Song with no words, done by a group with no instruments = Grammy #2

The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, written by Tchaikovsky, is a part of The Nutcracker, a ballet that is definitely associated with Christmas. Your delight as you watched and listened to the Pentatonix video was akin to finding a small, and unexpected, present hiding in the Christmas tree.

This was their second Grammy win for the arrangement of this song I believe. I loved how people have described it before - a song with no words sung by a band with no instruments!

This one will blow your mind considering there are NO WORDS / LYRICS. That is how Top Level Amazing Pentatonix is!!! They don't NEED words. They don't need instruments. They don't need percussion. They don't need a choir. They don't need a band. They ONLY need each other and their voices and they can do ANYTHING !!! EPIC !!!!!

A song with no words…performed by a group with no instruments…equals Grammy #2…Tchaikovsky must be turning over in his grave. The Nutcracker Suite is a ballet usually with a full orchestra. The “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” is a dream sequence dance.

Not sure how true this is, but I heard that this song was Avi's idea, which he brought to Ben Bram and they arranged most of it. Avi's operatic training in college shines, especially in his brief solo.

You owe it to yourself to watch The Nutcracker Suite ballet at least once in your life, it's such a classic and the music is truly beautiful and timeless. I am a genX Metalhead who loves most music, but one of my most precious childhood memories is Dancing In The Nutcracker as a Sugar Plum Fairy😊 before I gave up ballet and moved on to other things LOL and my mom was truly a ballerina, in the 50's she was a dancer for the Colorado Ballet Company and over her career played many different parts in the nutcracker, I still have her old ballet slippers in shadow boxes... thanks for the memories!

It’s a Christmas song because the ballet plot takes place at Christmas time. Cities with valley companies, or parents with little dancers definitely consider it a christmas tradition. The tubes is used on background music services so you have heard it in shops. It’s used in movies and TV shows the sane way. .

Definitely a Christmas song. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is a song from the ballet The Nutcracker, a Christmas ballet. No lyrics because its a traditional ballet - all orchestra. You've likely heard the tune from one of many commercials, tv shows, movies, and other media that have featured the song over the decades. The Sugar Plum Fairy is a character of the ballet and this specific piece plays during her solo. Think of the Sugar Plum Fairy as a fairy godmother - she is a beautiful, benevolent fairy who guides and helps the leading character, a child named Clara. I highly recommend checking out a production of The Nutcracker this Holiday season! Its a captivating story about a child's imagination on Christmas Eve night. You can find many different productions of the ballet online but I recommend either:
    Nutcracker: The Motion Picture (1986)
George Balanchine's The Nutcracker (1993) - this guest stars a very young Macaulay Culkin btw!
I grew up with both and both are dear to my heart.

They also did the Waltz of the Flowers from the Nutcracker, but there isn’t a MV for it. Only a “Yule Log” audio recording, from 5-6 years ago. It’s also beautiful to listen to on your own time even if you don’t do a reaction to it.

It’s always great to find a PTX song that has slipped through the cracks! (It’s usually not one of the Grammy winners, though.) Happy you enjoyed it, happy Messer is on the schedule and happy you’re back. It looks like you had a fun vacation. Enjoyed your reaction, as always. Peace …

Only PTX a group that does not use instruments can win a grammy for a song that has no words. ((From Wikipedia "The "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" is a dance for a ballerina. It is the third movement in The Nutcracker pas de deux. This pas de deux is from Act 2 of the 1892 ballet The Nutcracker.")

I love your reaction! The Sugar Plum Fairy is a character in Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker, traditionally performed around Christmas time... This is her theme, to which she dances. It's a simple tinkly tune, as from a music box. There are no words for it. PTX make an outstanding effort to bring it to life!

Yes they won a Grammy as an acapella group doing an instrumental written for Orchestra and ballet. Yes. They are gods. (The chart is part of the Nutcracker by Tschikovsky; I've played the Trombone parts many times) Their creativity knows no bounds.

This is usually a light and happy lyrical song. So the contrast with how this was arranged and filmed is even more striking. This is a ballet that one usually attends at Christmas.

Many of us messer fans love Halfway the most. Me, because its his most ballady song and thats where Mitch's voice shines the most imo. I'm curious to see if you like it as much since you tend to favor his songs that have good production and beat drops. I'm looking forward to it. Also ptx just released a new greatest hits Christmas album with 8 new tracks. So plenty to still react to. Plus i feel theres still lots of their Christmas stuff you haven't done.

Yeah, as others have said - it's a classical piece from the ballet The Nutcracker. PTX has done another piece from it called "Waltz of the Flowers". Sadly no music video, but you should still have a listen. It's with Matt, instead of Avi.

Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, best place to see ptx's reference moves is see the movie Fantasia by Disney around 1940. PTX's movements are based on that. Just that clip from the movie might be online, but the whole movie is awesome 🎉.

If you like the idea of an acapella 'instrumental', check out VoicePlay's _Halo Theme._ It's really great even if you are unfamiliar with the game. Their site has both a music-only 3-minute version, and a 6-minute one which includes some group history and a touching tribute. I recommend you react to the longer one, which includes an actual video instead of just the album cover.

Oddly enough, a shortened version of this was performed by PTX as the intro music for Fox's Sunday Night Football Pre-game show in 2017. Not what I usually think of in relation to football theme music, but it seemed to work! ua-cam.com/video/OBGBMbC-L6A/v-deo.html

I believe it was Avi with his classical music training that was instrumental in getting the others to try orchestral/classical music. It was certainly he who suggested they add 'Christus Factus Est' to the start of 'Aha'. Maybe the others don't have the will, interest or training to go down that route any more?
