    I have had a Laptop with KDE neon for the last year. No major issues so far. Rock solid distro. I always want a reason to switch the distro on that laptop, but KDE neon doesn't give me a good one.

    kcon is the command line back-end to Packagekit used by Discover and Gnome Software. It is distro-agnostic, in that it is actually using the system's native packaging system to do the actual work. So Pkcon will work in Neon, Ubuntu, Manjaro, or anywhere where Discover or Gnome Software is used.
    The reason Neon pushes this is because many people were using apt in the Debian fashion as opposed to how it is used in Ubuntu-based distros, and not all updates were being installed. So apt upgrade was being used instead of apt full-upgrade.

    KDE crashed? What a surprise!
    I hope the migration to Qt 6 helps with execution stability. Even just better handling of crashes would be a plus.
    KATE is the intermediate text editor. It makes sense that the more basic KWrite is default. If you want the top-end KDE text editor, there is KDevelop.

      @Halal Productions ASMR how can u compare a distro with a desktop environment?

    • @defeatedsanity
      @defeatedsanity 2 роки тому +1

      @Halal Productions ASMR there are no neon nor plasma "versions"/"editions", whatever. kde neon is just the naming of a linux distro from the KDE guys, which uses KDE plasma and the latest versions of it, cuz KDE develops it, but there is no desktop environment / version / edition called KDE neon, there's just plasma=)

    • @defeatedsanity
      @defeatedsanity 2 роки тому

      @Halal Productions ASMR kde plasma itself cannot be burned or installed as a system, because it's just a package group, a desktop environment, which contains plasma-shell and the other plasma stuff, same as gnome or xfce or any other DE. same as firefox, for example (except firefox is a single package). it won't work by itself, because you also would need a kernel, a login manager, display server etc.. kde neon is, again, a distro (kernel, package manager, login manager, display server, window manager/desktop env. and other stuff together), which is a ubuntu lts with the fresh kde plasma desktop on top
      "when you want to download the kde plasma iso image and burn it on the usb, you have two versions the neon and the plasma one", please provide the link =)

    I just checked on my EndeavorOS install and pkcon (PackageKit Console Interface) is installed on my system and I just installed this a month ago. I did not install it so not sure where it came from. 🤔
    You have proven my point with KDE, to many settings to have to change to theme or change some simple thing... Lol
    Then it crashes ☠ awesome!
    Maybe your computer does not understand all the theming settings when the them is changing them... Just saying! 🤣
    Yep Hdd issues, I understand, I just had one start clicking as I was updating MX today... I'm out of drives and Amazon says 10 days to get them and there in stock. The joys of living in the sticks after C-19... Before C-19, I got stuff in 3 days now everything is 10 days or more. I have went back to Ebay for lots of stuff as it is faster.....
    Good luck on the KDE thing...

      I agree. It looks beautiful in screenshots and basic use is fine but as soon as I want to change something such as a shortcut on the taskbar area I right click, select customise and it’s just overload of options with the taskbar panel changing and options pop up everywhere. It’s just a bit too much too often.

    I just want to add that KaOS is another KDE centric "pure" ish distro that I've used in the past and it is very decent if you don't mind having less available software. Super stable and very functional just has an "aggressive" if you will curation of software that's available for it.
    As a side note, been an Arch user for years and have switched recently to Garuda and I don't think I'm going back. If you play video games on your PC, Garuda is basically the distro you will want to use. If you see people saying it is "bloated" don't really take that to heart since the "bloat" that they are talking about is software installed already for you to get you downloading and playing games right off the bat. No need to download a bunch of things like Proton/Wine GE, steam, DXVK, etc, etc. It runs just as fast if not faster than most distros out there with optimized packages and runs the ZEN Kernel by default.

  • @flightvision

    I've had a very similar experience with KDE neon having used it for around 2 years until last year:
    pkcon vs. apt is confusing. It seems to be a recommendation, not a hard requirement but what does that mean?
    It was not able to upgrade itself from 18 LTS to 20 LTS. And I've updated many Ubuntu systems.
    I am staying with KDE of course because I love it. That distro has always very fresh KDE packages and is said to be good for developing on KDE itself but it was not for me.
    I look forward to hear more from your journey with it.

    I agree that that background is too bright. Out of curiosity I decided to invert my screen colors while you had it up and it actually looks great inverted. You're also right about the settings for kwin, they need to be further categorized and instead of calling it kwin in the settings it should refer to it as Global or Window or KDE or anything better so that people will know that's where they want to go. I change or add shortcuts on a pretty regular basis because I'm never happy with the way I've chosen to do things, and even I am annoyed by it.

    I’ve been using Plasma for the majority of my time using Linux, and it has always been the case that any time I use anything other than the default themes, Plasma takes a shit on me. Also, any time I change themes, I usually tell it to apply the change to my appearance settings AND my desktop layout. I expect this to adjust placement of my panel and widgets, and even reset my application launcher from grid back to list. This is fine. Those things are easy to change quickly. However, what it ALSO does is reset all of my application that I’ve pinned to my panel and to my favorites.
    This is extremely annoying because I set them up a certain way, and it takes time. I shouldn’t have to reset everything every time I change themes from one boring stock theme to another boring stock theme. There’s another bug that really irritates me, but this comment is long enough as it is. My point is that Plasma has QoL bugs that have existed for years at least and still haven’t been fixed. So if you do manage to find out what the fuck is going on and how to fix it, please make a video about it, because it isn’t any fun hating my favorite DE, which is starting to become a reality for me.

      Unfortunately, as it stands right now, Plasma doesn't have a standardised "Favourites" nor "Pins" value. They're stored in each Plasmoid that uses those features' own configuration areas, meaning they're nuked by the resetting of layouts.
      I'm hoping that, since I dropped the idea in the Plasma 6 wishlist, the breaking changes necessary to make them standardised settings can happen in 6 at the very latest.

    KDE is beautiful but it needs a lot of polish in its current iteration, I like the concept behind Kinoite but it's based on a clumsy build of a single desktop. No thanks.
    KDE Neon is fine but I really can't stand snaps, and only tolerate flatpaks outside of an immutable distribution.

    It being based on Ubuntu was its downfall for me. I liked it, love the K desktop feel and love using it on Garuda, but it was a no no for me early on. Not that I have a problem with ubuntu, it just wasn't utilised well, like Mint, for example uses it. Should have been based directly off of deb.
