Foltest made one mistake, ge gave too much trust. If he didn't trust the "monk" he would have stayed alive. With Geralt at his side, Letho would have been dead before he could have touched Foltest.
He wasn't as paranoid as he should've been or maybe that's just me if I was a king I would certainly be looking over my shoulder even more than I already do
On one hand Foltest had his understanding about engineering and military, was willing to fight alongside with his soldiers and knights and recognized their sacrifices for the country. On the other hand he couldn’t control his lower part of the body, produced scandals and bastards with his vassals spouse, causing conflicts within the kingdom. He was described as a charismatic ruler with complicated characters in witcher 2. Hard to say whether he was a good king or not, but sure has left a vivid impression to me 12 years ago when i first played the game.
It's hard to say how good of a king in general Foltest was indeed, in books he is fairly energetic and ambitious and is capable of extending the power of his kingdom, and due to other factors not dependant on him, he actually gets a boost to his power, after death of the king Ekkehard of Sodden he gets the crown of that kingdom (or at least that part of it that didn't get counquered by Nilfgaard in first war :)), and king Venzlav of Brugge willingly becomes his vassal (to protect his country from the threat of Nifgaardian Empire), we learn already in the story The Witcher that even from young age he was quite a troublemaker prone to scandals :) and so hence his infamous love affair with his own sister Adda and the child they sired that later got cursed and turned into striga. He also was nominal sovereign of Mahakam, though dwarves had their own ruler in truth, still he would have benefitted economically from proximity of dwarven mines :), as he said in the book during the meeting of kings at Hagge in Blood of Elves he was for the coexistance and cooperation with other races, though he later agreed to get rid of the Scoia'tael in larger campaign, he definitely worked to protect the Temeria's economy (the 'customs war' with Redania) but so was king Vizimir protecting his country's interests as well :), he was fairly decent commander during battle of Brenna though he was mainly doing the grander strategy and it was communal effort of larger alliance of kingdoms: "'Your Majesty! Lord Constable!' 'Speak up, boy.' 'The Volunteer army and the Free Company are nearing Golden Pond... The dwarves and the condottieri stand firm, though with severe losses. It is said that Adam "Adieu" Pangratt is dead, Frontino is dead and Julia Abatemarco is dead... All the commanders. The Dorian banner, which were sent to help were cut down to the man...' 'Withdrawn, Lord Constable,' Foltest said quietly but clearly. 'If you ask me, it is time to fight a withdrawal. Let Bronibor's men stand against the Black ones. Now! Immediately! Otherwise they'll break through the army's front line, penetrate and end us all.' John Natalis didn't answer; he watched another messenger from afar who raced towards them on horseback, from which foam flew. 'Take a breath man. Take a breath and pass on the message.' 'They broke... They broke the front... Elves, the Vrihedd brigade... Lord de Ruyter conveys a message to your lordships...' 'What is it? Speak!' 'It is time to save your lives.' John Natalis look up to the heavens. 'Blenckert,' he said flatly. 'Let Blenckert arrive. Or let the night come.' In the rashness of his youth he had to oftne be tempered by his advisors for he had a temper :), he tried diplomacy when the military solutions were not enough, though his armistice with Nilfgaard when other kingdoms like Aedirn were conquered wasn't his best moment, he tried to secure peace with the treaty, which Nilfgaard soon enough broke attacking the temerian protectorates (but during this diplomatic escape so to protect his kingdom, he also took advantage and secured the piece of Aedirn with castle Hagge to protect his flank). He was in general all things considered as far as kings go pretty chill guy :). He is certainly intelligent and is fair, he does things to maintain the pretences or public opinion but is pretty just and honest, though when the situation arise he can use pretty ruthless underhanded means. Personally he was pretty accepting, he hoped for saving his daughter from the curse and despite all he wanted her to survive, etc.
Hard to decide. Don't read this comment if ye haven't played the Witcher Two. The internal disarray of Temeria destroyed it all.
