- Tonight, Tim discusses the 2021 Patek Philippe Calatrava models and the controversial Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Black Panther Flying Tourbillon. After a week of new Rolex and Patek Philippe Nautilus fixation, Tim is ready to talk about Patek Philippe dress watches and complications. Further, the polarizing fruits of Audemars Piguet's collaboration with Marvel Entertainment will be treated to an in-depth review. As Watches and Wonders 2021 draws to a close, Tim shares his thoughts and viewer wrist shots with our global audience.
No 2021 will prove to be more controversial than the AP Royal Oak Concept Black Panther Flying Tourbillon. This 42mm titanium tourbillon watch is a limited edition of 250 pieces, and its price is bold: $162,000. The flashpoint is Audemars Piguet's strident use of a hand-crafted miniature of T'Challa, the fictional King of Wakanda and current bearer of the Black Panther's mantle. Although hand-engraved from white gold and hand-painted, the presence of a literal comic book character on the dial of a luxury watch has driven objections and second guessing.
Recent "Marvel" themed watches from novelty manufacturers and Hong Kong-based Memorigin have, to an extent, poisoned the well of public perception. Watch buyers are inclined to view "superhero" watches as toys for kids or low priced baubles falling short of high luxury.
While Audemars Piguet artisans reportedly spend over 30 hours finishing the Black Panther figurine by hand, the very sight of a fictional character on a watch dial will lead many watch collectors to reject this experimental model. But AP knew as much before making this call, and CEO François-Henry Bennahmias likely is willing to bet that he can find at least 250 wealthy watch collectors who love this design enough to write a check.
Blank Panther character colors including jet black and purple pervade this Royal Oak, and that's likely to be one of the few non-controversial elements of this brash watch design.
Technically speaking, the Audemars Piguet Black Panther is standard high-end AP. A manual wind flying tourbillon caliber 2965 supplies three days of power reserve
The 2021 Patek Philippe watches are here, and most of them are not Nautilus models. Despite social media obsession with the Patek 5711, the brand from Geneva wisely has split its dress watch launch date from its sports watch rollout. The new Patek Philippe Calatrava line adds the 39mm Calatrava 5116G-001 and 5116R-001; each is a "hobnail" bezel Calatrava with a new manual-wind movement, the caliber 30-255. The 5116G includes a distinctive grey satin dial, and the 5116R includes satin silver metallic.
Step up to complications, and the new Patek Philippe 4947/1A-001 offers a compelling 38mm stainless steel package with a matching steel bracelet. This automatic winding annual calendar includes white gold Arabic numerals on a blue "shantung" texture similar to a linen dial.
Finally, the most complicated Patek Philippe watch of 2021 to date is the spectacular 5296P-001. This is a 41.3mm platinum perpetual calendar with an industry-first in line perpetual calendar aperture-style display. A vertically brushed satin blue dial is framed by a case whose lines draw directly upon the 5235G annual calendar and 3448 perpetual calendar before it. The caliber 31-260 PS QL is based on the movement originally created for the 5235G, and it offers handsome expanses of hand-finished bridges with a micro rotor winding system.

Why can’t AP make serious watches like Patek?
I think Lange as a brand is standing below Patek , but for quality craftsmanship Lange is slightly above Patek.
It’s like Grand Seiko to Rolex, Grand Seiko has better finishing and time accuracy, but brand wise Rolex is way above Grand Seiko. It’s also like Lexus to Mercedes.
A legitimate criticism for the Black Panther watch is bad aesthetics. It's closer to a Power Rangers Dino Fury Wrist Communicator for an 11 year-old girl than a watch for an adult.

Tim you're the GOAT, but I think you're wrong about the AP black panther. Nobody is arguing it's more or less ridiculous to spend 200k on a watch (btw you'll find plenty of people saying it's ridiculous spending 10k on a watch, so the argument is relative). The argument is, it's simply childish to put a superhero on an AP. The brand represents class and achievement, while marvel movies represent cheap, juvenile pleasures. The two worlds are incompatible, and they shouldn't mix.
I think it's a bad look for AP. It's akin to Omega and their endless snoopy and tintin special editions: sure the watches look ok, and people will buy them, but they pay a price in the long term: people take the brand less seriously.

Tim I was hoping you would talk about the JLC Hybris Mechanica Calibre 185 Quadriptyque? I don't know if it was on watches and wonders though, or if it was mentioned in a previous show. It's a really mind blowing watch with brand new moon/earth movements I don't believe has ever been on another watch ever. Hope to hear you talk about it in the future!

I love the design but I'm personally disappointed by the lazy semi-jumping hour (more like a cheap date change) and recycling of the duoface movement rather than a truly dedicated built-for-purpose movement from a manufacture like JLC at the 40k price point compared to a 25k gold tribute calendar! Would love to hear your views on this Tim.

I definitely agree that at the $130K for the Patek, I'd be looking for a Lange Perpetual as well... Loving my new Lange Datograph Up/Down... You need to hold these watches! I own 3 Pateks, 4 APs, many Rolexes and high end independents, etc., and I must say, winding and operating my new Datograph is orgasmic and second to none!!! I want to make sure I DO NOT understate the quality and the feel!!! Just wow!!!

If you want a Marvel timepiece for 1/20th the cost go with an Invicta Black Panther watch.
If PP is ment to be the king of complications then JLC should be named the emperor of complications.
The AP Black Panther watch is a bit too cartoony. It should have been designed as a watch the character would wear. AP went the easy route on this one.

Very disappointed that you'd start on the AP by inferring people have a problem with the race of the character. It's a holy trinity brand making a comic book branded toy that looks more like it came from the vault of Invicta.
I've seen this kind of racism extensively on watch forums both after the movie came out and after the watch was announced. And I don't consider it a legit criticism of this watch. There are other legitimate objections, but some can and have reacted to the fact that this is a black super hero.

AP treat me like garbage over the weekend when I was trying to view the BBC watch. I am a customer of theirs and I was surprised and the difficult time it took me to see the panther. They have lost a customer and I’m going to VC from here.
I think the AP looks like Black Panther is riding into battle atop a front-loading washing machine. Convince me I'm wrong.
That platinum Vacheron chronograph at the end there gives the Datograph a run for its money. That's a hell of a watch.

Hi Tim, I like the style of both the ALS Saxonia Thin 37mm and the new PP Calatrava (both in white gold). I’m considering the purchase of either one of those two. I think the ALS has the edge based on its simpler, more timeless look, and the fact that at almost half the price of the PP, it’s offering the best value here by far. Does that make sense or am I missing something?

I would make the decision solely on aesthetics. There's no quality gap between those two, so you're going to have make the call based on your personal style preference.

This reminded me of the great episodes where Tim simply spoke about great watches. The Chopard, Vacheron split, AP Panther. This selection has mre of what made me start wearing mechanical watches than any Rolex commercial. Palm fronds.

When someone puts a picture of that perpetual calendar on Reddit 60 years from now and tells people it was their dad's watch, everyone is going to tell them it's fake, because Patek would never have made a date screen like that.
White gold SHOULD cost more than yellow gold (18kt) and rose gold (18kt)
White gold is 75% gold 25% palladium. Palladium is MORE expensive than gold.
yellow gold is 75% gold 25% mixture of copper and silver
rose gold is 75% gold 20+% of copper and small amount of other metals.
price of palladium $2660/ oz
price of cooper $8.9/ kg.
So white gold >> pure gold >> 18kt gold in terms of material cost.
Memorigin wants their design aesthetic back, and it's not good.

The themed watches should be left to Invicta. It sullies the AP brand. Watch houses' designs should stand alone gimmick free. Just an opinion.

Who actually likes the way tourbillon’s look on the dial of a watch? They seem to be the go to complication to justify a high price tag but then ruin the dial by cutting a hole in it to display the redundant piece of engineering.

The problem isn't that it's a comic collab, the problem is that the watch itself looks childish and distasteful: black panther dominating the dial with the lamest pose imaginable, with a tourbillon stuck under his crotch and hour/minute hands that look like a pair of 15-inch dong.
The Seiko street fighter and Gundam series watches are collabs done correctly.
Next AP will be a minute repeater that plays "Fuck da police"

The Sky Dweller should have been on the Jubilee from the start. As far the 42mm SD being a Datejust on steroids, yes compared to the 36mm, not so much for the 41mm DJ. "Super Datejust, Giant Datejust, Datejust 3"... All good names, but I still like the name Sky Dweller. As an international airline pilot who wore a GMT Master for 38 years, this is a worthy successor to that watch and was my retirement watch. Plus, I always wanted a Datejust and this watch gave me Datejust aesthetics, with a GMT (my favorite complication) and the calendar complication that I was looking for in my next watch. Additionally, from what I'm hearing Rolex will sell me the new Jubilee bracelet for my SD. It's just a matter of cost for my two tone watch version.

Hi Tim. Always tune in for your weekly content. The Black Panther AP watch is cool in person but it isn’t not going to resonate with every audience. I was lucky enough to try it on in person. It is light in weight and the craftsmanship of the figurine is pretty neat. As goes with the code 11.59 I think folks need to try one in person to get a real feel for the timepiece. I believe they have a good amount of the Black Panther pieces sold already. Keep up the good work.
I appreciate the reply Tim. You are absolutely right that code 1159 generation one dials were underwhelming. They stepped it up in 2020. The 4401 movement is the star of the chronograph model. I enjoy your take on all brands and products across the spectrum. Look forward to the next video.

Design wise is nothing special, but the idea ... online auction drama is amazing, it’s a revolutionary, the same revolutionary scale when AP release steel watches at double the price of average Swiss gold watches.

FWIW here’s my take on the AP. I think they went in the wrong creative direction and went downmarket rather than upscale and something that could been really special. Imagine using a unique case material, like tantalum, or a super rare metal like palladium used for the dial that could be a Wakanda connection ie. vibranium and then use the purple/black color way to tie things together. But instead the watch is now all about a huge cartoon character hanging off the face and love it or hate it just seems to cheapen the watch and the brand IMO.
The best part of this watch story and Marvel collaboration is that the first Black Panther watch sold at auction for $5.2MM that went to a charity that supports education in low-income communities. Good watch, bad watch, ugly watch, whatevs, I’m just glad someones money went to a good cause.

To be honest I don’t know if I love the marvel AP but i really like it too!! I’d pay this price for a tourbillion any day over paying twice that money for an RM! It’s a pretty cool and fun watch and very serious with the tourbillion at the same time! I think it’s cool and rock this with a T shirt any day
It would have been cooler for AP to make a watch that's featured in the Marvel movies (like Hamilton does) than to plaster a movie on a dial. Alternatively, keep the character references to a snoopy on omega level.

The in line date window looks a bit strange because it's not framed. If they made the disk the same color as the dial with the numerals opposing color it would have been more congruent. Or they should have framed it.
I think the Sky dweller would look amazing on a president bracelet whos with me.
I just took a good look at that new AP, did anyone comment on the center where the hands meet with the mechanics. Really not interested in having to look at that :-(

Lange would not do such vulgar exposure; being under Richemont Lange need to give logical answers to their expenses, AP is just throwing away millions of dollars for people that willing to have fun seriously.
AP 💩the bed with the Black Panther watch. Having a comedian help with online auction added insult to injury. I think AP is actively trying to kill their brand. This watch cheapens the brand. Sorry for being mean and crass but a Holy Trinity watch needs to do better. This Marvel collaboration would be expected by Swatch, Invicta, or Hublot, not AP.
