In this relationship advice video, Byrne addresses what it's like dating someone older and how that age difference is perceived from the outside. I've found that people become less judgemental after you stop providing every detail of your life, your age, your likes, your dislikes, your sexuality, your economic position, your this your that - ad nauseum. Be yourself and enjoy your friends and family that enjoy you back. I pay no attention to celebrity relationships at all. I don't know any celebrities. This feels like a "non-problem" to me.
When you are in a relationship like mine where my fiancé is 18 years older than I am I don’t have to say anything for people to notice and it isn’t a non issue. Might be for you but for the people in large age gap relationships it can be hard with the social stigmas and judgment from others.

I'm over a decade older than my (one and only ever) husband. We haven't spent a night apart for over 25 years and each remain each other's favorite person. After spending time with the two of us, our friends generally say they totally "get it." We've never really gotten grief over it. I never saw age as any kind of factor of attraction. He just happened to be "the one." It took him a little while to convince me he planned to be with me forever, but he finally did. He's high on intellect and emotional maturity. That was important.
I’ll never understand why people even care about the relationships of others. When I was in my 20s, I loved guys in their 40s and 50s. Now that I’m almost 50 myself, I still like guys in their 50s and 60s. I simply find older men more physically attractive and I’ve always been an older soul who likes to stay in and do couples stuff. Whenever I go onto dating apps, it’s usually the guys in their 20s and early 30s that hit me up...but I almost always tell them I’m not interested. My friends that are my age think I’m crazy to pass up these hot, ripped guys...but IMO, they’re just nice to look at, that’s all.
In the end, everyone’s tastes are different...and unless they’re hurting you in some way, LEAVE THEM ALONE!!! It’s NOT your business!!!

Me too! My level of maturity matches with older people. I tend to enjoy philosophical conversations that people my age often do not get and have nothing of value or substance to add to it. I'm also a curious learner, so in a way I do love the idea of being able to glean so much life knowledge from someone who has had more experience in this world. Unique perspectives and intellectual and interesting conversations have always been my thing. Explains why I like James Spader no matter how he looks. That level of depth is often unmatched.

I wish more women were like you and didn't care about age. I'm 51 and 26yo said she fancied me, she was with someone but not getting on with him, they gave 2 young kids, but not married. She thought I was in my 40s, long story short, I've fell in love with her but she doesn't feel same and says I'm only 9 years younger than her dad. So the thing I'm reading is it would have been OK if I was 40 which she thought I was, but not 51. I wish I didn't look younger than I was, I wish I looked my age or even older. She is absolutely beautiful, the funniest, the most honest, and the kindest person I've ever met. We are in love & we are best friends. We respect each other, adapt/compromise to make it work. I'm sorry, but if a teenager/someone in their early 20s is dating someone vastly (10-15+ years) older than them, there's something up. There is a massive maturity gap between those two people. Once the younger person hits late 20s/30s... fine. It'll still irk me. Once the younger person is in their 40s, that maturity gap is significantly smaller, and things are a little less... concerning.

I am currently 35 years old (male). For me personally, I probably wouldn't be too interested in trying to date anybody who is anymore than 10 years younger than me. I feel like that would be right around the cutoff where my partner and I would still have at least some things that we could relate with each other on lol. But I don't think it's so much the ages of each person, in and of themselves, as everyone matures at their own pace. It's more the maturity level of each person involved in the relationship. It's a very nuanced topic for sure, with a wide range of different opinions, and view points, many of which more than likely stem from the culture that each individual has grown up in.
I have a question for anyone who would like to answer: If the couple in question have both agreed that, for whatever reason(s), they do not want any children, does a big age gap still matter even then? Would there still be a "power imbalance" between older and the younger partner? It's something I've always wondered because while most relationships/marriages eventually result in children being born, not all do. There are, slowly but surely, starting to be more and more couples out there who are childfree by choice. Both partners in the relationship mutually agreeing, for whatever their personal reasons may be, that having and raising even just one child just does not appeal to them.

The age gap is almost always older men dating younger women. The reason the stigma exists is because a lot of older women get left behind while old **wealthy*** men go get sugar babies. Age gap stigma exists to protect younger women from old predatory men. If attitudes around it are relaxed it just gets easier for old white rich men to creep on younger and younger women. In an actually relatively equal society it would be fine but money talks and people with money buy the affections of young women either implicitly or explicit. You don’t like. Being judged sounds like a first world problem to me my dude. I personally also like dating younger women but I understand why the stigma exists --- when young men start dating older women because they “prefer their company” then it’ll make more sense. I’m 30 and my lady is 19, in the beginning it took sometime to get used to. Her father was not ok with it until he met me. Plus, when we go out in public we never get any stares because I look like I’m in early twenties.
Being in an age gap relationship, i didn’t realize how common it is. Since I’m in one, I see many age gap relationships now. (I work closely with the public) It’s just like how you purchase a car and then you see other people with the same car as you.

I've always liked the company of older women or men or people. I think, it's because I was raised by much older parents in my life. My father was 51 years old when I was born...My mother was 38 years old when I was born.

I thought this was gonna be some "19 year old with 16 year old" type deal. Still, in this case, yeah, if they're both consenting adults, I have no qualms, but when it does come to things like a 19 year old dating a 17 year old, I'm not of the position that the flood gates should be opened, so to speak, but that it needs more research before new possible legislation is made about it. A controversial topic, to be sure, but one that should be looked into nonetheless because, at my college, it's not as uncommon as you'd think.

I do find it odd that if 18-20 year old wants to date a 16-17 year old it is illegal. Apparently at the mature age of 18, you can date a 45 year old and how dare anyone say anything about it.

The only law need to be made is consent so if both consent then it's nobody's business. If a teenager wants to date an adult it's their choice why should the government tell them who they can or can't date it's rediculess and flawed. They claim its to protect minors but minors can be taken advantage of other minors as well and in some case adults and minors gets better results

It is usually the younger men who are jealous when they see a woman their age with an older guy. They automatically assume the woman their age is their property because she is their age, and she needs to be rescued. But in reality we all know they are just jealous. Anyone over age 18 can date and be with whoever they want is they are happy. Age-gap relationships have been happening since the beginning of time.

Age-gap relationships are relatively uncommon, and it is always intriguing to me when I see one. Old men dating young women or vice versa always make me think of the Freudian drives. But judging...? No, I don't judge. But I am fascinated sometimes. And that's the problem I guess. Sometimes people feel like I'm judging them just because I'm curious and fascinated about them. This speaks more of an internal insecurity rather than actually being judged.
I believe I have been exposed to quite a few age gap relationships that really do seem to work out. My grandparents have exactly ten years apart, birthdays included and they're still together, loving and living in harmony. I've always admired their team work and companionship.
I feel like the "fascinated observation" perspective would still fall under the umbrella of judgement and discrimination. For example, it would be considered racist to say that you're curious about and fascinated by an interracial couple and want to know the dark aspects of the psychology that drew them to each other. Age gap relationships are much more common than you think. I personally know several: one of my mom's closest friends is married to man 13 years younger than her, my coworker is in a relationship with a woman 15 years older than him, my aunt's next door neighbor is married to a man 18 years older than her, I'm in a relationship with a man 17 years older than me, etc. And none of these have a financial aspect to them, they're all just two people that hit it off.

Personally, I'm fascinated with things I don't know about. And age-gap relationships are uncommon in my social circle hence the fascination. I probably get desensitized (and lose the fascination) if it were commonplace around me.

No. If the age of consent was at 14, would your morals magically move down to 14? And if it moved up to 20, would you accept it or push to lower it? Morals and the law are very different subjects. You can do whatever you want but be proud of it. Accept that most people will find it weird. You aren't immune to judgement.

More similar-age relationships can be every bit as "transactional"/exploitative, it's just not so obvious to the "outside" observers. Add to that, toxic people exist across the age spectrum, but at least some have either mellowed with age, gaining insights from past relationships or benefited from help, in the form of 12-step programs or more traditional therapy. But not to sound biased, on the flip side, some younger people are more mature than those who are older chronologically. No one is perfect & what short-comings exist may or may not be "resolved" in any relationship, but the dynamic of how we complement/complete each other is or can be "healthy" & you exclude a lot of possibilities if you set age-limited categories. But as stated here at the start, those in more "traditional" roles are more prone to find fault with what doesn't conform to their notion of norms.
