The song was inspired by the writing of Ernest Hemingway about war... the expression 'For whom the bell tolls...' was by 16th century English poet John Donne: "For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee" 🎸🔔
The opening riff was actually played by (late) bassist Cliff Burton - he used a distortion pedal to make the bass sound like a lead guitar... it was what made him a phenomenal bassist and musician (He was only 24 when he passed away in 1986 in a tour bus accident)... Metallica would feature him on a bass solo in their concerts, where he would RIP 🔥on stage (His bass solo was filmed a few times... featured as the track 'Pulling teeth' on the first album "Kill 'em all")

My personal opinion is if you are enjoying Metallica and want to check out something that you wouldn't think would work in a million years then seek out any video from their original "S&M" concert. Metallica + San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. I first watched it with mouth wide open (I enjoy metal and am a classically trained brass musician). Michael Kamen did an excellent job of creating orchestral arrangements that stood up against the 4 guys from Metallica killing it at the front of the stage and the orchestra were working just as hard.
For years Metallica have come on stage to Ennio Morricone's "Ecstacy of Gold" and to have a live orchestra doing the same was a nice touch. Then straight into the near-10 minute instrumental "Call of Ktulu" followed by "Master of Puppets" without a single break. Epic. They did this track, "Enter Sandman", "One" (which I thought was born to be orchestrated after hearing this version), "Wherever I May Roam", "Nothing Else Matters", the list goes on... There was a point at the turn of the 2000s where I had the 2 audio CDs on constant repeat in my car.

Most of us who study music or play an instruments are always astounded by the things Metallica does. There's a little bit of dissonance thrown into the song during the instrumental break they play after the first chorus. They do this twice when they play a chord that's not part of they key that they are playing in. Please do a reaction video for "Master of Puppets" if you haven't done one yet. Weird how this song has no solo. The song actually peaks during the intro. Maybe the best intro to any metal song.

He's got the right idea using this song for opening entrances for fighters. I remember when a wrecking ball was tearing down an old building where I live a long time ago, and pulled my car up to it after work one day and put on the song on the opening instrumental. It was soooo cool! Only got 3 or 4 wrecking swings from the ball, but I had to make that happen. This whole album is fire!

I remember using this song while watching bull riding on tv on mute. Fit so well. Country boys have the wrong music for their lifestyle. Rodeo and car racing go so well with metal.

The song was inspired by Ernest Hemingway's 1940 novel of the same name about the process of death in modern warfare and the bloody Spanish Civil War. Specific allusions are made to the scene described in Chapter 27 of the book, in which five soldiers are obliterated during an airstrike after taking a defensive position on a hill.

Fun fact: The bell sound heard at the beginning of the track was actually produced by drummer Lars Ulrich striking an anvil with a metal hammer in combination with a bell from a sound effects reel.

Just found your channel today and gave an instant sub! Great reaction to a great song. Metallica has been number 1 for me for almost 30 years. If you're looking to stick with this album, Fade to Black is an absolute must. The song Battery from the puppets album is a personal fav of mine too. Now to go binge watch some of your videos haha 🤘

OK, so we all know...their song "One" is inspired by the 1939 book; Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo. This one is inspired by the 1940 book "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Ernest Hemingway.
