I was the light guy for the outlaws in the early 90s. What a great time,bunch of great guys. We toured with Foghat, Badfinger, Toy Caldwell, Leslie West from mountain and Blue Cheer. Great time in my life.
Were you with them when they rolled through Richmond, VA in the early 90’s? We opened for them and I met Hughie by accident backstage. SUPER nice guy and he showed me how to play “Green Grass and High Tides” the right way. I was tuning my guitar up and was just messing around with the intro. This dude comes walking by and says “Hey nice Les Paul man, you know you’re playing that wrong…” I said: “Thanks man! Oh, do you know this song?” He grinned and said: “I wrote it” Could’ve knocked me over with a feather. What a nice man. We talked about how he had problems with the adjustment screws on the Fender saddles cause they dug into his hand when he was doing those muted double stop licks. Then he had to get going. Just a nice guy. I was a young punk with long hair and guys like him were inaccessible to me. I hope wherever he is he’s doing alright. RIP.
@@johnhudak3829 That's a lot of years ago. What was the name of your band? We almost always had an opening act and I always did the lighting for them. The opening act only had a few lights. Kind of an unwritten law. I saved the main light show for the Outlaws. I was up and down the east Coast several times. I have no doubt I was with them in VA. My time with them was late 1989-1992 with a hit and miss here and there. I never traveled out of the country with them. I wish I would have had the opportunity. But it is expensive to travel out of the country and I had just started a family. Hughie was a great dude. I'm still pretty bummed he passed.

This band, like Marshall Tucker and a few others that played 'Southern Rock' were a fantastic example of tight playing and a fusion of Americana music and hard rock. I saw them during this era, and I'm getting chills listening to Huey playing that strat. RIP brothers. It WAS a better time.....
Me too…only the 60’s and 70’s. Lived in the Bay Area in the early 80’s, lots of Dead, Dead Kennedy’s. Not that anyone cares but my abbreviated list….Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, everyone except John Lennon😞 couldn’t get tickets for Bangladesh concert(grew up in NYC) I’m now 70…no regrets
What a remarkable nugget this video is! So amazing to see video and audio of such high quality from over 40 years ago recorded with the technology of the day. But what really blows me away is the performance. I'm a huge fan of Henry Paul and appreciate so much what he does to keep the Outlaws legend thriving and the spirit of Southern Rock alive today. But seeing the Outlaws with this classic linup playing at their peak reminds me why I fell in love with this band in the happy days of my wasted youth. Huguie was always the heart and soul of the band to me. May his flame always burn on brightly in the songs he left us with. Thanks for posting this wonderful performance to remind me!

❤ I'm proud to say that in 1976 a beautiful blonde haired girl asked me if I would drive her and her friends to a concert in St Louis Missouri called The Outlaws at the American and I said oh awesome so my friend and six other beautiful girls went to the Outlaws with me as their chaperone and it was an awesome time I'll never forget the Outlaws rule. ❤

Was it when they opened for Sabbath in 1982? 😊 Sabbath with Dio on vocals at the Seattle Center ARENA. The MOB RULES tour. These guys were the openers. Only a 4 piece when I saw them. Great show.
I saw these guys in a tiny club in my town in the mid 1980’s. We were teenagers with fake ID’s, and we decided to take a taxi into town to drink some beer. The taxi stopped at a local motel to pick up two more people. They were with The Outlaws, and heading to the gig. That’s how we learned that the Outlaws were playing at JB’s Rock III that night. So we stayed for the show… and THEY ROCKED SO HARD AND HEAVY, we couldn’t believe how good the show was, and how much we enjoyed it. It also held the distinction of being the LOUDEST concert I had ever seen. The room was so small and the sound system was so big. It wasn’t until just a few years ago that I finally experienced a possibly louder band, when I sat in the front row of an Offspring concert. But that Outlaws show will always have a significant place in my memories. We walked home, and our ears rang for 3 days. Good times…
Saw these guys at the Hollywood Sportatorium, Hollywood Florida, in the early 80's. They were phenomenal. They are the reason I picked up the guitar. I cannot remember who opened up for them. Best performance I have ever seen. The only group that ever came close was the Black Crowes, in the mid 2000's.
*One of the best live shows I EVER saw! (and I've seen a bunch in my 67 years)* It was 'around' this same time, 1978 - 1981 (without checking my saved ticket stub). I saw them in west Michigan at Grand Valley state college. The opening band was Jonathan Edwards ('Sunshine' 1971). A few songs into his set, Jonathan asked for people to be quiet so he could sing a song without his band or any acoustics. There was some rowdy guys in the back who kept screaming *"OUTLAWS!!"* every time people got quiet. After a couple tries? They kept it up so he simply walked off the stage and didn't return. It took a bit of time before the Outlaws were ready to come on stage, but when they did? Everyone forgot all about Jonathan Edwards and any entertainment they might have missed because of these loud guys in the back. As I recall they played for the better part of an hour (maybe more).
@@mcraft2240 I disagree. Check out any southern rock band with 3 and explore the parts. They're never playing the same thing, but always complimentary notes and chords ala Alan Collins of Skynyrd.
I'm 67, and for about 50 of em, Huey Tommason (sp, I tried.), was, and is my guitar hero. Met him once, miss him still. Hope he's jammin with Stevie, and Jimi, and Duane, etc.

I kind of agree with the Bible Thumpers, now that I’m one of them. But I can honestly say that I believe that the Outlaws had their knowledge of Jesus Christ and His saving grace. They were raised Southern Baptists. The thing about an Easter Sunday concert was, and they would probably agree that they would be better off in Church that night. I know that they were seeking to do right, for the most part. It was hard to get the pot out of their hands, except for Rick CUA, the bassist. He lives out his Christian faith to this day.
Hughie and Billy's chemistry together was incredible! Cua is also fantastic, have loved his playing for years. Still have my Outlaws, Henry Paul, Freddie and the Wildcats and Cua's solo vinyl.
That's right. They were both great players and way those 2 meshed was better even than ABB or Skynyrd's guitarists. Saw them 7 times in this era, most with Freddy but once or twice with Henry Paul.
@@AU88I was at that show. I refused to pay (I think) $17 for a ticket (can you imagine?) so my brother came up from West Palm and bought me one for my birthday. There was another opening act, and I think it might have been Van Halen? (BTW they sounded terrible with the limited amont of equipment they were allowed on that football stadium stage! The majority of the stage was filled up with Stones gear) The Henry Paul Band sounded great with the same limited equipment. I'm forever grateful to my brother because I got to see the Stones before it cost $200 and they played the same songs lol. I get confused a bit about the openers because not much later I saw the Who in the same place and I think the openers were Joan Jett and the B-52's. Lol the B-52's actually got booed off the stage (talk about a bad choice of openers). Good times, good times.

I missed that Who show…want to say it was right around Thanksgiving, and my family was on the road. But the following week at school I heard more about the booing of Joan Jett & the B-52s than The Who’s set. Ah, memories!

I used to play green Grass and Hi Tides the rhythm part while my friend played the leads. He turned me on to the guitar 🎸 so I bought a Les Paul copy and we used to jam at his house on this song and Free Bird. Again I played the Rhythm. I stunk at lead and preferred Rhythm guitar and he was good on lead and dislikes playing rhythm so we were a duo. We would jam for hours on weekends and it was a lot of fun. We weren’t as good as the Outlaws or Skynyrd but my friend did play the same lead breaks as they did. He was pretty fast for his age. So this show brings back good memories! Thanks!
I met a junior high dropout kid. Went to his duplex and he could play Green Grass note for note. That is all he did. Play it over and over with the turn table and his Les Paul/Marshall. Played all the solos. No you tube, no tabs, all by ear. That is how you get to Carnegie Hall. Practice.
@@xxcelr8rs Thats one way to do it. The way most did. But it’s so much better now. Back then one had to play by ear and sight. Or Tablature the way I learned. Now you have UA-cam lessons where they show you up close how to play something and they break it down for you. Much Easier to learn now. I wish UA-cam was around when I was learning. I would have learn a lot more and faster. Now is the best time to learn guitar 🎸 because of all the free video lessons on UA-cam. But one still must play and acquire the chops to be good like your friend did. Thanks for sharing!
"...not as good as..." Who cares?! If you had fun then it's always good!!! I took guitar lessons in the mid '60's (because, you know, The Beatles) but hated practicing and my teacher was boring. Well, 50 some years later I discovered 3 string cigar box guitars! I build'em and am learning the rock I wished I could've played back then... and I can play the rhythm to Green Grass (the solos? Hell no!! 😆)... of course, I'm not "as good" but I'm sure having fun!!

If you’re feeling low, you play some blues and express yourself and then you feel better. Don’t you? Then you play something upbeat and you feel good! So it’s a powerful force for good when you play an instrument ! 🎻 Music sends out a Vibe or Vibration into the Air. They are Sound Waves after all.
@@hurdygurdyguy1 The friend I had who turned me on to playing the guitar 🎸 at 15 also frustrated me. I used to go over to his house to jam. He taught me the basic chords. He liked to play lead guitar 🎸 so he did while I strummed out the rhythms. We played for hours and jammed on songs we learned. No drummer. Then he got a girlfriend and she would watch us play. Then he got irrational and would give me dirty looks if I looked at her. He was crazy possessive about her and green eyed with jealousy if I even talked to her! She was a sweet girl but I wasn’t after her or anything. But I got tired of his crazy jealousy and stopped going by him to play and it ended our friendship. He was blinded by love and went crazy. I was done with him because he was too irrational! So I didn’t have any one to practice with anymore and got bored and quit. It makes me sad and mad just thinking about it now.
Billy and Hughie are somewhere beyond the scene you see now, together playing great music again. You can go there and see them, but you have to love, believe and feel before the burst of tambourines take you there. RIP Billy Jones RIP Hughie Thomasson Green grass and high tides forever.
In all my banding days, I've never had more respect for any other band, than The Outlaws. Whilst we were supporting Smokie, Showaddywaddy, Liverpool Express (look them up) and fulfilling our own gigs, in any rest period I found, I turned on with The Outlaws, their combined talent simply blew me away. The fact that this 'live' concert exists... Makes me a very happy man!
Great band, still have their albums, also gravitated to Henry Pauls solo albums, his music was outstanding to. Miss the days of the 70' and 80's. There will never a time like this ever again.

I saw that hem three times. Once back in the 70's with Skynyrd. Once with Sammy Hagar, J. Geils Band and REO Speedwagon. Later in the 90's with Marshall Tucker and Fabulous Thenderbirds.
Saw them in 1981 in Hollywood Florida at the Sportatorium. It was , "The Outlaws", "Molly Hatchet", "38 Special", and "The Johnny Van Zant Band". Man what a show!!!! It was awesome!!!!!
One show was Outlaws, Hatchet and 38. Almost exactly a year later it was Outlaws, Hatchet and JVZ. I was at both. The one with 38 was my first concert.
Ive just found The Outlaws and then watched this. How, after loving rock music (in England) since the early 80s have i never found them. Especially as I really like Blackfoot, bits of Skynryd and Molly Hatchet. This show looks awesome!

great upload thanks. So nice to see Hughie and Billy going back and forth. They really were the best at this with all due respect to others. I followed them on their first UK tour back in the late 70s I think (am I allowed to say that?) and saw a number of their gigs. I don't think the audience was quite ready for their full out assault. They visited a couple of times after from memory and I caught them whenever I could. Last time was in some dumpy bar in Miami, by mistake. Could not believe my luck. The guy I was with was trying to pick up chicks and I was simply watching Hughie strut his stuff. No Billy by that time. What a wonderful band. RIP Billy and Hughie. You guys were the best. Thanks again.

I saw them Jan 26 1981, San Diego Sports Arena. 38 Special opened for them. Saw most of the Southern rock bands back then and I thought the Florida Guitar Army was the best of them all

Brother... All those men on that stage are deceased. Henry Paul I the only living original member. He now fronts a tribute band called the Outlaws. Hughie was the "OUTLAW " with his Ole sidekick , to the left , guitar man Billy Jones. GOD BLESS THESE MEN !
Saw them at SUNY Stonybrook perhaps 76 two dollars, they were an opening act and I had no idea who they were. Really don’t remember much. Many many great college concerts which is why I became a Chef instead a physicist .
I went to high school with these guys, Dave dicks,monty yoho, hueey , Billy, monty and I had married our wife's together in north Carolina. I'm 71 now .
Wow what a great band. Every time they would play in the DC - Baltimore area me and my wife of 40 years were there. Never missed a show. They recently played at a small venue in Crowsville, MD. But I was in the hospital and missed them. I think George Thuragood (check my spelling) was there as well. Green grass and high times forever. I hope they come to town one more time. If so we will be there.

Freddie on Long Gone is really good. All I can say is that one of the best live songs of all time on record is Green Grass from Bring It Back alive. 20+ minutes of pure electricity. The locking and mixing is awesome. 40+ years later. I just took out the record, cleaned it and fired up the turn table. Nothing better then a live LP.
Totaly different, they are all southern, they know each other, in these days70’s-80’s there were no mobile Phone or computer games so Some started playing music, 38 special, lynrd, outlaws, Molly hatchet and so on

I was in high school in the seventies, they played Long Beach arena and Molly hatchet opened for them! Great concert of southern rock!

I remember this in '76. Mind was long blown with great music, then I heard this. To this day, Green Grass and High Tides give me the chills.

Saw The Outlaws open for Black Sabbath in Denver in 1982. Mind blowing show, both bands killed it and to this day, the loudest show I've ever seen.

Same. I saw them in Phoenix. It was scheduled for Easter Sunday but the bible thumpers were in an uproar and got it postponed.

The Outlaws were the first group whoever made me plug up my fingers in my ears. But they sounded great.
I kind of agree with the Bible Thumpers, now that I’m one of them. But I can honestly say that I believe that the Outlaws had their knowledge of Jesus Christ and His saving grace. They were raised Southern Baptists. The thing about an Easter Sunday concert was, and they would probably agree that they would be better off in Church that night. I know that they were seeking to do right, for the most part. It was hard to get the pot out of their hands, except for Rick CUA, the bassist. He lives out his Christian faith to this day.
Be sure and watch the lead guitars and drums on Green Grass and high tides. Absolutely Awesome job. Killer show

Hughie and Billy's chemistry together was incredible! Cua is also fantastic, have loved his playing for years. Still have my Outlaws, Henry Paul, Freddie and the Wildcats and Cua's solo vinyl.
I saw The Stones in Orlando in 1981. The opening act was The Henry Paul Band.
That's right. They were both great players and way those 2 meshed was better even than ABB or Skynyrd's guitarists. Saw them 7 times in this era, most with Freddy but once or twice with Henry Paul.
@@AU88I was at that show. I refused to pay (I think) $17 for a ticket (can you imagine?) so my brother came up from West Palm and bought me one for my birthday. There was another opening act, and I think it might have been Van Halen? (BTW they sounded terrible with the limited amont of equipment they were allowed on that football stadium stage! The majority of the stage was filled up with Stones gear) The Henry Paul Band sounded great with the same limited equipment. I'm forever grateful to my brother because I got to see the Stones before it cost $200 and they played the same songs lol.
I get confused a bit about the openers because not much later I saw the Who in the same place and I think the openers were Joan Jett and the B-52's. Lol the B-52's actually got booed off the stage (talk about a bad choice of openers).

I missed that Who show…want to say it was right around Thanksgiving, and my family was on the road. But the following week at school I heard more about the booing of Joan Jett & the B-52s than The Who’s set.

Henry Paul is a very smart dude
Henry is an Outlaw, plain and simple. He has a great personality and a great singing voice. Also, a very level headed man.
I used to play green Grass and Hi Tides the rhythm part while my friend played the leads. He turned me on to the guitar 🎸 so I bought a Les Paul copy and we used to jam at his house on this song and Free Bird. Again I played the Rhythm. I stunk at lead and preferred Rhythm guitar and he was good on lead and dislikes playing rhythm so we were a duo. We would jam for hours on weekends and it was a lot of fun. We weren’t as good as the Outlaws or Skynyrd but my friend did play the same lead breaks as they did. He was pretty fast for his age. So this show brings back good memories! Thanks!
I met a junior high dropout kid. Went to his duplex and he could play Green Grass note for note. That is all he did. Play it over and over with the turn table and his Les Paul/Marshall. Played all the solos. No you tube, no tabs, all by ear. That is how you get to Carnegie Hall. Practice.
@@xxcelr8rs Thats one way to do it. The way most did. But it’s so much better now. Back then one had to play by ear and sight. Or Tablature the way I learned. Now you have UA-cam lessons where they show you up close how to play something and they break it down for you. Much Easier to learn now. I wish UA-cam was around when I was learning. I would have learn a lot more and faster.
Now is the best time to learn guitar 🎸 because of all the free video lessons on UA-cam.
But one still must play and acquire the chops to be good like your friend did.

"...not as good as..." Who cares?! If you had fun then it's always good!!! I took guitar lessons in the mid '60's (because, you know, The Beatles) but hated practicing and my teacher was boring. Well, 50 some years later I discovered 3 string cigar box guitars! I build'em and am learning the rock I wished I could've played back then... and I can play the rhythm to Green Grass (the solos? Hell no!! 😆)... of course, I'm not "as good" but I'm sure having fun!!

If you’re feeling low, you play some blues and express yourself and then you feel better. Don’t you? Then you play something upbeat and you feel good! So it’s a powerful force for good when you play an instrument ! 🎻

@@hurdygurdyguy1 The friend I had who turned me on to playing the guitar 🎸 at 15 also frustrated me. I used to go over to his house to jam. He taught me the basic chords. He liked to play lead guitar 🎸 so he did while I strummed out the rhythms. We played for hours and jammed on songs we learned. No drummer.
Then he got a girlfriend and she would watch us play. Then he got irrational and would give me dirty looks if I looked at her. He was crazy possessive about her and green eyed with jealousy if I even talked to her! She was a sweet girl but I wasn’t after her or anything.
But I got tired of his crazy jealousy and stopped going by him to play and it ended our friendship. He was blinded by love and went crazy. I was done with him because he was too irrational!
So I didn’t have any one to practice with anymore and got bored and quit. It makes me sad and mad just thinking about it now.

In all my banding days, I've never had more respect for any other band, than The Outlaws. Whilst we were supporting Smokie, Showaddywaddy, Liverpool Express (look them up) and fulfilling our own gigs, in any rest period I found, I turned on with The Outlaws, their combined talent simply blew me away. The fact that this 'live' concert exists... Makes me a very happy man!
Great band, still have their albums, also gravitated to Henry Pauls solo albums, his music was outstanding to.
Miss the days of the 70' and 80's. There will never a time like this ever again.

I remember when they played Saratoga New York on Father's Day June 1981, and it was broadcast nationwide on the radio.

FINALLY, the show can be seen in great quality. Been waiting for this a long time. Now if only the 38 Special show at Lorelei can also be uploaded in great quality like this, it would be really special. They gave a powerful performance. Southern rock fans deserve it!!
great upload thanks. So nice to see Hughie and Billy going back and forth. They really were the best at this with all due respect to others. I followed them on their first UK tour back in the late 70s I think (am I allowed to say that?) and saw a number of their gigs. I don't think the audience was quite ready for their full out assault. They visited a couple of times after from memory and I caught them whenever I could. Last time was in some dumpy bar in Miami, by mistake. Could not believe my luck. The guy I was with was trying to pick up chicks and I was simply watching Hughie strut his stuff. No Billy by that time. What a wonderful band. RIP Billy and Hughie. You guys were the best. Thanks again.

Brother... All those men on that stage are deceased. Henry Paul I the only living original member. He now fronts a tribute band called the Outlaws. Hughie was the "OUTLAW " with his Ole sidekick , to the left , guitar man Billy Jones. GOD BLESS THESE MEN !

Saw them at SUNY Stonybrook perhaps 76 two dollars, they were an opening act and I had no idea who they were. Really don’t remember much. Many many great college concerts which is why I became a Chef instead a physicist .
I went to high school with these guys, Dave dicks,monty yoho, hueey , Billy, monty and I had married our wife's together in north Carolina. I'm 71 now .
Wow what a great band. Every time they would play in the DC - Baltimore area me and my wife of 40 years were there. Never missed a show. They recently played at a small venue in Crowsville, MD. But I was in the hospital and missed them. I think George Thuragood (check my spelling) was there as well. Green grass and high times forever. I hope they come to town one more time. If so we will be there.

Freddie on Long Gone is really good. All I can say is that one of the best live songs of all time on record is Green Grass from Bring It Back alive. 20+ minutes of pure electricity. The locking and mixing is awesome. 40+ years later. I just took out the record, cleaned it and fired up the turn table. Nothing better then a live LP.
they were popular when I was young but I wasn't into it. Seemed sort of like a Skynyrd rip off.
Totaly different, they are all southern, they know each other, in these days70’s-80’s there were no mobile Phone or computer games so Some started playing music, 38 special, lynrd, outlaws, Molly hatchet and so on
