The entire episode I kept thinking...if a sticker could throw off a helicopter...what happens when a bird dookies on it? (Parked outside not while spinning) ... This myth was busted before it even began
Absolutely. Take a light aircraft out for a flight in the summer and see how many bugs are left behind on the windshield once you're finished. You'd better believe at least a postage stamp's worth of extra mass will be left behind on the rotor blades over the course of any given helicopter flight. I'm also pretty sure I once saw a picture of a Soviet Mi-8 with bullet holes in the rotor blades that had been covered up with duct tape. I appreciate that they give every myth a certain degree of prima facie respect and due diligence, but I'm surprised this one made the cut at all.
@@Omniprong Mi-8 is a combat helicopter gunship, even though its mostly for transport, that thing can take a lot and still fly. Not indicative of how a more civil helicopter will work, I assure you that a regular helicopter will most likely lose a blade if you shoot it.
@@CZProtton A military helicopter is definitely more robust than a civilian one, but the difference isn't so substantial that one could fly with bullet holes in the rotor blades while the other would be rendered unflyable by a postage stamp. My point was that helicopters just aren't that sensitive, and there was enough readily-available evidence out there even at the time the episode was filmed that I'm surprised they bothered testing it.

41:07 This exact thing happened to me and my lab partner in high school, when we were doing a practice run of this recipe for a class assignment where we had to demo some kind of interesting chemical reaction. I found the recipe online. The teacher didn't have a frying pan, so we used a beaker on a hotplate. While we were heating up the mixture, it combusted and started spewing fire. It was so bad that the beaker melted to the hotplate and she had to throw the whole thing out. We had to open all the windows in the adjoining hallway to let out the smoke. The teacher said it was the worst lab accident she'd seen in 11 years of teaching, and she cancelled the assignment for the whole class and said she was never giving it out again because she didn't want to tempt fate anymore. After all these years, I'm very relieved to learn that this hasn't only happened to us!
During Vienam war many huey helicopters lifted up and flown with heavy blade damage, since sometimes they would land cutting space through the brush, branches and vegetation. So I assume one stamp won't do a thing.
For the salpeter/sugar smoke bomb: never heard that somebody but it in a pan to "bake" it. When we were kids we just mixed the two ingredients and then ignited the mixture with a lighter.
I'm wondering if 8000 stamps have had the same effect on the model helicopter if they were all stuck flat onto the blade instead of screwing a big block on it which has much more air resistance...
