  • Tonight, Tim offers his first live review of a luxury watch: the 2021 Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch. While the name "Tim Mosso" is synonymous with luxury watch reviews, most of those videos live on The 1916 Company Watch Reviews. Tonight, Tim discusses the newest Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch with a frank take on the new Omega Speedy's successes and shortfalls.
In addition, tonight's show focuses on the value to be had in modern Breguet watches; they're simply the most underrated modern luxury timepieces available today. All of that and watch collector wrist shots can be found on this episode of "Watches Tonight" with Tim Mosso.
The 2021 Omega Speedmaster Professional "Moonwatch" is a big deal. Unlike the 2021 novelties from Rolex and Patek Philippe, even the most coveted Omega novelties tend to be accessibly priced AND available at dealers within a reasonable timeframe. Omega's latest take on its NASA-issued space chronograph marks one giant leap for watch that built its fame on the wrists of astronauts. At 42mm, and stainless steel, the external appearance of the Moonwatch hasn't changed dramatically, but all is new within its ferrous carapace.
Let's start with the exterior; Omega has calculated the dial, bezel, and bracelet of the 2021 Speedmaster Professional to recall the Apollo-era 105.012 Speedmaster that truly did land on the Moon with Neal, Buzz, and third man Michael Collins. A subtle re-profiling of the anodized aluminum tachymeter adds a "dot over 90" and "diagonal dot" at numeral 75. Omega retains the "hesalite" (i.e., plastic) crystal on standard Moonwatches, and the dial beneath features subtly redesigned chronograph registers and hour indices. For sapphire crystal models with display casebacks, Omega's new Moonwatch dial gains an applied metal Omega logo.
Omega's new Moonwatch caliber 3861 is the big news for 2021. First previewed in 2019 on the Apollo XI 50th anniversary limited edition, the 3861 makes huge strides in durability and precision. This is the first Omega Speedmaster Professional to include both a co-axial escapement and a METAS Master Chronometer certification. A free-sprung balance, an antimagnetic silicon hairspring, and hacking seconds round out the changes. For the first time, the display caseback Speedmaster Professional uses the same movement as the closed caseback NASA version, so all examples of the caliber 3861 are cleanly finished.
Moonwatches aside, Tim looks to Swatch Group flagship brand Breguet for overlooked value in an era of relentless watch hype. While watches from Rolex, Patek Philippe, and FP Journe dominate social media and collector conversations, the Breguet brand offers superior products with almost no wait lists at dealers, preowned surcharges, or breathless over exposure on Instagram.
Tim take an extended look at the late model sports watches and dress watches available from Breguet. The famous Breguet Type XX (and XXI, and XXII) pilot's watch, the Marine water resistant sports watch, and the elegant "La Tradition" in all of its forms take pride of place on tonight's show.
Fans of dress watches will be stunned by how much Breguet a watch collector can purchase with a fraction of FP Journe Chronometre Bleu money. From grand feu bleu enamel dials to spectacular open movements, Breguet offers a match for nearly any watch collector taste or wrist size. And for fans of complicated watchmaking, Tim highlights the spectacular value of the Breguet Tradition 7047 tourbillon fusee and the enamel dial Breguet Classique 3420 jump hour.
Watches mentioned include the Omega 310.30.42.50.01.002, the 310.30.42.50.01.001, the 310.32.42.50.01.001, the 310.32.42.50.01.002, and the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Silver Snoopy 310.32.42.50.02.001

Tim, W-O-W! I discovered Breguet over 2 years ago, but never heard anyone talk about it. My sense it had the hand craftsmanship of a DuFour at a fraction of the price. Your ardent and passionate review of Le Maison has put the brand on my purchase list. Plus it can be bought/worn right away plus at a discount. Thanks for your hard work and dedication.

Great to see Breguet get some love. One small point: the Marine 5817 measures 40mm even though Breguet lists it as 39mm. You measured it at 40mm in one of your videos, and I did as well.

Time out. Tim out. Love it. That was down to the wire with Breguet finishing 1,2 and 3 on the podium.
I must say, in a slightly more daring and contemporary traditional manner Ulysse Nardin are going from strength to strength with each passing decade and not unlike Breguet are exceptional value horological pieces throughout, pre-owned in the mid to upper tier offerings.

  • @bikemike1118
    @bikemike1118 2 роки тому +1

I definitely agree on the value of Breguet (especially compared to the overhyped models everybody‘s yearning for).
I personally think that apart from lazy marketing it might also be their somehow „weird“ combination of their sportier models (cases, bracelets & straps) with this too much 18th century (or 17th century??) style dials and hands. The pilots models look quite okay but suffer a bit from the same problem (not the hands so much but the calligraphy of their numbers and writing on the dial)…. just my personal explanation for them not standing in the customers focus…. And pure dresswatches are not so sought after in times when even CEO‘s of major companies don’t wear ties any more 🤷🏻…times have changed (and might change back). But I could get weak on the gorgeous looking model with the dark blue dial. This thing is killer!!

I don't have an issue with Omega re-cooping their investment costs with their new caliber. Their profit margin on the OLD watch must have been very high since it had not changed much through the years. So why shouldn't their profit margin be the same or higher on a technically superior watch?

What about the breguet traditional 7097BB automatic? This watch is the first watch to impress me in a long time, fit, finish, looks, price. I don’t think from my watch knowledge that there is any piece out there that beats it, it’s on my mind for my next piece for casual dress or jump on the sport side with the marine first. I believe Breguet will have a much stronger demand in the future years to come once all this hype dies out, Jeff.

I have that watch, the WG version. I can tell you it is chock full of details. Initially, your focus is on the jumping seconds hand. As your length of ownership grows, you also start to appreciate the myriad of exquisite details everywhere. In terms of wearability, it is surprisingly versatile: it is thoroughly a Breguet so it dresses up very well, but is also expressive and avant garde enough that it can be dressed down easily.

I’ve thought for 25 years that Breguet was underrated. Now if they’d bring back the 5817 with the blue guilloché dial then that would be awesome! Why not do the whole dial in blue? How about a version with the standard blue guilloché but a light powder blue hours chapter ring? Why not do the same and combine forest green and mint green? How about an equivalent in deep and light red? I’d take mine with an all burgundy guillochè dial and with blued steel hands, indices, and printing. So many other ideas, so little time!

Breguet needs to spend a LOT of time on design and aesthetics rather than cobbling together designs that look to be CAD'ed up by some young engineering grad. They looked finished and opulent for finishing's sake, does not work with the design or a flow or a well thought out whole. Some of them are ugly, almost Ulyse Nardin'esque. Come to think of it, its almost headed that way.
Doesnt have the discipline of Patek, or the looks of a Longe or Vacheron. Difficult to take in. Its sort of sleeping in the past too much, in a very nostalgic French sort of way. Ugh!
In other words its not DESIRABLE, no one wants one. Which is a shame.
