I love this video! As a certified herbalist, I just wanted to add one little helpful thing to the plantain oil infusing instructions, to help anyone who is going to try it with fresh leaves. If you are going to wash them, which really isn't necessary unless they have been sprayed with something or have a lot of dirt on them, make sure you dry them well before and also add about a Tablespoon of vodka to the leaves just prior to adding the oil and stir it around well. These steps are very important to prevent spoilage. Water in the jar with the leaves and the oil will spoil the oil much, much faster. It is really best to use dried plantain or any herb, for oil infusions. It will make everything much more shelf stable. Happy herbing friends! :)

Christa, I was thrilled with the video today. I have searched for comfrey roots for a some time now and while I was looking at plants an Amish lady was selling, I inquired about comfrey. She didn't happen to have any but said she would check with others, she took my number and address and I figured that was the last of hearing any more about the plant. I was shocked this week when I received a package in the mail from Iowa containing 6 comfrey roots. The dear Amish lady in Ohio contacted a friend in Iowa so I could be blessed with this wonderful plant. Thank you Christa for all that you do, you are an inspiration.

If the leaves need to be washed, it's best to make a tincture with grain alcohol. Otherwise let the leaves sit out to dry! This is very important because they can develop mold and ruin the oil infusion!

I live in Nevada. I. have seen people place their washed herbs on a cookie sheet and then put the sheet on the dash of a vehicle that is sitting in the sun. You need to check periodically. I never did any type of turning or rotating. This can be an inexpensive way to dry foods while experimenting.
It works very well, you don’t have to heat up your oven or use any electricity. The sun does all the work.
The only disadvantage to this method is the residual smell left by the drying herb. That too will dissipate over time.

I find it fascinating that the long leaf plantain has short rounded seed heads while the round leaf plantain has the long and narrow seed heads. It's not really important in the scheme of things, just found it interesting. 😁 I guess everything is balanced in nature.
Oh btw, a couple of days before I caught your video (24 Mar 2024) I had been out in my yard 'barefoot' collecting my flowering comfrey stalks to cut up for my compost pile (I had already made up a batch of comfrey infused oil - not double infused though - so wasn't going to need any more for awhile) anyway while doing so I was stung by a bee and I'm allergic to bees, I promptly rubbed some sap from the comfrey stalk on my toes where it stung me. The stinging immediately stopped and it never did swell and I never had any allergic reaction. 😊

Thank you for sharing. I have been tincturing and making massage oils for years, and me delving into making salve. I was surprised you did not dry your freshly washed leaves before mixing with EVO as thus far all videos I have watched (Old Alabama Gardner is very good) emphasizes using dry material. Water and oil do not mix. I rarely wash as the leaves I pick on my property are clean. Now that I have a dehydrator I dry fresh picked plant material up to 105 degrees. Previously I have always hung my plant gatherings in my kitchen. I am adding Silversol colloidal silver into my salve as a preservative vs. vodka. It is anti bacterial and anti microbial, for added benefit it helps heal wounds. An experiment, I plan to add a few drops to each jar of salve and stir.

We have been prepping for years. Focusing now on freeze dried treats and pies. Not essential to health but helps with happiness! Especially when you have children to think about!

I lost all my comfrey plants last summer I guess it was the heat but I managed to get a 5 gallon bucket of the comfrey tea from them for the last time. Have you ever steam distilled any of the moringa blossoms, I guess the best way to save the blossoms until you have time to do the distillation is to freeze them in a freezer bag. I did some last summer I think where you string them on a thread and hang them in a bottle in the sun to make hydrosol but what I got did not smell like the flowers,it stank, the Meyer lemon flowers smell really sweet like candy. The only thing I can find here that looks like the plantain didn't do anything for me on a bee sting. Big hugs for you Jesus loves you.

Even better with extra virgin organic coconut oil which for vegans does not exploit or harm the bees.

That is awesome. I need to make some of this. I have lots of plantain. I'm not sure about comfrey. Right now, I have dandelion infusion going on to make a dandelion. Salve. My first salve to make. I have been foraging dandelion, purple nettle, and sweet violets. I know last year I got stung by 3 hornets and the first thing I went for was plantain.

I knew the benefits of plantain, but, I didn't know about two types, I have plenty of the broad leaf in Maine, and now I will look for the narrow leaf, I probably have seen and thought it was a different plant. I also have plenty of comfrey that is taking over my place, I made a mistake not containing it,

Ohhh! You have a good problem! I have finally gotten comfrey to get growing here after a few years of trying. (The fearless deer come into my yard and eat it down to the nubbin before it has a chance to get very big.) It makes the best, nourishing garden fertilizer besides it's ability to even heal bones!

Do you think you could use castor oil instead of olive oil? It has healing properties as well

    • @intothewildusa90
      @intothewildusa90 Рік тому +10

Castor oil will work. It will be a much heavier salve. Castor oil has a plethora of its own benefits.

    • @brigidlaffey7343

@Jenny - you can add a small percentage - say 2% - to your mix in order to incorporate Castor’s healing benefits…or whatever proportions you deem appropriate (research)

Thank you very much for this informative video. Im Cherokee Native through my parents. And i have gotten more interested in herbal treatments and homemade medicines. I am allergic to the adhesive on bandaid's it breaks my skin out like poison ivy. Iches like crazy and when you go to scratch it burns. I love the outdoors and hope to go camping a lot. So the sav you showed today would be nice to have on my person as well as in my first aid kit for emergencies. I live alone so i don't have a lot of different cookware. Is there anybody who might sale this sav? Im not sure on my skills to be able to make it right. And i hate to waste anything if i get it wrong. Anyway thank yiu once more Ma'am. May God Bless You And Yours for helping folk's.
