I lived in Massachusetts in the early 90's when it was announced that The Outlaws would be playing a local club. It was in February and the day of the show there was a huge blizzard. I knew the show would be cancelled but I drove out there about 8 pm, just to check. I walked in and the bartender said the band was already there and the show was going to go on. When they came on stage around 10 pm, I kid you not, there were about 25 people in the place. They came on and played an entire show, just like they were playing to 25,000 instead of 25. They ended the show with this song and after that they set down their instruments they came out to chat with the crowd. I got to meet Huey and chat with him and the other members of the band . It is a memory I will never forget...
That's a cool story, thanks for relaying that.
Hornadayfan dude I'm jealous
Hornadayfan
R.I.P Hughey Thomasson a great talent thank you for the great music
Me too.
Standard issue Hughie.
Videos like this need to be preserved. So later generation's can see that bands actually played instruments and singers could actually sing without electronic help.
Abolutely! True Musicians with Talent and Staying Power that today's so called Music does not have!

One of the best classic rock tunes you will ever hear.
OMG so true brother this song was written for Leonard Skynard
Ur are absolutely correct!!!!
Agree 100%
My fav rock song from all time!
Agreed. I was born in '92 so my love for classic rock was indoctrinated by my dad and some bands/songs slipped through the cracks. The first time I heard this was about two years ago (at 27 years old) and my first thought was: "This is basically Free Bird but even better." Southern rock, heavy guitar emphasis with very extended guitar solos, way longer than most classic rock songs, etc. Blew me away. I listened to it on repeat for days if not weeks after discovering it and it's become a song that will always be in regular rotation.
Watching this again in 2024. I’m 78 female and it still gives me goosebumps. ❣️❣️❣️I was there that night……
Saw them at Rose Arena, Central Michigan University in 1978. One of best concerts I've seen. It was a Homer! Also, my 1st concert at CMU was Frank Zappa. Great 1st concert at CMU, LOL
Age is just another number
Heck yeah those were the best years of our life I still listen to all this music 💖
👍👍👍❤️ 🇺🇸
63 and diggin' it my friend
One of the best southern rock blues jams ever recorded
THE best !!!!!
Hands down... an epic masterpiece.
ua-cam.com/video/VdCgIfXqVvE/v-deo.htmlsi=Y004m6Xtgqy8XRjD. No this is ! This Hughie in his prime, before Billy died
Absolutely a Classic rock song 😊
One of? Not pasted together for radio play but full tilt boogie on stage. Saw them raise a roof or two.
This song no doubt is at the upper echelons of all Southern Rock. Even the vocals are great but the guitar is phenomenal.
They weren't called the Florida Guitar Army for nothing. Saw them in a bar in Raleigh, NC. Awesome band. My favorite Southern Rock band.
That's a low bar.
The words to this song are so dumb tho, they could've only been written by a Good ol' Boy.
I'm a proud ol' ageing rocker (65 in '20) who like many of you....saw a thousand shows and heard a million rock tunes in my day. Would you not agree.....it gets no better than THIS!
Allman Brothers Live at Fillmore 1971
@@gfb46 Good call Garry, can't argue with you on that. God Bless jbeinarizona
It’s up there but there’s some competition: Lynyrd Skynyrd 1977 Free Bird, Santana 1969 Woodstock Soul Sacrifice full version & Dire Straits Basel 1992 Sultans of Swing. All on UA-cam so give them a watch if you haven’t!
I'll be 60 in May and I think the best rock is stuff like this, Skynyrd, Foghat, Blackfoot, Little Feat, Mountain, Allman brothers, Doobie Brothers, and BTO. Sure I like some 80's stuff and even some 90's stuff. But this was my favorite era of rock.
2/6/24
Yes sir, ya gotta be old like us to remember the ORIGINAL “5 Guitar Army” (as I remember them being introduced) to appreciate this classic ! This was my southern guitar rock band of choice by far. I was sandwiched by April Wine of the Canadian north at the time . What an age to grow up in !!! Don’t think those days have ever been, or will be, rivaled again, period !
Hughie's letting everybody join in and take turns, even their sax player, but you can see when he plays he still had that fire in his hands. This was shortly before he passed. RIP Hughie, you are missed tremendously!
Unfortunately , the brightest stars burn the quickest.
Hughie and the other lead player died. This is a new lineup
@@barrywainwright3391 Please watch the video before making that kind of a comment. That is clearly Hughie in the video. He was still alive back in 2007 when this show was done (he died shortly after this date). The other original lead guitarist, Billy Jones, was long gone by suicide when this show occurred so was not a part of the band when Hughie reformed them back in 2005.
I was so lucky to see them at Wild Adventures Valdosta Ga that year. Full Circle was one of the best aongs he wrote, but never got released.
@@barrywainwright3391 Watch the video and read the heading. This is from 2007 when Hughie was still alive. That's Hughie wearing the black hat (he's dressed like he usually was when he played with Lynyrd Skynyrd). Billy Jones was long gone by the time Hughie put the Outlaws back together so obviously he's not there. Hughie died not too long after this show was recorded, so the guys touring nowadays as the Outlaws (under the direction of Henry Paul) are not really the Outlaws. Hughie has to be there for it to really be the Outlaws.
On June 20, 1981 The Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, 38 Special, Marshall Tucker, and The Allman Brothers Band rocked Philadelphia's JFK Stadium in what was billed as The Roundup. Was 100 degrees in the shade. I was about to turn 19 years old and it was without a doubt one of the best days of my life. Looking back, I really had no idea of the greatness that I was witnessing. God bless these incredible musicians for what they brought to the table and for sounding as fresh and incredible today as they did then. And God bless whoever drove me home from that show!
I was at the Round up too and man it was hot as blazes that day. I remember it was a great show with the classic Outlaws lineup…
@@glennmorrell4907 i was also at the round up 15 years old and will never forget it out in the field it was hot as hell, but it was the start of me going to concerts.
Me too
I am from the northeast, saw the outlaws a half dozen times in the 80s. They were epic, RIP Huey, and Billy.
Three guitars- no waiting!
Of all the remarkable musicians born of the southern rock explosion of the early 70's-I think Hughie was the greatest of the great. What an amazing talent. Saw Outlaws 6 or 7 times over the years, thankfully caught a FREE show at Mohegan Sun in CT with this line up- only weeks before Hughies tragic and untimely passing,
Back in the day,('78) you could see the Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, AND .38 Special at an
outdoor show for 8 bucks. Good times.
HELLO ROCKIN ROBIN...........
I counted 5 guitars, plus bass
@@dann.294 - Good eye! This performance was At the volunteer jam concert in Guilford, New Hampshire, to thousand seven featuring Charlie Daniels band, Marshall Tucker Band and The Outlaws. I believe the outlaws played last, thus “GreenGrass” here may have been the last song of the night. I recognize guitarist, Chris Anderson. Bass player, Randy Threet and of course, the legendary Hughie Thomasson (along with double drummers Monte Yoho and David Dix ).
I think the other two “playing along” here are Marshall Tuckers Chris Hicks and i’m pretty sure the young guy was from Charlie Daniels band.
@@dann.294 The original guitar trio of Huggies Thomasson Billy Jones, and Henry Paul were known as the “Florida guitar Army” and gave birth to this southern rock format that was also that of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly, hatchet, Blackfoot, and others.
@@RonandRobin thanks for the info!
Great to see Hughie in action one last time before he went to his reward..... a true legend. One of the best guitar players there ever was.
They were the Florida guitar Army! Why do people criticize a great band that were legends? If you saw them in their prime, you never forgot em..rip huey!!
Nick Lynch I saw them in their prime and I will never forget!
David Steber Ditto....Music Inn, Lenox Mass. '79. a natural outdoor amphitheater, parking was in cow pastures. Those were the days ........
Those who criticize Southern R&R / Classic R&R, The Blues,= IGNORANT MORON DUMB FUCKS !! Also R.I.P. Toy, Tommy, SRV, & all the other greats that have passed. I'm honored & proud to have been around back then & seen them all live.
could NOT have said better myself!!!! Thank you! The Truth! Ty so much!!!
ghost. apear. .Celtic angels. ..battle. not. a. night. owl. my. sis. night bird. sad.
Actual MUSICIAN'S playing actual instruments LIVE ! Those were the days my friends ! We thought they would never end AND THANKS to the OUTLAWS doing it like this they NEVER will END !
Talk about talent! This is by far one of the best jams I've ever
seen.. Hughie and Billy, you are missed so!!
Hughie Thomason, you are missed. This is one hell of a jam! I guess I had better give this video another thumb up.
Absolutely!
Green Grass And High Tides Denise
What happened to Hughie? He was top notch guitarist....
He passed away in 2007
Miss you hughie
One of the great tunes of my teenage years. Many years later, still packs a punch. On the level of Stairway to Heaven and Freebird. Thanks guys!
Don't forget "Whipping Post" and "24 hours at a time" by Marshall Tucker Band.
the difference between this and stairway or freebird, I can still listen to this.
@NO SHOEMAKERS no it's not.those two songs were played out between my ears. I didn't say they were bad. I just don't want to hear them anymore. Anything Outlaws is a good listen to me. Even today
Ha freebird. All time fav.
With you 1971.
Yes, indeed; growing up in Florida in the 1970s was incredible.....The Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jimmy Buffet...and so much more.
I grew up with the outlaws . green grass and hi tides .is an American classic.its a true American classic.never grow tired of it .
I have never seen a band work so hard to please their audience and enjoy them selves at the same time!! Amazing song...
I grew up in the 50's and 60's so I certainly would recognize great guitar music. This has to be the hardest driving guitar set in rock and roll history. I first heard it in 1997 while driving to Atlanta. I could not believe it. After the song ended I was exhausted!
Check out the live video of Molly Hatchets version of Dreams I’ll Never See. Guitar onslaught!
Im 72 and saw them a bunch of times in western Pa. At very types of venues. Theaters, bars, outside of bars old rollerrink. Them boys would play anywhere. First time was at Slippery Rock college in the gym. The band was so happy because their favorite football team had finally won their football game ever. It was the teams second year in the league. BTY it was the Buccaneers.
i love how happy that drummer is, he's having a time of his life
I see 2 drummers
@@dann.294 There's medication for that.
I saw them in 1979 with Molly Hatchet. It was my very first concert. Nothing short of amazing. I will never forget that night.
May 1975, Fresno CA, Selland Arena, I will never forget the “guitar army”. God bless.
I saw The Outlaws in the 70’s. Knew nothing about them going in. One of the tightest bands ever. The place went berserk during this jam.
Florida's Guitar Army! Epic Southern Rock!!
I was at the show and the second song the amps started squealing. They shut them down and announced that they were going to change out the equipment and if we were good they would make it worth our while. Everyone was just watching the change out just waiting for the show to continue. Well they came back and played till 2 o'clock in the morning. One concert I will never forget as long as I live as well as the hundreds of others who were there. Thanks for the great memory guys.
God bless you, Hughie. You are sorely missed but your music will go on forever. The Florida Guitar Army will live on!
I promise you...Hughie is in Heaven...and the Angels are rocking out!!! Tampa Bay 1978...Old times there are not forgotten...
The raw power of 5 badass guitars, two drum kits, and all the rest on stage defines the Outlaws.
I love this song it's been one of my all time favorites since I was a kid and I was born in the 1960s. Real music being played by real musicians that are masters of their art & craft. I wish today's music was still like this. Sometimes when I'm driving around in my car with the windows down and I'm blasting this this song through the stereo's MP3 player I either get approving nods or confused looks. I pity those that give confused looks because they don't know anything about this type of music.
No wife happy life so fucking true
I'm with ya bro..
'61
First heard this blasting out of a neighbor's room in my apartment house in Gettysburg 1976. Brilliant
They just don't make songs like this anymore. Love these kind as you can just sit back and not only enjoy, but get lost in them. Aaaaah well.
Hellecasters - playing at end of video when Outlaws finished - GOOD
STUFF from the '90s!!! Northern Mississippi All Stars - 20teens!
Sturgill Simpson also!
As Greg Kihn (Greg Kihn Band) says "They don't Write em' Like That Anymore"
My Father's favorite song🎸
Remember seeing them at The Riverside in Milwaukee . One of the best gigs I've been to.
One of best southern rock anthems of all time. Gets less recognition than Freebird, but it is still a contender of the highest order. It was an amazing song when it came out, and still is today. #outlaws
Hughie THOMASSON. Guitar VIRTUOSO/ LEGEND!! Thank-You!!(Espeicially The Time You Spent , In Lynyrd!! Saw U Live, With Them, Twice!!Lets Just Say , They Hired U For A Reason!! A DAM, Good Reason!! 🎸🔊 🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶 😁
Viet Nam Vet , Hippy, Business Executive, Guitar Player, Thank God for UA-cam. Just remember all you young guys from 21 on you never change.
+Glenn Canale: With respect, Glenn.....oh I changed A LOT past the age of 21.....THANK GOD, TOO. Heck, if people didn't change after 21....then most of the world would be walking around with the mindset of foolish children. Think about it, bro.
3 guys playing Billy's part... Hughie was the man. I'm sad those days are gone.
This is really pretty much epic. I know it is not the cleanest sound in the world but that is what southern rock is- dirty and raw.
This song could go on forever and nobody would ever go home and people would still there ecstatic.
This by far one of the best jams I have ever seen! A stage of real musicians going at it straight rocking!!!! This is totally bad asss!!!
I had the album on vinyl in 1974. One of my most treasured possessions. I would get smoked up, put on the headphones, lay down on the bed, turn off the light and just let them carry me away. They were so great and their really long jam was so good. Every one was an extremely talented guitarist. SURE WISH I STILL HAD THAT ALBUM. 😪
Loved these guys back in the 80s and 90s. such classic greatness
Music from that era will never be duplicated
From led Zeppelin to the outlaws, Pink Floyd to humble pie and so forth
Jimi Hendrix. Don’t forget the best.
This song reminds me of so many good times in my youth. Im 63 and I rocked back then, and Ill carry on, I dont need a rocking chair, just need to listen to great music that is and has been my favorite and still is!❤😊
"How many guitars do you guys have?"
"ALL OF THEM. Plus, we threw in an extra drummer and a sax for good measure."
Goddam, such an awesome song, tho.
The accordian player was sick that night!
I saw them in the late 70s/early 80s and am going to see them again 40 YEARS LATER!!! I know they arent the same, neither am I. Whoever's playing, my mind will see the original OUTLAWS, MOLLY HATCHET(GATOR COUNTRY!) & 38 SPECIAL( Playing LA County Fair). In the music is the legacy!
What a fun, old school jam. What a loss with Hughie Thomason right after this.
Drank a lot of beer etc to this tune in the late 70s. To this day when I get a new piece of stereo equipment this is the first song that gets played on it. For good luck.
i was born in 2004 and i love this song ! believe it or not i found it by playing on a site called guitar flash which is basically guitar hero for computers.
you should start learning guitar at that age, i started 26yo, wish i had started at 14
the long version came off a two record album called THE OUTLAWS/BRING IT BACK ALIVE album with all performances done in1977.if you can find the album, you'll really will enjoy it.
By far the best Classic Rock tune of all time - Southern or otherwise! I wore out at least 4 LP's (still have the last one), a handful of 8 track tapes and a cassette tape or two all before 1990! Man their first three albums were all primo- Lady in Waiting & Hurry Sundown were perfect follow-ups to the first self titled Album. I saw them at least 5 times in the mid- late 70's, great times. Around 1981 I saw Henry Paul (solo) at a dive bar near the campus of Virginia Tech- it was a pretty bad scene- he was really shit faced, about 3 songs in someone hit him with a beer bottle and it was on, all hell broke loose- what a night.
True guitar teamwork talent in this song. Not easy to pull off.
Takes me fondly back to a time, these short grey hairs, were a foot long and brown!
Damn, and the heavens shake each time these guys play this classic. Awesome!
Esta musica que hermosa., hoy en dia no se hace que lindo rock cuando yo era un bb
I watch this at least 5 times a week. Just makes the spirit feel good.
Played on my wedding
TRY LISTENING THE COWBOY JUNKIES......
One of best jam songs ever!
The cowboy junkies
I stood 50 yards from these guys on the very day this was recorded. High on Bud and gold grass.Coke were it should be.Heaven on earth.😮❤😊
Got the chance to see The Outlaws in Philly back in the '70s', will never forget it. Serious rockers like them never fade away :)
Hoo yah, Bro! Saw them up close and personal at Rogues Gallery in Virginia Beach in 1978! They were awesome!
Kevin-Vet USAF
best band ln us

I hope to see the "Commander of the Florida guitar army" on the other side. God rest you Hughie. I hope my passing is as serene as yours. I have shattered SO many highway speed limits (and a couple of sound barriers) with this song playing.
"I didn't know how may guitars they were gonna need, but I could see how many Guitars they were gonna use!"
I SAW THE OUTLAWS, FOGHAT, AND THE JOHNNY VAN ZANT BAND IN 1980, GREAT SHOW ON A SCHOOL NIGHT....
hell ya!
Darryl Houston Smith thanks my man, peace...
Long Time Ago.. Was My 1st Concert. JAMMED!!!!!!!!
corvettebmw me to.awsome show.still have my tic.stub from the Greensboro nc.show....
I saw the show at the Providence Civic Center, great time to be a kid wasn't it.
They opened for black sabbath at Edmonton coliseum. This song and their performance almost topped sabbath. I never in a million years would know this band if it weren’t for the coming to Edmonton. Its beyond my comprehension how you write a song THIS good
Saw these guys live in 94. Best live show I've ever seen. So much talent it was unbelievable. Every member of the band was a prodigy. R.I.P Huey! You were one of the greatest! Hope you and Toy and Tommy are jamming together somewhere in the sky.
It’s easy to forget with the guitar army jamming there’s also two drum kits banging away. Love it! The sound never gets old.
Freebird and Green grass and HighTides Forever! Best Southern Rock songs ever!
Can't tell you how many miles I've put on the Harley with that song playing...that's livin brother! Finest of times.
Best guitar jam i ever heard SERIOUSLY.......
Remember when the 2 drum set just started taking off.....Long time ago......
I saw the Outlaws in the late 70's when I was 17. The wall of amps,10 feet high and from one side of the stage to the other, 7 guitars, 2 drum sets and 10,000 people having a great time (My shoulders were sore from being tapped so many times. If you don't know what that means ask your parents.) will always be burned into my memory as one of the best concerts I ever saw.
i was 15 when this came out in the 70s and sat playing it over and over and wore it out.. it was a time when i was just getting the groove of playing my guitar...man all the parts i wanted to play at one lmao.... was a turning po9int in my playing .
Theres two drummers and by the way the soundman did a great job for an outside concert with so many guitars,
+Norman Miller Thank you, I had just put new batteries in the camera mic!
+Norman Miller two drummers suck and the sound man ain't worth a fuck
hater's gonna hate, troll
Call this trolling? Pedestrian! Go practice some more and come back...
Y'know, big words aside, like "superlative," this brings such joy. Thanks so much for posting, "saskatchawan." ~ S ~
Huey's still killin' it, decades after I saw The Outlaws perform last millennium, in Cincinnati Ohio at Riverfront Coliseum, back in the late 70's, with Marshall Tucker and Molly Hatchett opening the show. Florida guitar army, indeed!
Back on Christmas Day '20 while just kicking back until Christmas dinner. What better way than to dig on the Florida Guitar Army? As I watch these guys for the umpteenth time here....it's so obvious that they are truly "into it" and are not faking their groovin'.....like too many older bands. These guys were all having a friggin' ball contributing to this monster jam.
i had the pleasure of meeting Hughie back in the early 80s. i was a friend of a guy that grew up with Hughie down in florida n every time the outlaws came to town he would get free tickets n backstage passes. at the 1st concert where i got to sit on the edge of the stage i had the misfortune of going back stage and helping myself to what was left of a bottle jack Danials. shortly after the band ended their set and came backstage....well Hughie stepped over to the table, picked up the empty bottle and screamed at the top of his lungs "who is the m.....r F....r who drank my jack??!!" my friend larry stepped forward and pointed me out. i thought i was dead. but ol Hughie broke out in a huge laugh slapped me on the back then even signed my shirt. gotta say he was one hell of a great guy n he is sorely missed.
Some o f these comments crack me up.....Hughie...you are missed EVERY day. I am so glad I have your music to carry me thru the rest of my life!!!! Billy too R.I.P. florida's original guitar army.....Thank you for your Beautiful Music and Harmonies....And Chris, you got a style all your own (always have) You Rock!
being born and raised in socal and listening to what was the best rock and roll radio station ever .THE MIGHTY MET KMET 94.7 R.I.P. the d.j.s called this song green grass and high times. maybe to much mary jane?
Greatest song ever. Loved it the day I first heard it, love it now.
Same here. That 1st album is my #1 fav.
Join the club
Saw the Outlaws back in 1982 during a big 2 foot snow storm at the Rutger's state college in New Brunswick, didn't think the show would be played but we went anyway and I guess about 100 people showed up. What a great show they put on and we even got front row seating woohoo.
I saw these guys live several times , but this is the absolute best version of this song , 6 guitars , a monster sax player , dual drummers , the only way this could get better , if it was in my back yard , long live southern rock .
sluf1963 What could possibly go wrong?
I saw wet willie at the minnesota state fair back in about 72, 16 years old, I had my first girl, first car, first job. What an exciting time in life!
One of the best guitar jam sessions of all time!! Rest in peace Leonard Synard, and god bless the rest of you from Bella and Norm in Vancouver, we love it!!
🎹🎸🥁🎻🎤📻i love Lynyrd Skynyrd!!! 🦅
Skynyrd and more specifically Ronnie Van Zant helped the Outlaws get signed to Arista Records. He told their A&R guy in so many words "If you don't sign this band you're crazy".
Lynyrd Skynyrd
WOW!!!!! That is absolutely AWESUUUUUUMMMM!!!!
GREEN GRASS AND HIGH TIDES FOREVER!
Damn good stuff! Lot of Gibson guitars!
Me: How many guitars do you have?
Outlaws: Yes.
LOL
One of the most overused memes of all time.
Boooooooo.
With all the crazy stuff and not nonsense what side you're on guitar heals all wounds
this was brand new on the radio when i ran away from home back in 76 when i was 12 now i'm 51 and still love it like it was brand new. they don't play it anymore on the radio but when i hear it running away from home seems like it just happened yesterday
Richard Mcginnis they play it on my radio, first saw them way back in 1976 supporting Little Feat, Manchester, England
little feat, dixie chicken, good song willin' good song. the radios play the same songs over and over but never play the stuff that brings back the past
Amazing, saved to my favorites list.
A BIG truck couldn't carry that much rock and roll!
BIGOGRE1958
On my top ten list of the greatest rock songs ever.
I've never been to Georgia but listening to this song makes me feel like I'm cruising east on highway 82 out of Columbus at 7pm on a gorgeous summer evening.
It could have been a hundred other highways. I just picked that one to use as an example.
Never Ever get tired of watching this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Always good to see a Happy Drummer who obviously loves his gig !
Hughie is sorely missed. The Outlaws aren’t the Outlaws without him!
Holy Shit!!! Doesn't get better than that. God bless you John Taggart....Bridge St. San Gabriel, Ca is always Rocking because of you.
This is the most totally mind blowing guitar freak out EVER!!!
Saw these guys twice as a teen in the 1970's Boston. Great live band.
This by far one of the great jams. The way all blend together to make this song rock. I put on soul train and turn off the sound, then I play this song. Made can they dance to good old southern rock.
I rode mine ! This was Bike week I think....Hughie! we miss you! Not the guitar Army without you!
This was Volunteer jam! Awesome! Chris Hicks, Dave Muse and Clay Cook from Marshall Tucker (Clay would soon join The Zac Brown Band) and Chris Wormer from Charlie Daniels Band! With Outlaw Chris Anderson, it was a 3-Chris jam! KILLER! I live for these jams! Hicks was a former Outlaw too!
& Hellecasters at the end!
David Muse from FIREfrickinFALL!!! Another greatly underrated band.
Thank you so much for posting this. I knew Chris Worker from the CDB. Now I know the others. I will always be a fan of Southern Rock. I'be only had the pleasure of seeing these guys once back in the late 80's. They opened for Charlie in Homestead, FL. I have all the album's on vinyl. Except for Dixie Highway, the newest one. Henry wrote a great tune on it called Southern Rock Will Never Die with Tommy Crain's brother Billy. God bless Hughie, Charlie, Duane, Toy, Taz, and everyone we've lost over the decades.
