My father was in the Kriegsmarine (Uboats) and ended up in the Marine Infantry at the end of 1944. He sometimes used to get us up on Sundays by playing marches at full volume. This was one, Alte Kameraden, Panzerlied, I know them all. He's been gone a long time but I still listen to them. I walked with him through the last battlefield he fought over before being wounded. I learned the names of most of the men who were in the company he commanded while paying respects to them in the cemetery at Duran. Walking along the Kal trail at dusk, I would swear I felt the men all around me, looking down from the ridges, asking what did they die for? Such a waste. It's a pity we can't just take all the mouthy politician's and their masters and put THEM into the trenches when wars come. They would stop happening pretty damn quick.
Wow that’s such a empowering message 👍
Beautiful story and message
Rip your grandpa may he rest in peace ❤😢
War is horrible for both sides.
Why do we fight for government and politicians..? They need to take matters into their own hands, due to their own disagreements, and not waste the lives of father's, brothers, uncle's, friends, and sons who never had anything to do with it, but they fight for the honor of their land and people, when in reality they are fighting until the other leader realizes their are out of pieces to play...

When you actually read the lyrics and learn that this song is about a flower
Fun Fact: Military marches were designed so that the music kept the troops in time for marching, while also building their confidence. The lyrics were meant usually to keep them calm, knowing they might not return. Going into battle with a group of thousands of terrified distraught teenagers never works well, so get them ready while being productive at the same time using a nice song that sounds hilarious as you bark out an anthem about Erika's
When you invade Russia, you need all the morale you can get. Germany did better than any nation on earth

For anyone who wants some context on the song, the girl Erika is described as the most beautiful flower essentially. That's what the song is really, to the men who served Germany viewed the song as a morale booster and gave them hope that they would be able to go back home and be with their women after the war. The song was never meant to be a "Nazi propaganda song", it was just used by them as a way to encourage their men and give them reasons to fight for their country.

Ok so the disclaimer was unnecessary. This song has nothing to do with the Nazi Party whatsoever. The Nazi's just adopted it because it was popular at the time. It wasn't written for them and it's not a Nazi anthem. It is not offensive to play this.
The song does have ties to Nazi Germany and the NSDAP. The composer, Herms Niel was a member of the NSDAP and SA as well as creating and performing many songs for them.

It's literally a song about men singing about a flower, and their sweetheart back home, both named Erika. And on the third stanza(?) the flower asks the soldier if they are thinking of their fiancée, and how she is weeping for them.
Like, how wholesome and sad. This isn't some anthem about how they'll crush their enemies, or how to commit war crimes and get away with it, it's about the flower on their windowsill and the girl they love.
Fortunate Son is literally a more offensive song, tho not by much, considering it's trying to make a statement Against war, but still Erika doesn't even mention war.
It is actually quite similar to Mulan's "A girl worth fighting for."

Gee, really makes you wonder… What ever you do, don’t watch Europa: The Last Battle
No it’s a song about a young boy who aspires to be an artist and take care of his beloved mother Erika.
People should understand just from hearing the German language shouldn't make them think negatively. I know WWII is a very important subject and a reminder, I know many countries have their songs of war and for loved ones back home. I don't know German but when I heard the song I 100% felt it and had a feeling what it was about, then did my own research and read the lyrics and in the end, during war, men of all backgrounds/nations etc etc went off to war to die and the one thing that kept them going in order to get home was the ideas of being back with the ones they love. Many soldiers did not want to fight for Germany so when I think of the ones forced to fight and be away from home the perspective makes you feel the emotion of it all. From all Nations around the world so many people lost and never made it home. Their loved ones never got to see them again. May we still learn from humanities history, I could not fathom it all... those were men.
Agreed
I completely agree I feel everyone should respect the story behind this songs and respect the people that sing them no matter where or who they fought for
I also believe that many Germans, fought for their families and friends, rather than the Nazi party.
@@david.cze364 yeah definitely- not all of them were nazis, they were just fighting for their country
Yes I agree with you see they still had the effects of world war 1 on their minds still thinking of protecting the Fatherland and the Goals of the German Empire was supposed too mean which is why I love this song even though I know what there saying even though myself I am half German but was born and raised in the US while also only can speak a few words in German but I think I would have loved too see the German Empire today in this day and age I think the world would have been very different if the Nazi Party never raised too power because in the 1910's the German Empire was very large and a superpower at the time but they were actually the good guys in the end so it was pretty much the Allies fault that we actually created the 3rd Reich in a way
People joke in this comment section, but this song makes me sad; it makes me nostalgic for a greater time that I have never known. I would love nothing more than a return to tradition and morality, the opposite of which plagues the very soul of our European nations and people. I believe we can prevail, but seeing how far we have fallen still brings feelings of yearning and melancholy. But God is on our side, and knowing that, how can we fail?

This is a song about a flower
Literally
Literally my thoughts, these people really think the allies were the “good people”, while the axis were the “bad people”. Both sides committed their fair share of atrocities (though Germany did more). The allies = firebombing of Dresden. The axis = Holocaust.
@@main8824 The holocaust was the targeted extermination of over 11 million people. Dresden was a railroad and logistics center, and contained military factories.
@@main8824 “though Germany did more” and that’s exactly why we think they’re the bad guys
@@kaijuslayer3334 American soldiers pulled a Genghis Khan and raped thousands of German women, Russia committed massive war crimes when they started to push into Germany.
Look at the solder instead of the idea, I'm sure a German soldier didn't want to be there, but he fought for his country, same as Russia, Japan ect.

A little flower blooms on the heather
Auf der Heide blüht ein kleines Blümelein
And that means:
Und das heißt:
Erika.
Erika.
Hot from a hundred thousand little bees
Heiß von hunderttausend kleinen Bienelein
Is swarmed around:
Wird umschwärmt:
Erika
Erika
Because her heart is full of candy
Denn ihr Herz ist voller Süßigkeit,
A delicate fragrance emanates from the flower dress.
Zarter Duft entströmt dem Blütenkleid.
A little flower blooms on the heather
Auf der Heide blüht ein kleines Blümelein
And that means:
Und das heißt:
Erika.
Erika.
A blonde girl lives in the homeland
In der Heimat wohnt ein blondes Mägdelein
And that means:
Und das heißt:
Erika.
Erika.
This girl is my loyal darling
Dieses Mädel ist mein treues Schätzelein
And my luck
Und mein Glück,
Erika.
Erika.
When the heather blooms red-purple,
Wenn das Heidekraut rot-lila blüht,
I sing this song to greet her.
Singe ich zum Gruß ihr dieses Lied.
A little flower blooms on the heather
Auf der Heide blüht ein kleines Blümelein
And that means:
Und das heißt:
Erika.
Erika.
A little flower blooms in my little room
In mein'm Kämmerlein blüht auch ein Blümelein
And that means:
Und das heißt:
Erika.
Erika.
Already at dawn and at dusk
Schon beim Morgengrau'n sowie beim Dämmerschein
Look at me
Schaut's mich an,
Erika.
Erika.
And then it seems to me as if it speaks loudly:
Und dann ist es mir, als spräch' es laut:
"Do you think of your little bride too?"
"Denkst du auch an deine kleine Braut?"
A maid weeps for you at home
In der Heimat weint um dich ein Mägdelein
And that means:
Und das heißt:
Erika.
Erika.

Very true
And also relive taking that picture of your kids?
"The Small Hat cries out in pain as he strikes you."
It's already being repeated. The same people who destroyed germany and russia are destroying the rest of the world. How unfortunate that they pinned the Russians and the Germans against each other
Europa The Last Battle.
You can’t forget what you were never taught.
Time to wake up.
This song and words are the most beautiful to come out of Germany. I lived and worked there in the 1960`s and met a young colleague called ....Erika. She taught me this song. I then joined local
folk choirs, learning many many songs, and all of them from pre-nazi era. I met wonderful kind people and loved every moment of my time there. AND I still sing `Erika` with great love and affection. Germans are intensely musical and poetic people.
As someone who toured in Germany with many popular artists, German audiences are very musically inclined and appreciative. Great people, great country. Sadly, the orchestrated migrant invasion may be prove to be the end of them. They need an Austrian painter like never before.
It doesn't matter what horrible place your in right now, Germany is always here for you even when your "Friends" aren't.

plus the song is not related to nazis or racism(for the people who think that), if this was related to nazis or racism, then listening to songs like Beethoven would be the equivalen.
Not really the same, this song was published in 1938 in Germany while it was the Nazi regime and used by the Wehrmacht during WWII so is related with the Nazis

Maybe because it was created by a damn Nazi. Herms Niel, the creator, was a member of the Nazi party and conducted at Nazi rallies far before the war started. People need to stop saying it isn't associated with the Nazi, because it is and always has been.

My Argentinan grandfather with a German accent, said this was his favorite song, and I think he's an electrician, because on the helmet he showed me it had to lightning bolts on it, also I think he loves Asian symbols of good luck and peace, because he has a lot of them on his old clothes, same with these catholic looking crosses that he calls "the iron cross" anyway that's all I have to say. But actually, jokes aside, this a really beautiful and catchy song, it talks about the soldiers wives, and reminds them about what they are actually fighting for.
That's not actually an Asian symbol. It was worldwide, from the Proto-Indo-Europeans, formerly called Ary***, who settled every continent and built pyramids, from China to Tibet to South America. They have stories and statues of the fair skinned, fair haired, colored eyed people, even "Quetzalcoatl", who taught them megalithic construction.
As an Argentinian I'm not even offended at all but these jokes started to get annoying long time ago
