I own a junglas. I spent weeks researching the if you had only one knife(survival knife). That was the choice I went with. I live in Louisiana with alot of dense undergrowth. A knife that serves as a machete, chopper, etc. was a no brainer. Easy to control and resharpen vs something like a kukri. Very happy with my decision.
Xtremely helpful. You nailed it for me. I want a beefy knife not a short machete. Side by side, I prefer the wider 2 inch blade on the Junglas2 and its proportions. I am a J2 man. Thx.
'Funny' yet valuable post Jacob. Big J2 fan myself.... RIGHT ESEE is no gimmicks. If I chop, I use a hatchet or an axe from Counsel Tool. YES you hit the nail on the head, ESEE is heirloom-quality working tools... . Your grandkids can use the J1/J2 when you are palms-down, face-up.
I also prefer a saber grind. I sometimes uses blades with a convex grind but I feel them dull and hard to use. I know that they spit woods well but they are not for multi-purposes.
Thanks Jacob! I am thinking about the Junglas 1. The only thing that holds me back is the almost full flat grind! I much prefer the saber grind personally. Thank you again for the unique, honest and very informative videos.
Thanks for your ESEE Junglas and Junglas II reviews. I'm trying to decide between the 2 and have a couple of ?'s. Are the tips and 'belly' curvature of both versions identical? It's hard to tell, but it appears that the Junglas has a bit more of a 'pointier' tip, while the Junglas II's tip is bit more 'blunter'. I do not require the Junglas's advantage in chopping, but do prefer a 'sharper' tip with a 'shallower' belly for cleaning game/fish and most other tasks (a 'fuller' belly blade is better for fleshing the skin of large game, though).
For a year now i can't make my mind up between te Kabar BK 9 and this Junglas 1. My next motortrip will be a few weeks to Norway and Sweden. Mainly riding in the dirt and the woods. Hanging my hammock and enjoying the peace and loneliness. I think tomorrow morning i will finally order de Junglas. And hoping that i will be using it for many years to come. I prefer the sheet. A knife like this you only buy once not ? Thx for your review. Have you any idea why Esee did shorten the blade ? And will the Junglas 1 only be on the shelf until the stock runs out or will it still be made alongside the Junglas 2 ?
I just ordered the Junglas 1 and it’s supposed to be here tomorrow,I’m excited..I went with the Junglas 1 because I knew those 2 extra inches mattered.I was looking for a big heavy chopper,I bought it because it is like a heavy short machete..When I was a kid I had a short heavy carbon steel machete and I used to hack down all kinds of trees with that thing.I have no idea whatever happened to that thing but it was built like a tank..I bought a Estwing Black Eagle a while back and as much as I love it,my friends Ontario RTAK 2 out preformed it by a good bit..I loved his RTAK 2 but didn’t like the nylon sheath at all so instead of buying the RTAK 2 and a new sheath,I figured I would go with the ESEE Junglas that comes with a nice sheath, has the better fit and finish, has a better heat treatment, better quality control and the great lifetime warranty too..to me it was worth the extra money I spent..with that being said,if you’re looking for a great knife that is a lot like the ESEE Junglas but not looking to spend that ESEE Junglas money, the OKC RTAK 2 is an excellent choice that you could never go wrong with
What do you like more the Esee Junglas or the Coldsteel Trailmaster...because I am going to get one or the other...and please if you answer this Question please do it Quickly because I am ready to buy as soon as I can make up my mind...and your help is needed
I recently got the Junglas ll. Now I see what you meant about 2'' difference. 2 inches can also make a big difference in whether you have a cat or a girlfriend. Notice the picture on the left.
Are the two models heat-treated any differently? I seem to remember hearing that the original Junglas is tempered a little softer than ESEE usually runs their knives so it can better take the stress of impact, but if the Junglas II is meant as a knife rather than a mini-machete, you'd think it would come a little more hardened.
Hhhmmmm i have never felt like the junglas was overly soft, so its hard for me to say- in my experience both hold an edge quite well- but both are differentially hardened.
I like the Junglas and the Junglas 2, I prefer the Junglas 2 for my pack out for a couple days, I use the Junglas for a day hike as it moderately thick and doesn’t chop that well.
When using the junglas in this video or any other situation while you are in the wild, is there anytime, in a specific situation when you said oh man I rather have a junglas II? I often said, I rather have a bigger knife but never said the opposite. I have a falkkniven S1, it is ok for most of the task but I need to have an axe with it. And most of the time I said I need a bigger knife and I’m struggling between the junglas and junglas 2.
The only time i would wish i had a J2 instead of the J1 is when im carrying and packing. Both in my opinion are masterpieces- but i think in hand the J1 is the more practical tool
its not my jungle ass lol good review. I just got back from camping and having to deal with lots of firewood prep. told my wife should have bought the jungle ass she was like huh wtf?
I've used my Junglas 2 for trail clearing/maintenance over the last couple years since I've owned it and can definitely attest to the extra couple inches being key... I know from experience that a longer blade would have made the work easier. That having been said, you're right about their roles being completely different though. Regardless, used properly they can't be beat.
I TOTALLY agree! I am afraid this video might have come off as being against the junglas 2... it isnt. I really love the J2. But man, the J1 is just so good! I want both. Lol
Hey bud, 2 things. #1- you are AWESOME for being so patient. I have meant to do a bug out bag video for quite some time, and it keeps getting pushed back. #2- maybe this video will help with the wait! ua-cam.com/video/k-nyLJUk2kI/v-deo.html
I don't. Way back in the day I had spoken with Esee about doing a video like that but I never purchased an E6 and it never happened. With that being said there is absolutely no comparison in chopping ability, the E6 is a medium knife while the J2 is a small chopper.
@evandence the 6 is great! Also consider the cm6. I love the J2 of course. And they might have more coming this year as well. Are you looking for a main belt knife or a chopper? Oh, I'll have some new stuff this year too!
@@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors main knife for sure, not too much chopping for here in Texas we don’t have big ass tree just mesquite and brush. But also wanted a Bowie like edc knife for when I do carry it. I know one think is I want a esee haha. Even thinking of finding the 6 with the clip point

It’s an interesting comparison. Excellent point you made about the diameter of the wood, a lot of guys wouldn’t have thought of that. After watching this, and a couple other videos, here’s what I’d say about the Jungle-Ass 2: - Still enough chopping power for shelter-sized woods - Long enough to split 4” - 5” logs - Less fatiguing than the larger Jungle-Ass when doing actual knife work. Given all that, I might actually have more use for the Jungle-Ass 2. I already have several axes and larger machetes if I’m definitely gonna be doing chopping/brush work, but none of my belt knives can chop as well as the Jungle-Ass 2. It’d make a good large camp knife.
I was wondering if I was watching ThePreppersBunkersOutdoors at the start of the video. You high on something Jacob? 🤣🤣 Haven’t seen you so funny in a while buddy. Nice comparison between the two. I always wonder if I will still need the J2 since I have the J1. Considering that I usually carry a small knife for finer work I think I will stick to the J1.
