  • www.nramuseum.org Chuck Connors famed gun from the TV series The Rifleman (1958). John Popp joins Phil Schreier, Senior Curator at the National Firearms Museum, for a special edition of the Curators Corner. This edition features the Winchester 1892 Saddle Ring that will travel with Schreier to Las Vegas for the 2010 SHOT Show and the Wally Beinfield Antique Arms Show. This rifle was shot about twelve times to open every episode of the long-running television series, and it has a uniquely large lever loop that Connors used for twirling his firearm.

    My Mother's Uncle owned a Semi Pro Basketball Team, the Paterson Crescents from Paterson, NJ. Chuck played for them. When Her Uncle passed in the seventies , Chuck sent a beautiful Flower Arrangement and Letter to His Wife. Total Class Act.

    Actually , there were three rifles. Two were authentic Winchester Model 1892 rifles, while the third was an El Tigre, a replica that was made in Spain. Two additional Winchesters featuring the large loop lever were made some years later for Chuck Connors to carry in his public appearances.The four original 1892's are now in private collections and no one knows what happened to the Spanish copy. (I am quoting an article that appeared in Guns of the Old West Magazine).

      Most of those western series used the model 92 even though the story line usually takes place 10 years or more before that model would have been developed.

    Grew up watching THE RIFLEMAN. The 1892 Winchester caliber 44-40 carbine with a standard 20-inch barrel used on the set of The Rifleman appeared with two different types of levers. The backwards, round-D-style loop was used in the early episodes. Sometimes the rifle McCain uses has a saddle ring (the purpose of this ring is to allow the rider to tie the gun with a lanyard, to secure it in the scabbard). The lever style later changed to a flatter lever (instead of the large loop) with no saddle ring.
    McCain fires 12 shots from his rifle during the opening credits: seven shots in the first close-up and five more as the camera switches to another view. The blank cartridges are shorter than standard cartridges, so the magazine will hold more of the blanks. The soundtrack contained a dubbed 13th shot, to allow the firing to end with a section of the theme music. The rifle was chambered for the 44-40 W.C.F. (Winchester Center Fire) cartridge, which was chambered in both revolvers and rifles.[5] He could supposedly fire off his first round in three-tenths of a second, which certainly helped in a showdown.

    Chuck was a good minor league baseball player. He played in the majors just two seasons-one for his beloved Dodgers and another for the Cubs in 1951. He also played major league basketball for the Boston Celtics in the mid 40's and is given credit for being the first player to smash a backboard. He was also drafted by the Bears.

    Nobody ever mentions the most important feature of the weapon; what caliber is it? I see below mention of 44-40, which is what I was expecting since it was the most popular cal for Winchesters during the late 1800s. Nobody has ever mentioned the fact taht an 1892 is just a bit too modern for a series taking place in the 1870s or 80s, but nobody would notice. The appearance is identical.

    I have seen several inquiries about purchasing a rifle like the one used by Chuck Connors in The Rifleman. There is a fellow named Mike DiMuzio who makes exact duplicates of the famous rifle for sale. He learned from Moe Hunt, who made the rifles for Chuck Connors. DiMuzio is also very proficient with the rifle and makes appearances at gun shows where he gives demonstrations. Check out Mike on Facebook or his Website, The Rifleman's Rifle, for details on purchasing an actual working model of the gun.

    Don't curator's usually handle historical artifact's with gloves?

    • @topbreak38
      @topbreak38 6 років тому +3

      I typed up a book explaining the situation but realized most readers probably wouldn't care.
      Long story short: depending on how they classified the piece and the handling practices the museum chooses to use, he may be doing everything he's supposed to.
      A few years ago, cotton gloves were standard; now it's powder-free latex. Standards vary and change.
      If they are doing things like taking it to shows or removing hammer springs, they are also probably giving it a regular cleaning and oiling so the damage done here is next to none. Damage can accumulate over time, but it appears to be in good condition and, as long as they keep handling to a minimum, the rifle should outlive us all.

      cartage america 44 caliber bullet w/ 40 grains of powder 44/40 The end number would indicate how much powder was in the casing, I don't recall if this was black powder or smokeless. You can still buy 44 special ammo today.

    • @hokanut
      @hokanut 9 років тому +2

      +Joseph M 1897 is when Americans started converting to smokeless. The 40 grains did denote the amount of black powder charged in the 44/40 cartridge. 40 grains of smokeless would have left Chuck in pieces when the rifle exploded. Modern powder charges for the 44/40 vary in charge from 4.5 to 17.5 grains depending on the manufacturer and bullet weights ranging from 160 to 240 grain.

    • @dukeman7595
      @dukeman7595 9 років тому

      hokanut Exactly that's what I said "Black powder," however, the cartridge, 44/40 is still called a 44/40 but not loaded w/ black powder of course. As stated, the 44 was the bullet size, the 40 denoted the grains of black powder.
