The Grassi Guitar doesn't actually use the megaphone - it's simply a visual clue in the video to alert viewers to who is making the guitar sounds. If you watch any of the live performances of this song (I recommend the September 2022 concert at the Hollywood Bowl), you'll see that Mitch simply sings into his mic the same way he always does. Almost everyone has tried to imitate the sounds of an electric guitar with their vocals at one time or another - it's just that Mitch is really, REALLY good at it!
Pentatonix Bohemian Rhapsody Insights: So, some things to know about this cover and video: -It took PTX years to get the arrangement to where they felt they could do the original masterpiece justice. -The cover, and especially the video, was meant to be an homage to Queen. Some of the moments paying respect were: 1.The mono-recording of the line "easy come, easy go" followed by the panning of the voices from left to right on the line "little high, little low" (which is how the original was recorded), 2. Obviously the flashlights being used to mimic the lighting on the operatic part of the original video, 3. The four shooting stars to represent the four members of Queen, as well as acknowledge the fact that Dr. Brian May is an astrophysicist, 4. The overhead shot of them lying on the couch is to represent the Sheer Heart Attack album cover. 5. When Mitch lies down on the couch, singing "Too late, My time has come," they're referring to Freddie Mercury's death (the foreshadowing was, of course, unintentional on Freddie's part; there's no way he could have known about AIDS, thank goodness). The other four are walking next to the couch to serve as Mitch's pall bearers. The megaphone was just a prop. It is not needed to reproduce the electric guitar distortion. -PTX can, and does, perform this live with no backing track...something even Queen and the Great Freddie Mercury could not do. Freddy once said he didn't care what people did with his music as long as they "...don't make it boring, darling!", so I think he would absolutely approve. They were indeed on an actual road and luckily, there actually is a behind the scenes for the making of this one that you can watch! The link is: ua-cam.com/video/Q8ugJnIG_Lk/v-deo.html Also when Brian Mays heard it... he posted it on his web site with the word "ENJOY”. The overall video--with the "living room" and couch--is an homage to Pentatonix's own journey as a group. They lost their record deal right after winning the Sing Off and moving to LA, so they started putting out videos on UA-cam, performing covers. They would sit on the couch in Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi's (bass) living room and just record themselves on Mitch's (counter tenor who took the lead on this song) iPad. Some of their earliest videos went viral and they eventually were able to secure a new deal, record an EP, go on tour, release chart-topping albums and win three Grammy awards...so they moved out of the living room and down this new, unknown road. At the end of the day, though, they're still the same choir-nerds they've always been; just happy to sit together on a couch and sing.
I noticed you have in your music videos the 2 cellos. If you like cellos, check out one of Pentatonix's newer releases from last December, the cover of A Kiss From a Rose, which is done as a Vevo live performance and features Kevin - the beatboxer - cello boxing (a term he coined). He is a concert cellist and it's always fabulous when they add the cello to their usual a capella sound. I'm glad to have you reacting once again to PTX. There are so many incredible videos for you to react to.
They’re ridiculously unbelievably talented and hard-working. I hope you can see them live someday. It’s an experience of a lifetime. They’re the GOATs of a capella. Kiss From a Rose (live Vevo) will blow your mind as well.
Pentatonix never fails to amaze me. (And everybody else who listens to them!) Your reaction was great and fun and completely honest! I love that! And by the way, you just get cuter and cuter and cuter! Keep up the good work, we love you! ❤❤❤
I love their live 2022 Hollywood Bowl version too. It’s amazing. They do the guitar solo without the megaphone. That was just a prop for the video. There is also BTS video about how they recorded this video. You can see how they fought with that couch all night. This whole video was recorded outside. The back and forth is panning. We can hear it too, if we are listening with headphones.
Since you have an appreciation for Avi Kaplan's work in PTX, you should step into the dragon's lair (as opposed to rabbit hole) that is his ever-expanding, genre-crossing catalog. While it's close to impossible to choose one suggestion for you, let me recommend you start with the song most reactors begin with - the first song Avi released after PTX, "Change on the Rise", from early 2019 (do the official music video). It's a powerful anthem, with just Avi's voice doing all the parts and sounds, except for organ and tambourine in the bridge. As with over 90% of the songs he does, "Change" is an original, and it's been used in several TV shows so far. He'll be touring Europe in September, for the third time, and while he won't be in Sweden, he does have shows in London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Cologne, Aarhus (Denmark), Copenhagen, Warsaw and Prague. Having been to 5 of his concerts since 2019, I can tell you that they are 5 of the top10 I've ever been to in my many years. It would be well worth a trip for you, believe me.
To illustrate why some have said that Avi is his own genre, here's another original song that will take you to another part of his spectrum - "All Is Well, the 7 Layers Sessions Version". It was filmed in a church in Utrecht, Netherlands during his 2022 European tour. Just him, his guitar, and the awesome acoustics of the church. A beautiful piece.
See their Official Imagine (Lennon), The Prayer, Amazing Grace ... and continue to have your mind wonderfully blown. Thanks for the reactions - you're fun!
The audio panning on "little high, little low" is a direct quote from Queen. If you listen to Queen's original you'll hear the same panning on the same phrase. #Pentatonix loves Queen, and they love "Bohemian Rhapsody," so they always wanted to cover this song, but they feared that they couldn't do it justice, so they decided to wait until they were sure they were ready. That took them five years, but it was worth the wait - they were definitely ready. In the early days of Pentatonix, after Epic reneged on the recording contract Pentatonix had "won" on _The Sing-Off,_ Pentatonix started posting to UA-cam; it was the only way they COULD publish their music. A lot of those early UA-cam videos show the five of them sitting on a couch, with the trio on the back of the couch and Avi and Kevin on the seat in front of them, just five very young people singing their hearts out, making their dream come true. Note that this is the configuration we see them in at the beginning and end of "Bohemian Rhapsody," which is one reason the couch needs to move - it's taking Pentatonix (and us) on a trip down Memory Lane. The more important reason the couch moves is that it's standing in for the car in _Wayne's World,_ where Wayne and Garth introduced a whole new generation to the genius of Queen by putting a tape of "Bohemian Rhapsody" into the car's tape player. The couch was motorized, and not very well balanced. (Note that when they're sitting on it their feet don't quite reach the ground. The little curtain thing on the bottom was added to hide the motor.) It kept trying to tip over during the filming and actually managed to throw Kevin off at one point. There was a small platform attached to the back so that Kirstin could climb on the couch from behind - Scott, being a foot taller than Kirstin, didn't need it. The megaphone actually has nothing to do with Mitch's guitar solos; they sound the same in live performances with nothing but a microphone - the electric guitar is all Mitch. Mitch just happened to see the megaphone lying around on the set and thought it would make a cool prop, so it's been confusing people ever since. During the "Bismillah" argument, note that Scott, whose range includes both bass and tenor registers, is actually singing along with both the high and low sides of the argument. Scott has said that this rapid switching is the hardest part of the song for him. When the camera pans up to show us the starry night sky during Mitch's second guitar solo, it's meant as a tribute to Queen's lead guitarist, Brian May, who has a doctorate in astrophysics. The four shooting stars honor the four members of Queen. When the camera pans back down to show Pentatonix lying on the couch together it's meant to recall the cover art for Queen's "Sheer Heart Attack" album. And when this official video was first released, Brian May posted a link to it on all his social media accounts with the comment: "Enjoy."
I just watched your other PTX reactions on the playlist and was happy to find that your mind gets blown by Mitch’s voice, too (and yes I know they are ALL amazing). Because of that, I recommend Amazing Grace, 90’s Dance Medley and their originals Love Again and Coffee in Bed. I hope you will continue with doing PTX reactions (even though getting them posted can be a nightmare because of copyright). Subbing in hopes you will continue down their rabbit hole.
Just found this reaction and went back to your earlier Pentatonix reactions, too. I very much enjoyed them! Subbed in the hope you will explore more PTX without such a gap in time! 😀
Ofcourse, I will always return to PTX at one time or another =) I have learned by now it needs a lot of pausing and often a watermark over the video. Ridiculous but doable indeed =)
Queen have had that sound going from the right to the left in the headphones in another song too. I think it was a song called "Keep yourself alive". I really like Pentatonix, they make amazing music with their voices. I'm also happy I did get to hear that left to right thing in the headphones once. I got deaf om my right ear 2004 so now I can't hear music in that way again.
Yeah, we all know that you must wear headphones when you listen to PTX or you miss a lot. What I can't imagine is how they covered this - voices, guitars, drums, with just 5 voices. One of their very first performances, just a couple months after they formed as a group in 2011, was on a TV show where they did Born to Be Wild, and they did an amazing job. If you want to see Babytonix perform that song, here's a link: ua-cam.com/video/rZMgUxPGiqQ/v-deo.html Last year, did a cover of Seal's Kissed By A Rose. They put a more rock style to it, and it's very cool, with a great solo by their new bass, Matt Sallee. Here's a link to that: ua-cam.com/video/I3NEFUOLtxs/v-deo.html
I've been looking forward to your next PTX reaction and here it is! I'm so happy! Thanks so much for reacting to them! I'm here for all your PTX reactions.

Some Originals are: Love Again, Sing, Be My Eyes, Coffee in Bed, Happy Now, Run to You, A Little Space, Never Gonna Cry Again, The Lucky Ones…. Subscribed for more Pentatonix. Don’t worry about pausing, since we pentaholics know these videos by heart. Also, I would guess that the vast majority of listeners are using headphones or buds. Recommend their cover of Kiss From A Rose.
You seem to appreciate the Bass Avi Kaplans voice. I agree it is amazing! You might enjoy his solo music where he treats us to his entire 5 octave range (sometimes all in the same song). Change on the Rise is where most will start (it is his first release after leaving Pentatonix) he release some music while he was still with the group under the name Avriel and the Sequoias. After Change on the Rise came his Floating on a Dream album produced by Shooter Jennings. There were some "covers" from this album 2 for The 7 Layers Sessions, and 4 more for the Live from Sunset Sound EP. His lates is his Feel Alright EP which has a 70's rock vibe. Avi has only released 2 covers Bill Wither's Lean on Me and OutKast's Hey Ya, he has also done House of the Rising Sun during a Livestream. Subscribing in the hopes you will check out Avi's music.
so, there is a "making of" video for this cover, the couch was a little tippy, Scott said maybe they should wear a helmet to get on the couch, makes me laugh every time I think about it.
Subscribed, they also perform this live, check out Hollywood Bowl 2022 Even if just by yourself if you have any questions “ are they real?” You might like Sound of Silence, New Rules x Are You That Somebody, Daft Punk Medley, Problem, Havana, Can’t Hold Us. Their originals Love Again, Sing, Coffee in Bed, Love Me When I Don’t and Happy Now are amazing.
ABBAMAN., this group has been around for quite a long time I don't know what their Us sales but they must be okay because they keep releasing new music they are at the top of their game and there's one are there acapella group I can remember was called the nylons. Don't think they were around too long. They did an amazing job with this song Freddie would have ❤ it!!!
I’ve listened to this dozens of times. I didn’t recognize until recently that they are all singing on that guitar solo. I heard a live version recently and it’s much more noticeable than it is on this video.
Way to long since reacted to our beloved Pentatonix. Did you do Blinding lights Come along( 1 of the most overlooked song) O and Problem - Ariana Grande song is a must Greetings from South Africa
Pausing is fine, and necessary to avoid being blocked. There is a fine line between annoyingly frequent pauses and the reactor having something insightful to say. You're fine.
Not better. Just as great. The talent to do this song a Capella is missed by many people. There are few "better" performances. Just subjective choices.
Immediately popped on my headphones when you mentioned it. I love that quality of sound engineering. I very much admire their arrangements but they are not my favorite a capella group. To me they always sound immature. Simply a matter of taste of course.
As a matter of fact he is still listening. He is wearing headphones so his own quiet singing doesn't impair his hearing the song. We, of course, don't hear what he is hearing because we are hearing his reaction at the same volume as the music. Don't get me wrong, when reactors sing loudly and badly over the track, especially when not wearing headphones, so it interferes with our and their listening to the original, I usually click off and listen to something else because it is disrespectful to the artist and the viewer but in this case he could continue to hear the track and his singing was quiet and thank the gods, in tune.
The Grassi Guitar doesn't actually use the megaphone - it's simply a visual clue in the video to alert viewers to who is making the guitar sounds. Well thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
This group is just simply amazing. I never get tired of seeing this video!
The pan from left to right at the very beginning is a callback to the original, which does the same thing at the same spot.
I love their live 2022 Hollywood Bowl version too. It’s amazing. They do the guitar solo without the megaphone. That was just a prop for the video.

Great reaction, Thanks. By the way, u have
A good singing voice.
Thank you so much!!
If you listen to Queen doing this song, you will notice that they also paned left and right at that same point.
❤❤❤❤❤
I'd love to see your reaction to Dan Vasc's version of this song. Not acapella, but pretty awsome.
Try Bohemian rhapsody by Forestella out of Korea. Similar but different. And they do it in live show..they are a quartet
They did a upgrade.
you got double Mitch slapped on this one lol
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
By the way the megaphone is a prop. Mitch does this live without it!
I’ve listened to this dozens of times. I didn’t recognize until recently that they are all singing on that guitar solo. I heard a live version recently and it’s much more noticeable than it is on this video.
Way to long since reacted to our beloved Pentatonix.
Did you do Blinding lights
Come along( 1 of the most overlooked song)
O and Problem - Ariana Grande song is a must
Greetings from South Africa
That'll teach you to ignore Pentatonix for so long ! Lol...😂😂
Pausing is fine, and necessary to avoid being blocked. There is a fine line between annoyingly frequent pauses and the reactor having something insightful to say. You're fine.
Thanks Larry, means a lot to hear! =)
Do you really think that many of us don't listen to you with headphones on? I listen to 95% of reactions with headphones.
You never know 🤷🏼♂️😂🤣
When christmas comes watch their Mary Did You Know and also Carol Of The Bells. These are way better than this one.
Not better. Just as great. The talent to do this song a Capella is missed by many people. There are few "better" performances. Just subjective choices.
@@donny1960Well thats your opinion. Everyone has songs that are better than the rest.
@@ad61video I said that. Look up subjective. If reading is in your skillset.
Did you see the hidden messages? There are a few.
I did not
Immediately popped on my headphones when you mentioned it. I love that quality of sound engineering. I very much admire their arrangements but they are not my favorite a capella group. To me they always sound immature. Simply a matter of taste of course.
When you're singing, you're not listening. And you don't sing half as well as they do.
Thank you mr rudeness! Let me write that down so I never forget it 🙏🏻
As a matter of fact he is still listening.
