Hi Georgia! Social drinking for me was in my 20’s too but we don’t really have the pub culture in the US but plenty of bars. I’ve been watching your journey and you are doing so good….almost 6 years sober for me but I still take it one day at a time💜😊💜
I used to work as a messenger in the city of London for an investment bank and some of the pubs around Smithfield market were open for market traders early in the morning, I found out about this this pretty quickly and would often have a beer for breakfast just to straighten myself out for work, even in my twenties all the warning signs were there!
I remember the last orders it was 3 pints of Snakebite each and a carry-out from the bar that cost us a small fortune usually 6 tins of mcewans or tartan special back in the day and a bottle of rum or vodka or sometimes a bottle of whisky then stagger down the road in the dark to my mates' garage and still be drinking til about 5 in the morning..we always knew we'd not go home without a drink but that bell ringing at the end of the night would put the mindset in chaos like the need to have a few more even though we'd be pissed anyway it takes complete control over your senses
The worst time was 2.30 closing in the afternoon on a Sunday. Ended up driving to the nearest Asian run corner shop to buy cans of Kronoburg. Then wait for the pubs to open again at 6 pm.
Hi Steve, Some people would still buy it at £10 a pint. It's sad when you look back through sober eyes!. It's a mad rush to guzzle as much as you can before throwing out time, sad but true. Great video & and I hope you're well 👍
That was me too! Buying multiple pints for myself as if my life depended on it. What did I think was going to happen in that last-half hour? An alien invasion? That the girl of my dreams would walk in and sit on my lap? Utter insanity.
As a full time drinker I used to hate Christmas when all the part timers would clog up my local. I petitioned my landlord to give us regulars an express lane.
Used to rush to the bar, until I became a fully fledged alcoholic. Meaning that my fridge was invariably stocked with alcohol, ready to be consumed once I had returned from the pub. I guess where drink availability was concerned, I was a very organised alcoholic.
I think the 'ding ding' is the mental reminder that you havent got as drunk as you wanted to, or the fear that you might sobre up before you get home, because you might stick around with your friends until the pub shuts but wihtout a drink in your hand, either way its the easily triggered anxiety of not being able to carry on once you've started. If we weren't so casual in our culture about drinking this wouldn't be a common problem. I moved to Romania and there's so many people my age who have 1 alcoholic drink and thats it. I wish that control came so easily to me.
I’ve been on both sides of the bar rush. When out for a drink as soon as the last orders shout went up if you looked around someone from every group was rushing to the bar. When I was doing my post registration course at the Royal Marsden I got a job in a pub in Sutton and there were times I was actually scared when serving and the last orders went. The sheer aggression was total madness and there were times when you’d get threats made if you didn’t serve them. You are right, nurses loved a night out. There was a club that run 999 nights every month and they were always jumping with folk from the emergency services. You had to show your I’d to get in. You’d book your off duty as often as you could to make sure you could go and the sheer amount of booze consumed was madness. We all worked very hard in high stress jobs but my god we played hard too.
Yes! I used to go there. It was somewhere in London. I think there was also a place called Sam’s (possibly owned by Samantha Fox?) where the nurses got shots for 20p-might even have been free. This was late 80s and early 90s. My memory is a bit blurry. To beat the “last orders” cut off The routine was Pub until 2300. Nightclub until 0300. I have to admit I didn’t really understand how toxic alcohol is until I saw the impact on my friends. I’m sure the Marsden has given you a good insight. In your 20s and 30s the body recovers pretty well. Now in my 50s I see the real harm hitting my friends and colleagues. Not so much liver disease. My friends/colleagues have had: death from heart attacks, atrial fibrillation, pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer, oesophageal cancer, peptic ulcers and depression. Alcohol has probably been a contributing factor. It’s a shame as I enjoy a drink-but none of the above are attractive. If you avoid the above and get to old age then you have the increased risk of dementia to look forward to. Sorry to put a dampener on things. My "Que Sera, Sera “ attitude has changed. I now focus on my physical and mental health.
Last week I charged to the bar at last orders. I’m skinny so snuck to the front past all the drunks. I loudly asked the barmaid (I know her well anyway) for a glass of tap water with plenty of ice and a slice of lemon. I got some death looks-and s few wry grins.
Must be honest I was usually long gone by then seldom made last orders. Looking back it was rather daft some of my shenanigans.... Like football on TV. I'm a big Liverpool supporter and as such used to success, so cup finals were a norm. FA cup final was at the ludicrous hour of 5pm, so quite why i was quaffing beer at 9am i know not as i missed the game or, i "saw" it but was watching two TVs. In the social club I used to drink in, in Jarrow, a butcher and his son would come in about forty minutes before closing and order eight pints and they would be served them on their own silver tray that was kept behind the bar.
@@stevencurry215 Quite possibly Steve, I would appreciate it if you would elaborate more in future posts about the damage to your own physical health, most importantly your liver.
Another example of dependency was a boozer I used to drink in in South Shields which stayed open until one on a weekend, they used to offer take out pint cartons as if the two extra hours of drinking wasn't enough to get your fill, I dare say its still common practice in some drinking emporiums.
@@stevencurry215 I do Steve and I will say that a massive part of the drinking epidemic is down to bar staff and corner shops turning a blind eye and serving people who are clearly drunk regardless.
In the journalism game we used to refer to it as a 'wet industry' and that was always our excuse to quaff numerous complimentary glasses of wine at a press launch or interview a subject over a few pints at lunchtime which would often extend to three hours or more... as it was simply the done thing. Grew up in Yorkshire. Drinking in the pub aged 16 to 19 was a macho endeavour, a competition ..so how much can you drink without vomiting. And like you, last orders was 3 or 4 pints each. Just hold them down.
Rush to the bar at last orders and then buy 3. I also used to arrange to meet my drinking buddy at 8.30 but I'd be there at 7.30 just so I could get one in.
I have rushed for last orders on occasion and probably will again, but I quite often leave the pub before closing time, just depends on my mood. I get your point, but what gets me is why the British go mad with alcohol on Friday and Saturday evenings. I much prefer going to pubs on Sundays through to Thursdays. It's much more relaxing and enjoyable.
Hi David thank you for your message..agreed re the weekend.. I used to work a lot of weekends and much preferred the pub in the week Please subscribe & keep in touch 👍
Okay, thanks. Sorry you've had a bad experience with alcohol. Like I say, Fridays and Saturdays in a lot of pubs can be horrendous. In fact Friday just gone I was in a Wetherspoon's and I got so fed up waiting whilst other rude customers jumped the "queue" that I decided to leave about 8pm and got the train home.
@stevencurry215 Haha depends on the drinker, for me the weekends were the morning till the night, often morning to morning! It wasn't part time drinking 😂 hate looking back on it.
@stevencurry215 it's mental how you do think it's normal. I had a strange notion I was one step ahead. That's the booze for you, fooling you. I have already subscribed. I feel so good, but I'm under no illusion. One day at a time.
As a person in control of my alcohol consumption (though I spend most of my twenties trying to ruin that control) I will say it’s not a question of being in control or not. It’s the culture surrounding alcohol that is utterly corrupted. When I had to bring my drinking to a halt I still went out, and I had to present a comprehensive argument as to why I didn’t want a beer or a glass of wine. The alcohol culture here in Denmark is insane. And the other problem is the availability of alcohol. You can buy it practically everywhere and you can buy it around the clock. And it’s not overly expensive. Insanity. I wish we had designated state-run stores for alcohol sale like they do in every other Scandinavian country.
Great message your quote “present a comprehensive argument as to why you don’t drink “ People are visibly shocked when I say I’ve not had alcohol for a few years 👍
My story is a weard one of pure desperation, I wake quick wash most times use facial wipes, get my clothes on coat in my bedroom leve flat go Tesco because local shops know my face, bye 2 bottles of lucazde bottle vodka go same place behind this church tip out most of the lucazde fill with vodka so my son thinks im byeing pop, go back to flat and drink all day on my own in my room do this every day I know I'm going to die soon my liver my ankles swelled up a month ago please god help me ..
Cathy..listen..you can get sober i promise you. Its not easy, take each day as it comes and see your doctor. We've all been there and we've all survived, you can do it cathy.❤
I did also most of my Mates did its a culture but harmless for many and having a lock in was even better as your felt it was naughty . But when the Pubs changed to opening all day things changed and then thats when I started going down hill as had not restrictions then . We have to accept that Alcohol has been around from day 1 and the majority of people do not have a problem with it but we do thats why we are on here , When I first came into recovery after a couple of Months I was going round to every one they have a problem with Alcohol even if they just a glass a wine once a week with their Sunday Lunch , But over time I relised it was me with the problem , You can analize it until the Pigs come home but for me its a case of keeping it simple , But Yes Steve I can relate with you all the way . Just do not pick up that first drink , keep connected as we can not do this on our own

@@stevewood4519 I would say it’s a lot easier to get alcohol if it’s delivered & people will suffer in silence more because they don’t need to leave the house The shops don’t care ..its shareholders profits that are paramount 🙏
I must also add the stupid mistakes when drunk with buying stuff you don't need many a time I've got parcels delivered from the likes of e-bay that I can't remember ordering or buying gifts for folk you've never even met from Facebook that live at the other end of the country just throwing money away like it's nothing but at the time you obviously think you're a right charm with the drink and wake up wondering how your bank balance is nearly empty

Great message your quote “present a comprehensive argument as to why you don’t drink “
People are visibly shocked when I say I’ve not had alcohol for a few years

Last orders....."3 Pints Of Stella Please"
That was me a few years ago ..what a waste ..
Just do not pick up that first drink , keep connected as we can not do this on our own
Thank you for this great message..you are spot on …some people can drink - we cannot..simple

@ people will drink what they want simple as that
@@evanBrett95 yes, it’s a decision. No one makes someone drink or not.
Yep that was me also steven its was an addiction thing with me come closing time i would order 2 pints and i would have a full pint infront of me i would chuck it down i remember one time i got a pint of guiness and instead of letting it settle i drank it oh boy did i pay for it i got sick all over the place in the toilet in the pub here in ireland i even got sick in the hall way going out the door the drink culture has really taken over here in ireland only last week end a romanian driver killed a 16 year old boy he was drink driving and he left the seen he and his family only arrived in ireland a month ago it happened in the early hours of last sunday morning he was buried during the week.We here in ireland are drinking too much we dont have enough police to deal with it.Its a shame
@@mickdunne981 Hi Mick I wonder why the drinking has got worse…I think it has here too…. Then you read some press reports about People drinking less …. I don’t believe it. I’m with you..I think it’s getting much worse tbh

Do you think that the big food delivery companies make it easier for alcoholics to get access to booze delivered straight to their door, should they have more responsibility if they see a steady stream of alcohol going to one address?
@@stevewood4519 I would say it’s a lot easier to get alcohol if it’s delivered & people will suffer in silence more because they don’t need to leave the house

Steve, many of my comments on recent videos of yours are being deleted, i know it's not you, but it's frustrating.

I've read that YT delete comments with certain words in & then become YT police on such channels.
If I comment on 10 or so channels, it's happening on two currently...yours & another.
Very frustrating, especially when a meaningful comment is written.

It's only when it's on the subject matter, which of course 99% of comments are...crazy
I quit going to bars. I was too lazy. I would just hole up in my TV room and watch old movies and drink.
I liked the bars in central London but i also enjoyed drinking at home ..totally messed me up.
Sheer madness…..Is it ‘unconscious’ behaviour? I think it’s some misplaced tribal pattern and also the need to blank out some unresolved issues/thoughts/trauma.Has been with me I know.
