They indeed use a real climbing rope and real harness. If you look closely on 23:19 you can see a nylon rope on Jamie's harness. It's just covered in duct tape. And the harness is a sport climbing harness covered as well. I'm glad they used that kind of protection but they could just tell the viewers that they have a back up just in case.
I'm pretty sure the belay rope was real but they did actually use the duct tape rope. just if something went horribly wrong they did have the nylon. But yeah the whole episode played out more like a parody of a survival show than a mythbusters episode
I have immense respect for Adam blocking the view of his mouth with his hand and then turning to Jamie and being raw with what he was feeling and experiencing after climbing down that mountain.
Jamie: I know we are safe, we are in television after all but let's build something that would actualy have a chance of going down the hill on water. Adam: Well... I'm the "in danger" one in this episode so...
43:00 That's a detail, hand on the head like that means "I need help". Take a look how he directs his eyes to the camera while doing that. Quite similar to Alcatraz scape when they decided the signs for help.
This seems like an amazing adventure, I'd love to know why there aren't dozens more people floating in the river next to them? Something like this would be pretty popular in Czechia, and it's probably at worst intermediate difficulty.
@@SomaFlly Oh the whole thing and doing it with duct tape seems really fun. But I get that it might not be very realistic. The river on it's own is amazing enough though
I would not be surprised if they made those ropes at the shop where they could check the strength and or the one connected to the harness is a proper rope. Other options would have being professionals going down with the gear that they have but an emergency breakaway rope (one that has a bit extra slack so it does not take weight until the person starts falling) and a non-zero chance that they switched at least the safety rope out to reduce possible wear issues
@@gerardmcquade9102 Apparently it was Duct Tape but yeah they didn't even get onto location without being absolutely sure that the rope would get them down. You can also see the actual rope used by the rest of the crew I would guess over to the right on the wide shots
There's a shit load of lies in this episode. They didnt really sleep out there, they were using real climbing gear wrapped in tape, real life jackets wrapped in tape etc. Also yeah they used about 10 times the amount of bubble wrap than they claimed.
@@Rando_Shyte Unless you are blind you can see all the safety gear if anyone does this for real it should work but not something I would recommend. Besides unless you end up next a duct tape factory you will never have enough to make all the rope and things they made for this ep.
I've done alot of repelling. They could have made a duck tape mat to put on the rock wall so the duck tap rope can slide easy over it and doesn't chafe away on the Rocks.
21:15 -- I know the show wouldn't aired if something tragic had happened but scaling a 150ft drop with duct tape rope is just something I couldn't do... I don't care if tests showed if a single strand could support ~70lbs or not.
im guesing like most of it, the show isent the type where the host do noting, having said that they do have build team that help them and if they don't know how to do it themself the hire in people. and often in those cases they tell the audience who is making it or shows sped up fotege of when its built
@@streamer9923probably they didn't twist ALL these ropes just by themselves when whole crew was drinking coffee but most of things would he done by these two.
I like how they left the car with a load light enough to drag on a travois... ...and then suddenly they had enough bubble wrap to build two yuuuuge fackin boats! 😂
Where were their safety gears? This episode is so dangerous; they could have drowned or hit their heads on the rock, or the cable might break when they hang on it.
This episode was sketchy. I imagine the tape rope was fine since you can test that for weight well in advance but going into serious rapids with no helmet or protective gear is a nono. Adam could have easily knocked himself out there on a bad bump.
This has to be the worst episode of Mythbusters I've seen. Far more repetitive than it needed to be, producers forcing Adam and Jaimie to fake shit, stupid story line.
Can’t wait for all the duct tape episodes to be on UA-cam and then being combined into a Super Duct Tape Marathon.
That would be cool
Shut yer mouth with ductape, if you really can't wait.

I didn't see that but figured it was the case. They also didn't sleep outside. One of the most disingenuous episodes for sure.
As I was watching, I also was wondering... nah no way they didn't have certified safety gear with them lol
it's 100% for sure real climbing stuff. You can see Adam arm position while descending... with no force at all
I think this was meant more as an exercise of what could be. In a life of death situation you could make a duct tape rope and climb it.
I'm pretty sure the belay rope was real but they did actually use the duct tape rope. just if something went horribly wrong they did have the nylon. But yeah the whole episode played out more like a parody of a survival show than a mythbusters episode

“Calm people live” thats a quote to remember
I honestly love revisiting this show. 😊 Its a really fun watch
33:58 props to the cameraman for the action shots
I have watch duct tape episodes countless of times. And not get bored.
Among the best. I guess selling duct tape was big business after these episodes.
Jamie: I know we are safe, we are in television after all but let's build something that would actualy have a chance of going down the hill on water.
Adam: Well... I'm the "in danger" one in this episode so...
Funny how they have infinitely more bubble wrap and duct tape the further into the episode we go. Much more than what they started with. 😁
I see the Mythbusters are taking a page from the Bear Grills school of survival: pretend to sleep in the wilderness, but stay at the Hilton instead.
At least with the editing style, it was clear they weren't trying to fool anyone lol.
Thanks for noticing Captain Obvious...

Seaman Savage... Im dead😂😂😂
This is legendary!

@@jakubpluhar4914 it does sound fun for sure 😂
I suggest you check the credits. There’s a bunch of external companies mentioned in the “special thanks to” part😉
Is it true they don’t just tell the myth?
For sure, They put them to the test!
Jamie wants big boom 💥
So come again... who are the Mythbusters?
I hear, they also put them up for sale...
They have been known to put one or two to the test.
Anyone else carry a roll of duct tape in their car when going on a long journey after seeing all the duct tape episodes?
How about a suitcase full? 🤣🤣🤣
I carry a few due to my field of work not because of Mythbusters but hey it's nice to know in case of emergency I can turn it into a passable rope
I am speechless at the extreme risks being taken in this episode. Savage and The Hyneman are legends sheeeshhhhhh....😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
Please repeat the series!
Don't think the second thought about going over the edge in abseiling really goes away, just gets more manageable!
Really surprised that Jamie didn't pop off his couch in the rapids.
Does anybody know the music that kicks in at 16:50 ?
I can’t believe they really climbed down only with duct tape without real harness and real safety rope.
Savage and Hyneman, their balls are indeed made of brass.

I only just noticed that, too. I can't believe their insurance company actually signed off on it.
15:12 I think Adam ate the wrong cactus
Kinda suprises me that they did the rapids without proper helmets and vests. Alot of people have died in those circumstances.
They didn't have helmets but I'm pretty sure they had vests. The duck tape was covering them.
26:48 😂
This excursion should be marketed as rock climbing and boating. So cool. Unfortunately the cacti will be eaten at some point *g*
It's not Survivorman when it comes to ingenuity, but it makes good entertainment.
That's a LOT of bubble wrap. Did they trek in that much? Seems much more than the thing they through over the cliff.

I do think these specials are kinda silly and staged but there’s some nuggets of wisdom and hilarity involved.
Several octaves higher than usual. Pun intended. 😄

Real harnesses covered in duct tape.

such a sweet little red car :)

If only they had created a 'Mythbusters' museum or sold what they created to raise money for charity.
that lookes actually dangerous in the rapids
we're just going to pretend like the were carrying all that material with them the entire time.
LETS GOO one of my fav episodes
Dissapointed they used a rope for the harness. If you cheat make it obvious enough so that other people don´t get the wrong idea
They proved that a duct tape rope can hold your weight and they did it while being safe because its a controlled experiment. Big whoop, keep crying.

Duct tape specials. When on a roll, stick to it.
Bubble pack? Bubble wrap😅
In an episode where they drop buster in a 'human hamster ball' from a helicopter, they call it "inflatable packaging" ??? 😅

wonder if they went long on duct tape stocks before they aired this lol
They seemed to have packed an infinite supply of bubble wrap. Unless it's somehow getting replenished.
Everyone knows bubble wrap respawns 😅
They would have needed some 850 duct tapes for all their cheap advertisement.
Adam looks Like the Colonel of KFC
How did camera crew got down?

Idiotic intros like that is the reason why the show died the way it did.
