It seems weird that if you want the latest version of something, you have to use a distro that is ultimately based on Debian Stable.

Pkcon is a cross platform package maintenance program. It can be use with sudo and updates without need root permissions so it makes like easier for users and they changed some in neon and want you to use apt full- upgrade because apt update doesn't full upgrade packages that need to be removed. Pkcon update handles all that for you. Pkcon can be used and installed on any distro is the universal update feature for cockpit and other software

Very good review , Matt, very complete and informative. I like the desktop, it think I would use it if I wasn't using i3 . I too am a tiling wm user. I would like to try other ones , but I have memorized the keys for i3 and started becoming proficient at configurating it, so I can't find one better at both. I like the long term review format......much better info...keep it up Matt.

Nice video! My level of knowledge precludes using Neon as a daily driver but I have it on an old laptop for certain non-critical uses just because I've liked it from its earliest days and using the latest Plasma version is just too hard to resist. They apparently don't call it a distro because nothing is tested on it but the Plasma desktop with a handful of KDE applications. I lost it repeatedly years ago when an update would sometimes bork it but it seems impressively stable nowadays.

Thank you for the in depth look at KDE Neon. I really like Debian based systems and have recently started to jump ship from Gnome to KDE environments. I think I will be giving it a try after watching this video. I have tried KUBUNTU, but did not like it at all. I also downloaded and installed Debian 11 from scratch with the KDE desktop, and I liked it better than KUBUNTU as well. Again, thanks!

Thanks for the video! I've been a Mint (Cinnamon) user for a while. Recently I put Q4OS on an old laptop to mess around with. The KDE Plasma environment blew me away. For the past week I've been trying to decide between KDE Neon or Kubuntu. I'm leaning towards Neon but still up in the air.

KDE Neon Score: 1 out of 5 - How I as a VIsually Impaired evaluate a product:
    1. Does it enable a Dark Theme by default?
    2. Can it be switched to a Dark Theme?
    3. Are the Text/Icons/Pointers large and readable?
    4. Can the Text / Icons / Mouse Pointer/Cursors be changed to a very large size?
    5. Does it maintain the Dark theme and large text/icons/mouse pointer througout all applications?
For me, trying to read black text on a white background (in a dialog box) would be like you staring into the sun. NOt only is it painful, you see absolutely nothing inside it. I see the world like you would see the world thorugh a frosted car Window on a cold winter day. It's very bright and blurry. If someone held a STOP sign up to your window, you could read it, but as they moved further away, it would blur to a red smudge and then disappear into a world of blur.
    Final verdict: FAIL> UNUSABLE
I was able to change to a Dark Theme with black background. No support for large mouse pointers. Installation was very painful. Does not maintain the Dark Theme throughout all applications.

hey i know its basically "gentoo" but i noticed on a like a top 5 video of favorite distros you put Redcore linux in it im more interested in that and would like to suggest you using it as a "long term" or do a couple videos on it like getting started for someone who's never used gentoo before. im currently using manjaro, everything just works, i did try redcore it ran so good and i loved the out of the box minimalization. only issue i had was learning how to install stuff as "sudo" wasn't the thing i figured out how to install stuff "i think" but i had an issue with steam. it worked but then after installing things it didn't work. not sure if there package was older or if i did something wrong.
not sure if i know enough to learn gentoo. but that distro is really nice. and i'd love to learn more about it.

If you have a multi-monitor setup, and I can understand that sometimes windows open on the wrong monitor. There are also multiple issues. If you have a portrait monitor, some programs can really cause a serious problem with scaling.

I like the overall look of KDE, but with any distro I have the issue of blank screen after waking up from sleep. I would get that error pop up when looking at themes or icons and I tried to search or change something while it was still loading.

    • @DavidCastillaGil
      @DavidCastillaGil Рік тому

I was about to comment on the error browsing the themes from within the settings application. It happened several times to me as well and found others pointing at the issue on some forums. It looks like the app crashes while trying to fetch content from the site, but I used to manage around it by using the web version to check them out, it works much quicker. Then once I chose the one I wanted I directly searched for it in the local app to install it.
The biggest issue I've found myself during my last months of use is, whenever the kernel is updated it doesn't remove older versions. I investigated and read that it doesn't mark them as manual installs so they aren't purged when they get old. This caused my drive to fill two or three times until I noticed the culprit, notwI just have a cron job to ensure they are removed and I just keep the latest two or three just in case.

The error when trying to "get more" theming components in settings has been an on again off again bug for years across lots of distros with the Plasma desktop. I think it is a server timing thing with the KDE Store. Currently, it seems to be working fine. It has been working fine on my Fedora/ Plasma for the last 8 months with no issues.

I have been using Kubuntu for about 3 4 months and i am very satisfied. Before that i used Fedora, but i had many issues and then i figured out that most of those issues were because of Gnome.
