My grandad passed quite recently and when clearing out his house, I discovered a good sized record collection of 50s rock n roll.
I'm gonna have to clean them up and get a record player to relive his youth. I absolutely love the tone of this era, it's something very much lost my modern digital recording.
Sorry for your loss
I feel the same way about the older formats!
I like how you use a cheap record player so it wouldn’t damage your professional record player’s needle.
The crosley collegiate is one of the best small record players of the modern age you can buy
@@radiorobertakaandy5982 How about no.
@@vidarnilsson816 this one is actually decent. It has a decent tone arm and an audio technica stylus
I think it takes quite a lot to get to a point where a needle becomes damaged, or at least where it's not sounding as it did.
@@Santiaguilar98a decent tone arm? Its generic with no balance or counter weight. Surprised it even played lol
After loosing my life time collection, 1000+, in a flood about 6 years ago, I am just now starting to collect LPs again. This time I am more looking at the graphic and subjects of the cover more so then the group. I love the 50s stuff now. And yes you would be sick if you knew and seen what was lost. Some from the 50's and mostly 60's.
I feel your pain. I had that happen and lost half if my albums, photos, ... it was sad. Sorry that that happened to you.
If washing a record, I'd be using distilled water, not tap water. According to other audiophiles, alcohol may be used. It is also important not to get the label wet. Ink could potentially run.
I'm guessing the Decca record was pressed between 1949 to 1952. The way that I can tell is the inner groove has the swaying in and out. It sounds great!!!
MCA bought the label in the mid-1970's. Currently owned by Universal.
Just wanted to tell ya, my girlfriend's sister is getting out of rehabilitation after a long while (she contracted meningitis), and finally coming home. Thanks to your vids about the Collegiate, I'm going to be picking one up for her (along with some vinyl of course) as a welcome home present, & as a way for her to continue her rehab at home by having her to get up, walk over, and flip the record, and walk back again. Just wanted to thank you for giving me the idea by showcasing this turntable, it sounds great on video so I feel it will sound great in person as well! Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you for your wonderful comment! Best wishes and prayers for you and your girlfriend's sister! If you love the Collegiate - check out this weekend's show (hint hint) Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
That is not the world's dirtiest record. My brother just brought over my dad's old records and they literally look like they were buried in mud within a time capsule. I'm glad to know that before seeing this video I basically did the same thing you did but I used my hands lightly with running water to clean them. I have a lot more to go through but it's good to know I'm on the right track as they have been playing greatly. Some were so bad they were stuck inside the sleeves.
holy shit fr dude, mine too! They were from my grandfather's and yea they also looked like they were buried on mud. Loool
And yet no ANY dirt on the label! 🙄
Man, and I complain about a couple of pops on my beatles records
Very nice. Thank you. Good information in the front, missing New Orleans in the back.
i found spraying simple green[diluted 2/1 with very warm water] for example 1-1/2 cups water to half a cup simple in in a different spray bottle
This is the same method I used to clean flood damaged records-They actually went thru a flood. You can't do anything about the scratches from the flood-but you can clean the dirt off without much problems. If you soak the records in water-the labels can soak off.IE the Rapid City South Dakota flood of '72.
Interesting thank you!
Woah I have the same experience!
I was hoping you would play the 6-eye. This is exactly how I clean mine. Bravo. Best way!
Instead of paper towels, you could use a micro fiber towel
I'm guessing the Columbia Masterworks record was pressed in the late '50s/early '60s.
Wow you did great job on cleaning a dirty record,on one my records it has about 5 circle type marks glue faded white colour could be glue that's been for years I bought the record cheap anyways online,it's an 80s record by Chaz Jankel an debut album probably could get it easy anyways but Iit play pretty decent with those circles marks I mentioned its clear on one or 3 of songs either where the circles might skip i always give a rub round a cloth to get rid of dust and probably breathe on and wipe helps a little, but I just want to remove them completely or near enough get rid of them would your cleaning method work on this record thanks 😊...
Excellent, just what I was looking for. I discovered a leak that got into a record box, some of the record sleeves glued themselves onto my vinyls, I'm looking for the best method to get them back to new. Although as I type you're coming across a bit brash lol clean and playable are two different things. Let's see how this video progresses lol water isn't the answer, it needs to evaporated, you need isopropyl type fluid
I just adore Vinyl so much!!!
Well done Sir! Great music. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you too!
As there is so much info on Chube about cleaning vinyl, I was about to type a surprised response discussing distilled water, microfibre cloths and even using a steam cleaner..
Then... you pulled out the Crosley.
Mate, this is the best troll I've seen in a while.
Grind that dirt into the groove
🤣🤣😂
I rely on Discofilm for my records, which have become real hardship cases after a wild party. This classic is an absolute must for every record collector. My recommendation: use the Discofilm set and bring your vinyls back to life.
I just inherited on my father's albums after he passed away, they're in rough shape. I have my work cut out.. I just ordered a record player so I'm excited to listen to these again though. Thanks for the tips!
Awesome I've done this method also, using a little dishwashing soap and then rinsing.
Great video as always
But question. Can you review the innovative technology. It's a pretty nice unit in my opinion
justin sanchez The Innovative Technology ITCDS-600?
Innovative Technology purchased the Victrola name a couple years back - so the Victrola products we have reviewed are actually IT. Thank you for commenting - great question!
Do you have a pet bird ? Keep hearing a squark!?
Yes indeed!
I was hearing a squeak and thought it was the record player! Now I know it was a pet bird. Thanks for clearing that up in my mind. Lol...@@Recordology
Wood glue pulls all the gunk out of the grooves without grinding the grit and grime against the grooves...but it takes 8-12 hours per side to dry and it costs more.
Wowzers that record was disgusting!great result compared to out of the sleeve.i have quite a few nasty records like that
I have about 200 in worse condition as they were caught in a flood at our cabin. Not looking forward to cleaning them lol
I think that "Broadway's Best" has Al Hirshfeld drawings on the cover.
I have used Comet cleanser to gently clean the dirt clots out of some records. It works, but you want to rinse, rinse, rinse, and wash the hell out of the grooves with a mild soap before you play it.
Would you share How did you store your vinyl after since the original cover was damaged? I found some and the covers are dead ! Lol
wow the record got a rough treatment and it still sounds great....
Not even using a record label protecter? Wow okay I see
Water and a washcloth? That is the secret method?
That's pretty impressive!
my grandpa just gave me all of his old records. He left them in his garage for like 10 years so they're covered in mold. Hopefully I can save them!!
Smoke alarm needs a new battery... or birdy want's attention.
Close....actually the bird needs a battery.
You can buy an inexpensive screw on label protector on eBay and scrub the crap out of it without worrying about getting the label wet.
what???? no???
Hudson Hifi also makes a simple rubber one we have reviewed.
I have used this same technique many times. It works great. Only difference is I have used a mild dish washing detergent then a thorough rinse
And dry. I have never had any problems.
Great video 👍
Thank you!
Thanks for another great video.
I’m curious, does Yoshie dance or bee-bop when listening to music? I remember you mentioning in another video that he was sitting on your shoulder while you were doing a review, I think it would be cool if you would actually introduce him to us on an upcoming video.
Have a great day
Roy
Wow! Some.job!
Well done!
Thank you very much!
I heard you shouldn't use faucet water on records because of the chemicals or something, is it safe to wash and clean records with tap water?
We have hard water in Colorado but as long as you dry it with a separate cloth - it doesn't seem to matter.
@@TheAndy1268 How can I tell if my water is safe?
Yeah here in NY I use my tap water to do quick cleanings, seems to work well enough!
@@TheAndy1268 Thanks for the info! I might have to do alot of researching just to clean my record haha
does a very good job
Omg thank you so MUCH Life saver
mines worse than that. wow, I'm got that Glenn Miller Story record.
A couple questions. 1. Can this water method be done on any record? 2. Been out of the loop since the 80s. Can you recommend to me a nice cheap record player that'll do the job well and properly?
Welcome back and thank you for writing! I personaly have had great luck with this method but if you come accross a paper glued on label they can be damaged. SO I would go with this type of cleaner amzn.to/2KhOS2E also as for a good affordable starting player - the Audio Technica LP60X cant be beat! amzn.to/3ihxjfD
How many smoke detectors do you have that need batteries??
One, and he has feathers and is named Yoshi.
What about leaving the vinyl soaked overnight in mild dishwasher solution?
I would be a little concerned about the label
@@Recordology Honestly speaking, I have tried this after I wrote this comment, and nothing happened to the label itself. The vinyl looked great, however, still had those scratches while playing.
Can you do this with a painted record
I have record that was digged out of the mud and clay by the excavator. And it looked better
i dont even know how that got that freaking filthy
It looked like you used the same cloth for the second record as you did the first? Unless you cleaned the towel off-camera, you probably transferred some of the dirt from the first record onto the second.
U dont use any solvents?
Why you clean a record and play another one? Would love to ear the final result of the dirty one.
Wow
Actually try to play it wet. It makes less noise if you spray water on it, for real
I use purified water when cleaning albums that are that dirty. I can't determine whether my water is hard or not.
Hello! Using acetone to clean tracks - vinyl may be dissolved))
I don’t think I ever suggested that
Be very careful with the fogging' on records like this the mould is dangerous to the lungs
Oooh good tip thank you!
That poor washcloth
You think THAT'S nasty? I have a copy of the Apple Records debut by James Taylor that's much worse! So bad that when I cleaned it up....ok ok, tried to....the center labels rubbed off!
The now closed Antique store I found it in (it's now a Tattoo place) gave it to me for free!
Really?
Ruined and removed the tone and warmved😢
