The Inevitable Downfall Of The Hangover Franchise
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 лис 2022
- When The Hangover first hit theaters, it took the world by storm. Coming out at the peak of the raunchy comedy era, The Hangover was beloved by everyone. It was so successful that the studio immediately green lit sequels. Though that's exactly where The Hangover series started it's dramatic downfall.

I love how Bradley Cooper addressed the fans who kept telling him “dude, those movies are my life” with “dude, you REALLY need to stop drinking!”
I recall hearing almost the exact same thing from the Trailer park boys.
It was actually a bit of a wake up call for me at the time lol
Ne and my friends had gotten obnoxiously carried away with quoting it EVERYWHERE and I thought to myself "if I'm ACTING like trailer trash, and that's all someone else sees..... then as far as they're concerned I AM trailer trash...... and my opinion won't matter if general consensus is the same...."
I'm just glad we were mainly just quoting it and smoking stupid amounts of weed, and none of us really fucjed up during that time-frame lol

"Sure you were buddy![pats on shoulder]"

It's easy to forget how big the first Hangover was. Probably the most quoted comedy since Anchorman, it felt like EVERYBODY had seen it.
i haven't seen it
Such an overrated film, too.
It was this and step brothers
@@JayFingers nah, I think being quoted to death by middle school boys, popularizing Zach Galifianakas for a few years then largely falling out of the social consciousness only to briefly pop up when you’re trying to remember what that baby with sunglasses on that bumper stick was from is probably the lot it deserves imo
@@AhmadAneeq I haven't seen it either. Some day I will.
I saw the Hangover 2 in theaters when I was 17 on a double date. The theater was packed and it was like a giant party in there. Never had a theater experience like that.
Yo! You right! It was one of my most memorable theater experiences 😂😂
And Hollywood has been trying to recreate that FOMO party atmosphere ever since.
I saw the first one and it was a truly a rare sight to be part of that human experience of people all laughing together at every joke and gag they threw. I felt like we were all family for a second and enjoying everyones company
I’m a bit older but my 3 favorite comedy experiences at a theater are dumb and dumber, Superbad and hangover. Dime and dumber stuck around for me much longer - I haven’t seen it in many years and yet I could recall most of the jokes.
Sounds like a nerd fest
What happened? They tried to force a franchise out of a film that was never designed to be one. We need to get back to one-and-done films.
Tbf, Star Wars wasn’t supposed to be a franchise at first either, but that worked out better due to the genre, I believe.
I liked the sequels
I agree. We never needed a ‘dude where’s my car 2’ some films are classic stand alones.
That why i'm scared of JOKER 2. But i trust Philips and Phoenix.
@@therealCrazyJake that had waayyy more material to work with, a literal universe
The downfall was inevitable because the whole premise was a one-time event. It was a crazy, once-in-a-lifetime sort of thing so zany that if you try to do it again, it is just ridiculous and loses any sense of novelty. And that novelty is why it works the one time. It is funny and entertaining and enthralling because it is so over the top. If you do it multiple times, it just because part of the normal universe.
You can apply the same logic to sooo many other things that should've just been one and done. People want more of that feeling but always fail to realize that it was so good because you don't see it all the time. People start treating that good hit of serotonin they got like a drug and want more and more movies to try and get that good hit like the first time but you can never go back BECAUSE it was the first time you saw something like that. I feel like that's how everything ultimately runs out of steam and why you need a good project lead to know when to pull the plug fully. Star Wars should've been like that, The Office too, same with any revival/remake Hollywood tries to push out.
@@ContinuumSpanner You're not necessarily wrong in that people want more of that particular feeling, but something like Star Wars lends itself to further stories down the road (and stories that take place in the past). Something like "The Hangover", however really was based around a SINGLE one-time event that had no real back-story, nor does it really set up future events. That being said, I actually applaud Hangover 3 for feeling like a true continuation, in that that Wolfpack actually had to deal with the ramifications of their actions in the first movie, whereas the second movie was literally just cut and paste their situation in another environment where EVERYTHING is now telegraphed because of what we know from the first one.

I was 18, and I worked at a movie theater so i got to hear about the hangover everyday. It was amazing, I’ve seen the end credits photos so many times and I will always love the movie.
The third one is, oddly, my favorite simply because it deviates from the formula. And it was always intended to be the final film in the series. The marketing for it outright said so.
Of the two sequels, I actually appreciate the third one more, as it feels like a true continuation that dealt with the fallout of the previous installments, without having to copy what was done previously.
Same here: I remember my friends having fun with part 2, which on the other hand I found boring as it was just the exact same movie in a different setting, like a raunchy version of Home Alone 2; part 3, while not being nearly as comedic, on the other hand I appreciated for the fact that it dared to do something entirely different by actually changing movie genre.
hollywood has no imagination does not know how to just make one film move on to something else, they have to kill an original concept into the dirt.
Proof not everything needs a sequel just because it was popular
Yea but yk how the industry works $$$$$$$ long as they think they can get more $$$ well get the fast n furious franchise lmaooo
As if Hollywood could ever tell the difference between a good or bad sequell.
But the sequels were good 😭😭😭

It’s weird because as much as I love the first, I personally thought the second was the most superior one of the 3
@@ApostolosFilms
Why is that exactly?
I've heard some say that, but I thought the humor was just juvenile, Alan was annoying, it just repeats everything but more crude and the consequences they deal with just aren't as funny.
@@welcometothemetaverse2523 I love the first one, it is a comedy classic. But for some reason the second one made me laugh harder when I went to go see it. Especially with how crude and Grungy it was compared to the first movie despite the rehash of jokes. I feel in the 3rd movie was the one where Alan was completely brain dead and the jokes weren’t hitting at all. At that point I thought bringing it back to Vegas wasn’t it, neither was the story. I know a lot of people don’t like the 2nd one, but idk I guess maybe the theatre energy was more intense than the first one.
The first Hangover film is still one of the best cinema experiences I've had. For some reason I had absolutely no idea about the film beforehand and just went to the cinema with two friends. Rarely have I laughed so much at a film and the atmosphere in the cinema. The other two films didn't even come close.
I always really liked the 2nd one actually. It was obviously essentially the same formula as the first but the whole thing felt elevated with a bigger budget and bigger consequences. The drug monkey storyline was hilarious & the pictures that they look back on at the end of the movie get me every time 🤣
I don't know if even the original totally holds up today, but it is one of those films where you had to be there when it was released to really connect with it. It seemed to come out at a time when people really wanted just a fun comedy movie and to forget reality for 1.5 hours. Plus the 3 or 4 leads somehow went together perfectly. Look, it was a solid comedy in Las Vegas and it was a good one for sure. As Home Alone 2 was copy of the original but it was fun and funny, in the case of Hangover sequel, not so much lol.
this is the first time the phrase "connected with the Hangover" has ever been written
It still holds up. The premise, the comedy the plot. It's all still pretty solid
@@Reykh24 For sure. I would watch it again for sure.
People still want a fun comedy to forget the world for an hour or two. The problem is that Hollywood doesn't make those types of comedies anymore. Forced jokes, poor writing, and dumbed down characters are a few of the plethora of issues plaguing modern comedy films

Yeah, but striving away from the formula completely didn't do much service either. It felt like a generic heist movie.
I never got the impression that the franchise came to an 'Inevitable Downfall'. I thought that the writing seemed consistent across the board having each of the members of the wolf pack get married except for Phil because he was already married. I think that the series had an expiration date having 4 lead characters, but I wouldn't say they 'ran out of ideas'. We all knew exactly what we were in for when we saw the sequels right? At best it would be a rehash of the same old comedy set to the marriages of the remaining members of the wolf pack. I don't think there would have been a part 4 realistically speaking. I think they did well with what they had under the parameters they set with the first movie.
trueee!
watching the hangover in late 2009, early 2010 was such a trip. I was very little but I still remember it being on all the time on HBO or some other channels. it's just one of those films that literally everyone has seen. a first one is a classic.
I saw the Hangover trilogy for the first time, earlier this year, and I enjoyed them. There were some aspects of the sequels I did not like as much when compared to the first movie but I don’t remember what they were.
I miss this genre. It was peak of comedy in film
It had its hits, but way more misses I would say. The Hangover is very re watchable, a lot of other movies from that era, not so much

i dont know about you guys but i loved all the hangover movies... my fav part on the third part was when stu and chow were cutting the alarm wires in his house
Personally I loved the 2nd one more than the first one, while the third one definitely felt like the end of an era which I liked and it felt more like a serious movie with comedy inserted occasionally
I enjoyed all three too. It always puts me in a better mode. The actors are a great ensemble
Part 2 was jokes, Part 1 was also funny but the final one felt flat and boring.
I loved all 3 of them. I wish they would make a prequel to when Phil got married.
Phil was already married in the first part though.
Or a prequel of Leslie Chow.
Corporate greed was definitely its downfall. Should've been left as a one and done and then focused on creating the same vibe but with different movies since movies like Horrible Bosses, Project X and other over the top rated R comedies did farely well after the Hangover

@wlndbeach taxi driver sucks
@wlndbeach I think the people who say that have never actually watched Taxi Driver and are just parroting opinions. I have. Joker pays homage in aesthetic and setting, with some similarities in the characters, but its very much its own story. If anything, it lifts more from King of Comedy. I love The Hangover Trilogy never understood why it gets so much hate maybe one day people will appreciate it
People are allowed to have different opinions. Hence the video explaining why
The 1st Hangover was a classic, Hangover 2 was ok..
Hangover 3 was straight trash

The only good one was the first
To be fair it’s the highest comedy grossing movie franchise of all time. It’s done something like 1.5 billion dollars now worldwide. I think it gets abit of hate but largely the numbers and the comments show how loved it is.
Good take, however i would also add the sequal movies took place in more exotic locations the core audience of westerners could not relate to as much. Beeing that I have been to Thailand and Mexico I would say the movies do a fantastic job showing fish out water comedy tropes that worked well for those locations.
Garbage take. People all over the world watch Hollywood movies set in the US, you think we can relate to that?
@@radhiadeedou8286 are you disagreeing with me and telling me what my opinion is? I simply agreed with the videos take and added that they are good fish out of water movies for non well traveled Americans to watch. So yes the series did decline in quality but from a non well traveled American Point Of View they could be a deascent representation of FOOW comedy. I did not say or insinuate anything about non Americans POV viewing movies made/set in America.
Personally I love the whole trilogy. The first one is the classic where it all started. I used to hate the second cause it felt like a lazy rehash Of the first but after a few rewatches I've grown to appreciate where it ups the ante in some spots and improves on the first one. The third one has a notably different feel. It almost feels like an over the top action movie in some spots more than the first two but I love it for that and it ties up the trilogy really well. Plus it was the first one I watched so it's always special to me. I get that some people might think the two sequels are unnecessary and technically they are but not unappreciated. Each one explores avenues I didn't necessarily ask for but I'm happy they're there and by the end of the trilogy there are a few good throughlines in the series that make it all feel holistic. I think a fourth mightve have pushed it after the way three ended so I think they called it quits without overstaying their welcome and tainting the series
I think this is a smart and in depth analysis of this movie but I also think that this is where I have a problem with the premise of the video…It’s too smart and in depth for a movie like this but definitely this is a great video and keep up the content
Have you noticed that it has been a minute since a big quotable comedy has hit theaters.
the last funny movie i remember in theatres was game night with jason bateman..that was in 2018 i believe
Because now they're on streaming platforms instead. When it comes to the cinematic experience, Hollywood producers aren't willing to risk pitting a mid-budget comedy against superheroes. But they'll happily greenlight them if they're going direct to Netflix.
That's because they are gone mate, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson, rob snieder, Chris rock, Adam Sandler, Chris rock, will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, ect ect it's all gone, there is no backfill of funny people to fill in for all these people there is even more but this was just off the top of my head
I agree with all of you guys.
Superhero movies replaced comedies, that's the only "comedy" movies that get made.
The Hangover was a classic case of a joke that overstayed its welcome.
Hollywood doesn't how to quit when they're at the top. The plan has always been let's run this ship to ground.
I really miss this kind of movies!
I remember watching this movie in theaters with my dad, throughout the whole film everybody in theater was audibly dying of laughter. You couldn't walk more then 4 blocks on south beach without seeing the "Baby Glasses" merch! Talking about the movie when it released felt like a really nice time to be alive. Now I feel like people don't bond over comedy like this anymore, only over which superhero had the better movie.
Yeah, people are being guided to not enjoy carefree, large social activities like that anymore.. Those are the things that you will never forget, and that sparked happiness in your soul, because we are social creatures.. Now people are being taught to put on a mask and avoid interactions like that.. it’s really sad. But great that you have that positive memory.. I have many myself like that.. Hopefully things will go back towards that carefree, enjoyable way of living..
“No wonder why the third movie was the final one on the series”
Well obviously, if you saw the ending of the third movie then it makes a lot of sense because all the characters are given closure. also i thought the second movie was arguably funnier than the first, and the third one had the best action out of all of them.
part 2 was the decline, part 3 was the comeback
I couldn’t even finish part 3. I still don’t know how it ends.
The 2nd was the BEST! I enjoy them abroad.😅
Watching the first Hangover in theater when it came out in 2009 my friends & I had no expectations of what the movie would/could be. I can tell you it was one of the best cinema experiences I had till this day. That movie was so dope & funny. Unfortunately, it was one of those movies it's very hard to topple as a sequel. Same happened eventually with Bad Boys, Scary Movie & Fast & Furious imo. Though Fast & Furious is still probably making a lot of money in the box the story/plot gets only horrendously worse. It probably only attracts teenagers around the world. But I can easily watch F&F 1,2,3 all the way till the one in Brazil before I be like yeah this shit has gone too far.
I was 100% certain the Hollywood executives would have made this into a tv series... I'm glad they didn't
Did they make it into a video game, or was that just a joke in the tv show Happy Endings?

I liked all 3, hope they come out with the 4th when the time is right
The original Hangover it's still very funny to me, the sequels are kind of a guilty pleasure, and it's one of the few live-action movies where I prefer watching the dubbed version, since there're 2 Latin American Spanish dubs, a "Neutral" version and one filled with Mexican slang words and they're so funny and quotable, and all the voice actors did a great job
By 2009, zany, raunch-filled R rated comedy films were thriving like nobody’s business. That summer, the family and I went about on a evening trip to a drive in theater to see the spectacle that was “The Hangover”, perhaps the most talked about comedy film of the times. I had to been about 8, and had no idea for the kind of ride I was in for. There was a lot of eye closing (nudity), “oohs” and “aahs” and a shit ton of laughter-induced tears. An experience of a lifetime
I remember liking part 3 but I can’t remember a single thing from it that wasn’t in the trailer which kinda says all you need to know
Hang over one will forever be a classic. Watched quite a few times.
Hangover 2, I hated it, watches it a couple of times
Hangover 3, I really enjoyed giving it a different feel. Watched it more than a quite of few times.
I saw hangover 1 when I was 7, Hangover 2 when I was 9 and Hangover 3 when I was 11 all in theatres… I honestly had no business watching those as a little kid but I thoroughly enjoyed them, and still do to this day.

I remember when the first film came out and me and my coworker loved it. I made a bet with him after we left the theater that if it has a sequel it will have to take place in Bangcock... When the trailer dropped years later . I was right..
Watched the first one with my then girl friend and, from the moment she laughed as hard as I did and that we shared the same humor, I knew she was the one. She died from covid in 2020, we were together for 11 years and knew each other since kindergarden, she's still the love of my life.

It's like everything that's lightning in a bottle. Hits the right notes at the right time but eventually it fizzles out.
There is a Simpsons episode where Homer and Ned get married to showgirls in Las Vegas while drunk. It was aired before this franchise
The Hangover Part 3 is a movie I haven't seen in YEARS but there's one thing you need to understand: That's not Tijuana. The place is actually Nogales Arizona/Sonora. It's still special because it's both a blessing and a curse because Nogales gets reconized by us and the people near the area but the downside is that Nogales will only be known about that. Take it from me, that's all my hometown will EVER be known for.

The Hangover had the same downfall as every other comedy movie franchise has had.Look at Austin Powers & Vacation movies, by the last movies of those franchises they were a completely different movie from what made them famous.
I also think part of the problem Hollywood doesn't get about fast tracking these comedy sequels is that it was a product someone cared about doing a good job with in the first one. The other 2 feel definitely more produced for a quick turnaround and kinda lose their comedic voice and identity with it
I can't believe Part 2 made so much money. I don't remember it being that big a deal when it came out.
It was probably cause people loved the first one so much they were excited when a 2nd movie was coming out
Love all three of the movies. I will jump in joy if Philips ( and only Philips ) announced a 4th one.

Geez, this guy is pretty hard to please!
Hangover 2, despite being a remake of the first, was still great and Hangover 3 was an awesome climax to a great trilogy.
Just like the Oceans movies, they deviated in the second movie and took it away from Las Vegas but then corrected everything by going back to wrap everything up.
Both great trilogies!
Everyone in my high school was paging Dr. F for some reason
I feel if they just incorporated Doug in the group after the 1st movie, they would have been much better. Without him, it was just the same movie essentially
I actually like Part 2 just as much as Part 1 or maybe even more. That's probably because Part 1 was such a surprise hit and I didn't see that one in theathers.
Also because a lot of friends told me Part 1 was so great I saw it after they had seen it and Part 2 I watched with them in theathers.
Part 3 I really dislike because of the deviation of the plot. Also it ends with the same premise as the first 2 and everybody in the theather was like: 'Why didn't they tell that story?!'
The hangover part 3 is not even a hangover movie!! From a business perspective they had to keep the title. But changed the story!!
I recently re-watched the trilogy last year. Honestly I feel like everyone on Twitter would Slam it, if the movie came out today!! 😂
The hangover is over
2009!? Oh my God I feel so old.
I loved all 3 of them, they're all funny in their own right.
Todd Phillips was a genius. He knew what people wanted to see. And was willing to gamble on it. Didn't even have to shame people into liking it
I actually liked The hangover 3 but definitely not the second film at all.
I think there was something inspired about the first film, but it was clear as the sequels went on that even the director seemed to loathe having to go back to the "franchise" given how much one retreads the previous and the other seemed like a coordinated attack on the sequel and dark comedy as a whole.
Happy Thanksgiving

I love all 3 movies, and I know its an unpopular opinion, but the 2nd movie is actually my favorite of the 3.
Yeah these Hangover movies are damn near the same scene repeats of the last movie that came before that movie.
I would definitely watch another Hangover if nothing else just for the nostalgia.
It seems like these days there are no great comedy films in theaters anymore. Best "modern era" comedies have been on HBO (Silicon Valley, Eastbound & Down, Vice Principles and The Righteous Gemstons). We need the old school comedy back to theaters. Films like Animal House, Vacation, Old School, Porky's can't be appreciated enough.
