Harry James wearing his safari suit and sandals and socks on national TV. Harry was the man. I miss the Labor Day Telethons. It meant summer was over, school was starting. One last bitter sweet moment for many reasons.
There hasn’t ever been a telethon that captivated people and touched the hearts of so many people like the MDA telethon and it’s because of Jerry Lewis. Like him or hate him he cared and made this happen.
He was a pretty talented musician on drums and trumpet but that era was big bands and comedy. He leaned more towards comedy because that’s what drew an audience in his era
Loved Jerry Lewis's old moves & what a lead role he played in the fight against M.D. Still my favorite comedians of all times are, W.C. Fields, Gracie Burns, and Robin Williams. "I'd rather be in Philadelphia, ah yesss".
I think what you're hearing is what he could do - I've wondered why he didn't work on learning to play for real. I'll modify if I find out otherwise. He was actually a real decent singer in his youth.
I think if Jerry had done lip exercises & otherwise practiced everyday we'd also know him as a trumpet great & maybe had given Harry James ALMOST a run for his money on the '75 MDA Telethon.
@@brassplyer Jerry was not a trumpeter by any stretch of the imagination. He was merely playing random notes, like someone who cannot play the piano hitting random keys rapidly and calling it jazz improv. Not slamming him, it's just a fact. I have played trumpet for decades and though Jerry looks as if he's doing something musical, trust me, he's not, though it may sound impressive to the non-trumpeters here.
@@terrystrand James was the very best! I’ve seen him with my father. He played at a ballroom and I got to meet him and several of the other band members. Never forget it. People don’t realize what a talented trumpeter James was. He started at a very young age and his father was a bandleader. Started playing trumpet at around age 8 and leading a band at the age of 12 years old. He had the best tone and many have tried to copy it.

Best of the big band era Jerry was really a talented guy. He played drums really good.
RIP Harry James, and now RIP Jerry Lewis. Beautiful upload worth it's weight in gold!

I've never heard anyone sound more like Harry James than Jerry Lewis. He's got him down pat!
I miss the telethons and Jerry. Rest In Peace, Jerry.

Jerry's sound on that trumpet was pretty good. He had potential.

2 Beautiful Trumpets. Jerry had some potential, if he wanted to go in that direction Musically.
Shouldn't be even on the same stage as Harry, but a great humanitarian fund raiser.
People don’t know how hard it is until they pick one up. Harry was the best and untouchable.

Okay Gracie's stage name, Gracie Allen, she was George's wife.
Wow
I wonder just how well Jerry could play the trumpet if he really wanted to and not clown around.

James was a trumpet god... believe me... Lewis was at most equal to a high school band trumpet player. He's not fit to carry Harry's trumpet case.
