite ski town destinations. Way in the background at 5:40 I can see the single track road that a friend and I took a Jeep up to the high meadows area north of town right after the first snow that year (late October). The views back into town from the road were awesome (and pretty scary)
Yes Christine! I've ridden up most of those single tracks on mountain bikes -- the views are great and coming downhill on those things at speed gets your pulse rate up for sure. Must have been a real heart-pounder in slick snow! ❤️ --A

I so wish I could hike our west, but a lot of that felt like The Whites in winter. But when I travel out west, I've never there long enough to acclimate for higher altitudes.
Ya the acclimation is definitely the hardest part. We have the same thing coming from LA -- the first couple hikes at altitude are always super tough. But starting this summer we'll be living at altitude, which will make a huge difference! ❤️

Haha you know we dream about it, but just aren't sure if we can handle the altitude. We will do some 22 or 23,000 foot peaks in the next couple years now that we're going to be living at altitude, and if we do well on those then we'll see if we can move up from there! ❤️
