    Quite good. I remember watching every saturday evening these captions on TV... its where came my enthusiasm for jazz. However Jean Christophe Averty is quite nervous on the controls....

      I think you’re maybe a bit confused about the meaning of “medley”.

    These piano duets or conversations were taking place in the arena between 23 & midnight ! Nice was at this time the best Jazz festival in the world , and one of the fews to be worth the name !

      A piano duet is a performance of two pianists playing simultaneously, which never happens here.

      hence my sentence of "piano duets or conversations" some were playing in alternance, others were playing together.@@jeffryphillipsburns

    Jesus christ, Teddy Wilson was the best, nobody beats that guy, he will always be the coolest swing pianist that ever lived!

    Fantastic video, but why couldn’t they give Mr Wilson a piano that was in tune? Gee whiz!

      I asgree completely, but if you remember that these sessions were outdoors in the July heat, and the festival had six or so sets running simultaneously afternoon and evening, you might consider it a matter of staffing rather than disrespect.

    Teddy would not play a piano that was out of tune. It was probably recorded on tape and the tape is in bad shape with wow and flutter. It has probably stretched over time. It is too bad the recording isn't better quality because Teddy Wilson was one of the great ones and this was an excellent performance.

      You may be right. But on what basis do you know what Teddy would or wouldn't do? Long-time personal friendship, perhaps? Ask any pianist whether they have the luxury of walking away from a gig because the piano is sub-par, I look forward to your response. Thank you.

    Great set by Teddy Wilson!! Thank so much for uploading!!! Not to disrespect it in the slightest way, but the way he helds his first finger right hand...did he have some health problems with it? His playing is virtuoso as ever nevertheless.
    Could also be a position during octave playing (also with cord tones inside). But he did some descending lines without using first finger, if I am right. In any case, very impressive and beautiful! From a curious fan!

      It did indeed look odd, but you can’t argue with the result. (By the way, the kind of chord you mean is spelled with an “h”, although both “chord” and “cord” ultimately derive from the same Greek term meaning “string”. Nevertheless, if you want to be understood in English, you need to spell “chord” with an “h”.)

    Dick plays:
    18:54 Lover Come Back to Me
    24:27 Carolina Shout
    27:40 Maple Leaf Rag

      Yes, we know. The title of the first appears on the screen, and Hyman announces the last two.

    Dick Hyman is certainly a technical master, but as a pianist he’s pretty much an archivist, rather than of his time, which probably explains why he doesn’t seem to have made a dent in the history of jazz. It’s hard to imagine any other jazz pianist of note ending a concert with a rendition of “Maple Leaf Rag”.

    • @CliffordLetsche
      @CliffordLetsche 4 місяці тому

      He spent most of his career as an anonymous studio pianist. He was “current” when paid to do so, but mostly he was paid to rehash old styles by producers. This led to an interest in old music and the archival approach, which he admits. Before that, he was a self described “bebop kid”, but that stopped being profitable in the early sixties. Gotta make a living…

    Wow, shame on whomever provided that absolute DOG of an untuned piano!

    • @swingyoucats
      @swingyoucats  5 місяців тому

      True, the piano is out of tune, but it was outdoors and I think used morning to night. Listen beyond its limitations to hear Wilson, instead?

    • @tannertaylor
      @tannertaylor 5 місяців тому

      Most festivals will have a piano technician on-site so that this doesn’t happen! Of course, Wilson is a genius and plays wonderfully despite the piano

    • @CliffordLetsche
      @CliffordLetsche 4 місяці тому

      I’ve heard far worse. Most of the pianists I know are more concerned with touch and volume than a few odd bum notes.
