This is a History Mini-Series covering the desert near Balarat, CA. So much history is overlooked in this area especially related to the 49'rs that escaped Death Valley through the area.
Full series episode list can be found here:

On this adventure, we tour the Barker Ranch where Charlie Manson was captured on October 12, 1969. We also explore the area around the ranch where the family had several bunkers to observe the area. We also show what the area looked like before it burned down in 2009.

    Original Building History:
Bluch and Helen Thomason began construction of Barker Ranch around 1940. It was originally used as a storage and shop facility to support their mining activity in the area. They constructed a small cabin and out building, with electricity provided by a windmill and generator, and drinking water from a nearby spring. In 1950, Bluch Thomason died and the ranch became a seasonal vacation property.
The ranch was sold to James and Arlene Barker of Oklahoma in 1955. The Barkers engaged in gold and uranium mining in the area through the rest of the 1950s and the 1960s. To accommodate their family gatherings, the Barkers enlarged the house and constructed more buildings.

My dad had a mine in the area at the time. He ran into Charlie a few times on the road. They knew each other by name. I was with him once but to young to remember. He talked about them acting crazy and running around naked. Scary times. Thanks for sharing this.

Sad to see the ranch destroyed, I was there in the 90’s and it was in good shape, spent the night. There was spring water piped down to the front and watering an orchard and I fixed some of the piping to continue watering all the trees. The tile was on the floor and you can see the shotgun blast in the floor that a sheriff had an unsafe discharge. Glad I got a lot of photos of the ranch before the fire.

I became obsessed with the Helter Skelter crap when I was 16, back in 1990. I couldn't get the information from my mind for YEARS. Watching this footage gives me chills.
I guess that's why I re-visit the Spahn Ranch and death valley every so often. Also, because in my mind, I am so intrigued to go back in that time. I still watch old videos of Sharon Tate as well.
Maybe it's because of that era that draws me. THIS is the FIRST video that has actually shown Way more artifacts than I could have ever asked for. Thank you SO MUCH!!!!

I read the books by Susan and Tex in 1988. Those books reveal the parts that people are still afraid to talk about. The part where Manson mentions Fard's cult. The master mind is W.D. Fard. L. Ron Hubbard developed Fard's theology into Dianetics. Manson and the NOI were the first to be audited and Manson was released after becoming OT Clear. The Manson Family carried out orders given through Fard's teachings. The first slayings began in Detroit, 1933. Zebra, Zodiac, and Helter Skelter are all connected to the same network. The call to activate Fard's plan was given in Harlem by Amiri Baraka and Sun Ra in 1968. It's called A Black Mass. Helter Skelter was only a cover up for Zebra, which is an obvious code for black on white provocation.

I would LOVE to go there🤭 unfortunately I live in Alabama (town with 2,000 people) I’ve been trying to get out and make my way to California since I was first saw the beautiful landscape when I was looking at pictures of the Manson family, I’ve been interested since I was a kid! I’m 19 now and still trying to get free. I also think about Sharon a lot, she was very beautiful and had a fruitful life ahead of her I’m sure. Also have you read the book “my life with Charles Manson” by Paul Watkins? It’s amazing and gives so many new details, and it’s in audio form on UA-cam! Or goodbye helter skelter is another good one.

In younger years I made a few trips exploring around death valley. About 1991 after a trip to oregon, on my way back to colorado, I drove from Lone Pine through Keeler, stopped to check out Ballarat town site, then drove up Goler wash, found an old vw beetle body at a turnout that led to the Barker ranch main house maybe 100-150 feet beyond. At that time the main house looked in relatively good shape with a fresh exterior paint job. Continuing up the road to Mengel pass I noticed what looked like a dumping site in a ravine behind the house, with lots of tin cans, old pipe, mattress springs, other junk. After reading a couple books about the manson family when I was a teenager, it was interesting to get out to see that area.

An interesting story about the Manson family.
My mother was a nurse at Goleta Valley General Hospital in the 1970's.
I don't remember the year except early '70's. Anyway, 3 people were sleeping on the beach in Isla Vista and they were attacked by someone or someones with a hachet. Two died on the beach, the other died a day later in the ward my mother worked. She said his brain had sand in it.
There were no clues to the murders. Years later some Manson members claimed that they had done it but then refused to talk.
The case has never been solved as far as I know.

On July 5th 1970, three young men, Thomas Victor Dolan (17) of Manhattan Beach, Thomas Hayes (19) of Hermosa Beach and Homer Clyde Shadwick (19) of Saginaw, Michigan were discovered by a passer-by on a beach in Santa Barbara, that straddled the University of California Santa Barbara building at Campus Point. Two of the young men had succumbed to their injuries, while the third, Thomas Hayes had been rushed to hospital in nearby Goleta in critical condition, after the three appeared to have been subjected to a frenzied attack with a bladed weapon while camping out in their sleeping bags on the night of the July 4th 1970. Fortunately for Thomas Hayes, he survived the brutal assault.

Great breakdown and archival of history.
I was there before the fire and filmed most of the area but it was an SD camcorder...
I walked past the big rock bunker, after it narrows up to the side canyon that goes up to the left. I got a really weird intuitive prompt to head up that canyon. It was dusk. At about 100' up I saw an old weathered S L 42 shell casing and some odd bones that had recently been uncovered by rain.
I didn't recognize anything that would confirm it was human so I assumed it was an animal taken by a hunter.
It was a bit freaky how I was led to that spot though. I wonder if that meant something considering the alleged past?
A month later I hear it was burnt down.
I thought those might be miner camps on the out skirts. I appreciate your sharing info on their operation.
Where did they get the gear and knowledge top set up a system like that?

visiting had been marked by the burning down of the Canadian Ranch House. Many strange things have happened up there I could FEEL it! When the Police etc. went back there some years ago
THEY knew full well other bodies had been disposed of but it had been TOO long to prove inconclusively (not to mention old Charlie had used some lime) not the type of lime used with Tequila either.

There is a spring nearby that was used to water the trees and everything else.

I can't believe he didn't mention that the back of the old truck read "Helter Skelter". It was aimed right at the camera.

Lots of errors in his version of the Manson Family at Barker. Too many to list, but the buried bottles of booze would not have been for any of the family as they actually didn't drink alcohol.
He needs to read some of the autobiographies of family members for more accurate info.

I don't think the family wrote that Helter Skelter on that truck. I think ranch visitors in later years added that.

They used both Meyer's Ranch (a little ways above and it belonged to the grandmother of a family member) and Barker. Charlie actually went down into the valley and gave the old woman who owned Barker's one of the Beach Boys framed gold records and a promise to take care of the ranch in exchange for her allowing the family to stay there. Technically, only Charlie and the family had the owner's permission to be there.

We also had wonderful happy carefree days out there. The family is old and dying off - Susan (Sadie) is gone, she was adorable and the memories of our very special times together are never far off, even if they were so long ago. It felt like we'd be young and live forever.

@@danielleward5770 Cappy suggested her grandmothers ranch Myers Ranch but they had to leave because her grand mother was coming back. It was then that they decided on Barker Ranch. Manson sweet talked the owner into letting him stay by giving her one of Dennis Wilson gold records.
