- Comfort is important on a long trip, right? What about reliability? Well...without it, you cannot complete any trip, so... comfort or reliability on long motorcycle trips? In this video, I will share my thoughts on this topic.

I just sold my 2018 Africa twin. 96,000kms in four years of touring. Zero failures. Nothing, not a light bulb. I bought reliability. I just traded down to a Transalp, I hope I’m again buying reliability. A major reason for the change is to lose 100lbs. I looked at all the bikes (T7 included) I can afford a ‘top drawer’ bike. I want, decent performance/handling, not carrying high up weight, and reliability. I miss looking over my shoulder and seeing a beauty, but I’ve owned 30,000km and done bikes and a major break down a 1000kms from home. If you’re riding around town, so be it, but buy reliability for touring.

Palvin very true. The more electronic the more the chance you face failure. Just had a simple bike and traffic. You get less worry free ride. In the end.

My rule to beginners: get a simple and solid bike (any cc) of a global mass selling model and brand: suzuki, or yamaha. That I constantly go against that rule is my choice, I have to live with and do so. I plan ahead, but I know I will struggle in remote locations with my “2-wheel bus”. That’s why I try to avoid going too far off. There’s enough adventure on the trips I go about, solo, for now. If I’m done and go further I will certainly swap it for a more purposeful “tool”, like the tenere or smaller.
I can say nothing but that I agree with your assessment. I sold a complicated motorcycle and bought a simple on - I miss nothing that the complicated one had.

I ride without any electronics on my enduro bikes. But if well-made why wouldn't you want some progress? The question is reliability. If all systems would work as trouble-free as let's say injection systems or ABS... Happy rides, Günter/Nürnberg

Your right. Pick the bike for type of ride. If you you like long distance on pavement a goldwing gives you reliability and comfort.
If adventure riding then a bare bones adventure bike makes the best choice.

Completely true, I had a Aprilia Tuareg 2022 very comfortable to ride but not reliable at all, I change it for a tenere rally 2022 , not technology at all, but my mind is set to enjoy the ride and not to think what if this broke on the middle of nowhere 😂

I have to admit Pavlin, that I always have something else to do, but usually just grab my favorite drink and watch your video. :) My 2021 T7 was stolen in February and I have been looking between the KTM 790, the Aprilia Tuareg and a new T7. I always end up with the T7. Ready for the apocalypse.

Agreed. Honda CB500X, 12,000 miles last summer touring Europe. Zero problems. Reliability is number one priority and simple is best 🙂✌🏻

Especially with Honda, the more you go with a bread and butter bike the more reliable it is. Go retro, poser, complex or race-bike and you’re f***d. Honda VFR 1200 (and the Adventure version) had bad shaft-drives, Honda retro-fours can’t cope with heat, Honda sport bikes aren’t alway cylinder wear-protected, pure aluminium. Go car-like complexity you’re done, too, in remote locations with the e-Lec-trix.
Best Honda, CT90 line, today CT110… The mulis of every remote country.
Yam Super-Ten has it’s issues, too on the drive side, so for smooth stuff, excellent, ultra-heavy.
Bikes that measure in hours for maintenance, regardless what brand are untouchables for long-range reliability.
Ducati, KTM, Triumph, I wouldn’t touch, not only for their complexity or variable quality and neglecting service, even my loved brand of Moto Guzzi isn’t a good choice.
Why, because you’d stay away from any exotic brand to the remote countries you’re going to, even if there might be a few people owning such collection pieces in that country.
Thus, to me, mass-sold (global) Yamaha and Suzuki are the way to go, or the most basic mass-sold (global) Honda, when it comes to remote places traveling.
If you do sports, rent locally (remote countries) your sports bike. I mean the Off-road hard core trippers.
Excellent point made, I agree. One of my favorite bikes to ADV is a 1981 Honda GL500. After 70k miles, it's never let me down. Not bad for a $200 bike.

Motorcycling is a mannish, tough thing that must hurt because the pain keeps your senses sharp. Do you want comfort? Forget riding, take your Rolls Royce and go to the spa! Or, as a famous motorcycle meme says: ride hard or stay home. This is a pamphlet and should be treated as such. 😁 As usual, I can only agree with you. Cheers, mate! 🍻

Great points you brought up. I agree that many people go overboard on comfort. I see this mainly with the big cruisers. But for me Why can’t comfort and reliability go together. and I think that can. If you have the bike that’s right for you. I currently live in Japan ( yo should visit and ride) and My current ride is a 2024 Tenre 700. extremely reliable as Yu well know and for me it is a comfortable bike. Ok I did put wind screen adjuster, rear rack, heated grips and a Motology TFT offset plate . But that’s it and I have full comfort.

I got a Tenere 3 years ago, yes very reliable, but boring bike, then I got a KTM 890 R, and now I am super happy and exited every time I use it. So it is not about reliability, it is about passion!

Both a MUST, a agree to many electronics “ more to go wrong “ BUT most new bikes have sorted that out pretty well ( especially European brands ) KTM 790/890 has more a mechanical problems - cam lobs , BUT they have had some issues with electrical issues. That’s why I have never owned a KTM . In saying that they do have some great models like the 1090 was and is a bulletproof bike and very reliable. Basic electronics I believe is a good thing , ABS , traction control and basic ride modes . And cruise control. I used to think the same way as you , once you have it you appreciate it .

Great video Pavlin and thank you! Yeah, get what you are saying and appreciate your statement that is all up to the rider. I ride a Multistrada, great bike and will spare you the usual blathering that goes along with it! But.....why did I buy it? Well, when I was 16 I saw my first Ducati......fell in love with the bike and if asked me why I ride a Ducati, one word, Lust.......what can I say!

Right on! I have a 2012 R1200 GS. I hope I won’t have to fix it! Great bike, but around the world? No! Leave it to the movie stars. I have an old KLR650. A mule! Have gone everywhere. But I will replace it with a 250 or 350…maybe even Chinese.😮

When I'm comfortable, I'm more reliable 😊 I went from XT250 to CB500X. Traded off-road ability for on-road comfort.

Today bought a CRF300 Rally. Hope she is reliable. After 11 years without a motorbike I think it´s the right way for ADV.

Reliability is the first thing on any bike requirement for travel.
Without it you have problems from the start.
Everything else can be worked outir dealt with/adapted.

Hi totally agree when you see on you tube a bike failing its normally electronic i tour on either my 2017 Africa twin very little tec compared to latest models or my 11 year old Harley street bob no tec no screen not a screen lover its a motorbike but to each his own

You are not wrong, i test rode a Harley Pan-America, it broke down on me, and the weight! Not i bike for me! My Suzuki Bandit just took me 1000 Km this weekend (quick tour) in comfort, doing 3.8 l / 100Km only with ABS, it was fantastic.

Reality it is. ADV craziness and marketing took all the motorcycling. Id rather pay for quality bearing then TFT screen. But thats me.
If doesnt have LEDS, TFT, Quickshifter, heated grips, heated seats, people dont want to buy it.

Comfort to me is: seat, ergonomy, lights, windscreen, top-loading luggage (soft or hard). I don’t see how a good seat, lights, ergo is any bad to reliability. The digital stuff has nothing to do with comfort, ok, heater, sure, but I never had any heating. Navigation is work, not comfort, and easily done with separate paper or device solutions if not embedded, but “linking” is an annoyance, a bad one. Music and electric screens, even mechanically adjustable shields are obsolete stuff, nice to have, but if anything bad, it’s cutting into reliability. I had no problems, yet. Actually I did, but had a workshop to fix it nearby ($$$ but done).

Now, to be a bit more serious I'd say it depends. For example, a comfortable seat is a must have on long trips. Same thing with the wind protection, its level can vary but it's way better to ride when you don't have to struggle.
And so on and on.

Padded cycling tights turns any bike seat into a comfortable seat, even better than a goldwing seat. A 10 hour is easy

If the comforting factor requires no tools to attach or detach, one should use it. Sheepskin cover, beaded seat cover, cramp buster.
Tools required? Well then, will the bike function without it? My cruise control module was pricey, but it won't cause the bike to not start or run.
Though I must admit, I packed too much on my last trip. Next time I cross Australia, no panniers. Just top box and good back seat bag to rest against.

The sad fate for *many* motorcycles is that they sit in a garage and do nothing. They get taken out for a few rides now and then, revved in the driveway to make sure they still work, and that's it. I see some people think 50'000km on a bike is huge. I test ride some and the owner is worried I may not be interested because of some mileage.
I don't care if your bike has been on a trip around the continent; the nature of your riding and how you cared for it matter far more. Sure, I'd prefer lower readings if possible. But it's depressing to see a touring bike with 20'000 kms at 15 years old. My Honda CB400 had 8'000 kms at 8 years old when I bought it. I put 1'000 kms on it in just over a week. My V-strom had about 30'000 at 6 years, I put 65'000 in 4. I'm on track to double my Crosstourer's 30'000kms at 8 years to 60'000 within two years.

First time i've heard of this. Most travellers talk about mechanical issues or wire, fuse battery electrical issue. I saw an old statistic that said, in general, 1/4 of faults are electrical followed by others with less frequency. Nothing new to distinguish electrical versus network.

All very true Pavlin but in this modern day in which we live technology has taken over, be it market forces or government intervention.
Many good old reliable bikes have disappeared or were never sold in some markets due to safeticrats stepping in and saying it doesn’t meet emissions standards or it has to be equipped with ABS or market forces making bikes to suit older born again riders wanting there new bike to be equipped like their car.
Us old school riders are the minority my friend, new motorcycles have to be like a new phone, all the technology you may ever need but actually making a phone call is way down the list of priorities, the camera is more important, if the charging port or battery malfunctions the phone doesn’t work, no simple answer like swap batteries. 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Pavlin, since I saw you riding it, I am interested in your oppinion about Africa Twin but Adventure Sport model from 2018 (one with not that much electronics) DCT version. I saw ppl are running 150k+ kilometers with this 2016-2019 DCT africas without any problems.
I would appritiate graeatly your honest oppinion about its potential reliability.
I haven't heard about any problems with this model.
A guy told me my XT250 is too complicated to be reliable because it has fuel injection…

I don't even want ABS on my bikes, adds weight and another item to break down and service, and for the comments " you don't need it until you need it"...that's good for YOU if you like it. I don't need or want.

comfort = safety, if you are not comfortable, especially on long trip, you compromise safety as you will be distracted by pain in your wrist, in your bottom, legs, etc. Safety > reliability so in the end comfort > reliability. That's in my book. Cheers!
