    Great reaction and analysis to a fantastic Pentatonix piece! Not sure if you knew this already, but this song and arrangement earned them their second Grammy Award win for "Best arrangement, instrumental or A Capella."

    I truly love this group. Each one of them are talented enough to “ lead” but instead they all work together. They each have a claim to fame, but there’s no out of control egos in this bunch of amazing artists. I am awed by their ethics, doing what’s best for the music and the group. Just a fabulous bunch of people as well as extremely talented artists!

    Pentatonix's audio editor is Ed Boyer, and he is as much of a genius at what he does as #Pentatonix is at what they do. He's a large part of the reason the balance is always right.

    Appreciating your viewpoints toward what makes this arrangement work, and how respectful you are of the artistry

    It's my understanding that Avi brought the piece to Ben Bram (PTX's longtime producer/arranger) and that the two of them did the basic arrangement. Avi really put his college major of opera (bass/basso profundo) and classical voice to work in this one, and as has already been said, they won their 2nd Grammy for this. Here's Ben Bram accepting the award: ua-cam.com/video/vF0Hla9ai5I/v-deo.html

      Actually Kevin and Avi were talking about it and then brought it to Bram. As roommates they discussed a lot of different ideas. A lot of good info about PTX can be found by googling Kevin's interviews. At the time a lot of Christian magazines interviewed Kevin by himself. I don't remember which it was but I will try to find it.

    🤩Your excitement got me excited....And I've seen this SO MANY times through the years! 🤩 They won their second Grammy for this arrangement.

    something I've always said about Pentatonix in the context of other acapella groups is in how they arrange their pieces.
    to put it briefly, while other groups tend to make the pieces work for them and spotlight or showcase their amazing vocalists, Pentatonix tends to do it the other way around, making their voices work for the piece. Rarely do they ever showcase or spotlight - it may be inevitable in some pieces with solo singing or when it comes to high and low notes, but it never seems to be the point. it's always about how their voices work with the piece, rather than how the piece can showcase their voices.
    you'll never hear a whistle note despite the fact that I'm pretty certain both kirsten and mitch can do them, and you'll never hear a subharmonic despite the fact that I'm pretty certain both avi and matt can do them.

      Nicely said! Yes, both Mitch and Kirstie can do awesome whistle notes...even a whole lyric line in one...there a video of both of them having a little competition out there somewhere. I do know Avi can do overtones, but I'm not sure about Matt being able. I could be wrong about Matt capabilities, though.

    • @margretrosenberg420
      @margretrosenberg420 Місяць тому +1

      @@GwenneddIn this interview, the trio and Kevin demonstrate that they also know how to do overtone singing: ua-cam.com/video/FKm5zNC-maE/v-deo.html (the question about overtone singing begins at 17:11, but the whole interview is worth watching). If Matt wants to do overtone singing, he has four people who can teach him. It isn't hard. I found a UA-cam tutorial and even I can do it, and my voice is nowhere close to Pentatonix quality. You can find the tutorial here: ua-cam.com/video/w42DQoZ-z_c/v-deo.html
      As for whistle notes, Mitch has admitted that he does them wrong. They're supposed to be on an out-breath, but Mitch does them on the in-breath. I don't understand anything about whistle notes, but apparently it's easier to do them on an in-breath, but it can also damage your voice. There's another video I saw that had all current members of Pentatonix attempting whistle notes and only Kirstin got them right. I was somewhat surprised that Kevin didn't do better.

      Thank you for articulating so clearly what I've been trying to say for years. So many superfans of Home Free and Voiceplay always say how much better those groups are because they have the super awesome basses that can go so low. But just because you can, doesn't mean it's appropriate for the song - I find it used like a gimmick with little regard for placement. It should be used as a tool to accentuate a particular section, not be the focus.

    You mentioned Avi’s base not being really low, but low enough to serve the music. Reactors tend to forget that PTX is a touring pop group. They all have to maintain their voices almost all year long. Bases in particular don’t always have the ability to hit super low notes on a daily basis. PTX arranges their music very intelligently so that it can be performed live as well as it’s performed on video. Loved your reaction!🩷

    Avi has the clearest sounding low notes I've ever heard. Most low bass sounds are gritty or rumbley.

    I really like how you play the whole song through and then go back to the beginning and evaluate. I'd love to hear you do a reaction on Emma Kok with Andre Rieu, Voila. Listen to the intro Andre does to get an understanding of this beautiful singer. Voila came in 2nd in the Eurovision competition this yr. although it wasn't Emma who sang it there.
