Hi besides the beach, sugar loaf and Christ the redeemed you should also check it out park lage,Tijuca forest ,Maua square ,and take the bondinho to Santa Teresa a charming and historic neighborhood on the hills.
I love Rio. I'm excited for you guys to experience it. I was mugged there once though, on the avenue opposite Copacabana beach. No harm done, luckily, and it gave me a good travel story.
I don't know how long you will be in Brazil. So far, you haven't seen even 5% of what the country offers. In the city of Rio there is a lot to be seen such neighborhood of Santa Tereza, district of Lapa, Museu do Amanhã and much more. I advise you to visit the cities of Paraty, Penedo and the mountainous region of Rio. Even in the state of São Paulo there is much to see, such as Campos do Jordão, Ilhabela, Maresias, Ubatuba, etc. You need to visit the cities in the south of the country Gramado, Florianópolis, Joinville, Camboriú considered our Dubai. In the Northeast Porto de Galinhas, Lençóis Maranhenses, Fortaleza, Canoa Quebrada and Salvador. In the central region of Bonito and Caldas Novas. I believe that you will realize, that Brazil is not only Rio and Amazon.
Alright, now you're in Rio: try and go to Floresta da Tijuca one day and to Ipanema beach. In Ipanema, get to Casa da Feijoada to have some of the excellent famous bean stew. And then get to Mureta da Urca to have some beer and watch the sunset.
I always enjoy taking the ferry to Niteroi from the Praça XV de Novembro. Cheap and you can grab a couple of beers and stand out in the front and watch your new city approach.
Hey guys, I live in Rio and there’s a lot to do here for shure! Beaches by day and Lapa at night, also I highly recommend Arraial do Cabo or Ilha Grande (2 hours from Rio but worth it)
Tourist places usually don't have their names translated. They are known by their original names. Which makes it even easier for tourists to find them when visiting the citys. If they use the names as you suggested, few Brazilians will be able to help them (most of us don't speak English). But if they ask for Cristo Redentor even if their pronunciation is very wrong, everyone will understand.

You guys should definitely check out destinations like: Ouro Preto and Mariana, the historical cities of Minas Gerais state; Bonito in Mato Grosso do Sul state; Salvador in Bahia state and Natal in Rio Grande do Norte state, among many other nice touristic spots. As a carioca myself, my personal recommendations inside the city is to try the Pedra do Telégrafo hike, visit the Rio Downtown area thoroughly and take a peak into far away and almost wild beaches of Prainha and Reserva. From the mainstream attractions I would definitely not miss the Botanical Garden, Sugar Loaf Mountain, Ipanema Beach, and the historical buildings around the Cinelândia subway station (most of them you can enter as they are cultural institutions). Also, do not miss the new harbor area you can get with the tram running through the city centre. Another interesting thing to do it to take side trips: awesome destinations are Arraial do Cabo and Búzios, some amazing beachside cities and Petrópolis, a mountainous historical city with a colder weather.
You should head to Florianopolis, Santa Catarina -- beautiful beaches, beautiful landscape, clean, safer, you will like it. It would be nice to hear a comparison between the two experiences, Sao Paulo vs Rio! Be safe, and have fun.
